IMPROVEMENT IN PENCIL-HOLDERS FOR SLATE-FRAMES'.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,491, dated November 3, 1874; application filed August 1 4, 1874.

I hereby declare the following/to be a full de scription of the same, reference being had to theaccompanyin g drawings making a part of this specification.

My invention consists of a device for safely and conveniently holding and carrying a slatepencil inside the frame of a slate, the operation of putting in and taking out the pencil` being simple and easily Within the ability of a small child.

I construct my invention as follows: I form a hole or recess A, Fig. 3, beginning at one corner, (preferably into one of the side or longerpieces of the frame endwise of the Wood, in the center of the piece,) of suitable length and size (say, six inches deep, or thereabout,) to receive the pencil. Then I form another hole or recess, B, Fig. 3, of suitable size and length (say, three inches deep, or thereabout,) in the center of the top or shorterl piece of the frame, endwise of the wood, be,- ginning at the same corner, this hole B being at a right angle with hole A. Into hole B I first place a coil or spiral spring, E, Fig. 2, made of brass or other suitable material, of convenient length. Next, I form an oblong slot, O, Figs. 1 and 3, in the top piece of frame, through into hole B, of suitable size and length, about one inch (more or less) from the corner, for the purpose of inserting a peg or pin, F, Fig. 2, made of wood, or other suitable material, into a rod or shaft, D, Fig. 2, made round, and also of wood, or other suitable material. This slot may be on either or both sides of the hole or recess B, shaft D being placed in hole B, Fig. 3, against spring E. The shaft D, being made the proper length to extend to the rounding corner of the frame, forms a covering or shutter for the hole A, Fig. 2. The end 4of shaft D I round off in conformity With the corner of the frame. I drill shaft D at a suitable distance from the end to receive the peg or pin F, Fig. 2, which latter, when inserted into the drilled hole in shaft D, through the slot O in the frame, holds or retains shaft D in place. The frame, atand about the slot C, I work out in a concave form, vas at H, of suitable size and depth, that I may cut off pin F evenwith the exterior of the frame, and yet have room to catch hold of said pin With the thumb or finger. This prevents any abrasion whatever by the pin F..

TheV operation is as follows: When shaft D is pressed back by catching the thumb on pin F, as shown in Fig. l, the end of shaft D recedes into hole B,.leaving hole A open or uncovered, when the pencil can be put in, as shown in Fig. 1;, and to take the pencil out pursue the same course. While holding the corner of the slate downward the pencil will fall out into the hand. When pressure is removed from pin F the spring E forces the shaft D out as far as pin F will move in the slot O, the end of shaft D then reaching just to the corner of the frame, making a neat iinish and permanent cover to hole A.

By means of my invention a slate-pencil can be kept conveniently, and carried with perfeet safety inside the frame of a school or other slate.

Beside the advantage of security, my invention is free from the objection of having any addition to the corner in the way of pins or nails or pieces of metal to mar and scratch the desk 5 also, it-is self-adjusting, and not liable to get out of order. 4

Instead of the pin F, otherl means may be employed to operate the shaft D. Any other form of spring may be used. The shaft D may be carried entirely through the frame, and the spring be annexed at its end; but I prefer it as shown.

What I claim is- 1. In combination with a slate-frame having recesses A and B and shaft D, provided with a pin, F, or equivalent holding and operating device, the spring E, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with the shaft D and pin F, of a slot, (l, in the slate-frame, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. In combination With a slate-frame having the recesses A B, shaft D, and spring E, the slot O, when provided With beveled edges H, as and for the purpose described and set CHARLES C. MOORE.
