e it known that l, FRED BECKER, a citiof the Republic of Switzerland, residing in Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State New York, have invented certain new and Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typevvriting machines, and more particularly to work-sheetcontrolling devices, and is herein disclosed as applied to an Underwood Standard typewi ting machine.
Heretofore for adjusting work-sheets for ertain kinds of Work, provision has been made of an aligning table placed above the platen and adjustable to different line-space positions with reference to the printing line and to diiferent letter-space positions along the platen. The adjustments for line-space position and letter-space position have usually been entirely independent, and such adjustments have been made at comparatively long intervals, a considerable number of work-sheets or cards being inserted and typed before a change of adjustment has become necessary.
In some classes of Work it becomes neces sary to shift the aligning table quickly, as, for example, when an entry is, to be made in one line on a work-sheet when the aligning table is in one letter-space position along the platen. and in another line when the table is in another letter-space position relative to the platen. Such conditions may arise in writing bills in connection with typing on other sheets in a combined typewriting and computing machine such, for example, as an Underwood-Hanson bookkeeping machine. There may be two separate operations in preparing" a bill. The bill may be rapidly inserted at the front of the other work-sheet and positioned by the aligning table which has been adjusted in the proper position. After completing the typing on the first line, which may be of descriptive matter with certain computations, the aligning table may be released and shifted quickly to the position for typing on the second line. the change in letter-space position of the aligninc table being necessary in order to enable the machine to effect tabulation or computation in the manner desired. Obviously in work of this sort, it is necessary to shift the aligning table rapidly from one position to another.
In other classes of Work it is desirable for an operator, in the course of a day. to make more or less frequent entriesof computation or tabulation upon different forms or sheets having certain dissimilar characteristics; such, for instance, as variations in line-length, or distance, between a side edge a sheet, usually caged at or adjacent one end of the platen, and the portion of the sleet desired to be located Within the computing zone or at a fixed columnar or tabulating position; or variations in the linespacing or distance, between the top edge and first Writing line in different Worksheets; or variations in both line-length and line-spacing in different types of sheets. Also in still other classes of work it is desired at different times to make corresponding sets of entries in different columnar positions on worksheets of one type; or in the same columnar position on work-sheets of dissimilar character, as hereinabove mentioned; or in different positions on workshe ts of dissimilar types. These conditions may be met by the provision of means for iraking more or less frequent adjustments for the accommodation of different sheets either by effecting alterations in the gaging means or in the mechanical devices utilizable for setting the tabular r computing mechanism, or in both gaging and mechanical setti 1g. For overcoming difficulties incident to such adjustments, a simplified device is provided of the character set forth herein, including a line-finder for quickly locating the writing line and a zone-finder for quickly locating the desired columnar location or zone; the line-finder and zone-finder being operatively associable as a combined linefinder and zone-finder for quickly locating a work-sheet in any predetermined writing position.
The main object of the invention is to provide means to enable an aligning table to ill) be rapidly shifted from one letter-space and line-space position to another, for the purposes stated and for analogous purposes. A further feature is the provision of means to enable the work-sheet to be held to the aligning table and moved with the table from one position to another. Still another feature enables the shiftable aligning table to adjustably gage work-sheets of different characteristics so that a rapid shifting of the aligning table may be resorted to for properly locating the work-sheets for writing at a desired columnar position, instead of resorting to the comparatively slow operation of resetting the tabular or computing mechanism. Other objects of the invention are to provide means, for the purposes described, simple in construction, economical to manufacture, effective in operation, and easily applied to machines of standard construction.
According to one form of the invention, an aligning table or plate having a leadingcdge gage and a side-edge gage is adjustably attached for truin up purposes to a bar extending from one end of the platen-frame to the other above the platen. This bar is provided with longitudinal slots in its ends, through which pass bolts extending through and held against rotation in substantially vertical slots in uprights forming parts of brackets attached to the ends of the platenframe. It will be seen that the aligning table may be shifted to various line-space positions and various letter-space positions. The bar may be secured in any adjusted position with reference to the uprights by nuts threaded on the bolts, the nuts preferably being provided with knurled heads to facilitate turning the same.
To determine the letter-space position of the aligning table along the platen, provision may be made of adjustable stops on the face of the bar nearest to the uprights, so that, when the bar is moved in either direction, its limiting position will be determined by one of the stops being brought into engagement with one of the uprights. To determine the linespace position of the aligning table, use may be made of adjustable stops at both ends of the slots in the uprights, so that the limiting line-space positions of the table may be determined by adjustable stops at the opposite ends of the slots in the uprights with which the heads of the bolts contact when the aligning table is in either one of its limiting positions. It will be seen that, according to this form of the invention. provision is made for but two line-space positions of the aligning plate and two letterspace positions thereof.
To enable the work-sheet to be moved with the aligning table, means are provided for holding the work-sheet to the table, so that the table in its movement will carry the sheet along with it to another writing position, thus eliminating handling or separate re-adjustment of the work-sheet after the table has been shifted to a new position.
According to another form of the invention, provision may be made for a greater number of line-space positions to which the aligning table may be set. To this end, provision may be made of a block for each upright slidable thereon, and through which passes the bolt extending through the two slots. the block being provided With a spring detent adapted to co-operate with recesses at line-space intervals on the uprights. It will be seen that the aligning plate, when the nuts have been released, may be rapidly shifted to move the work-sheet from one letter-space position to another, and from the original line-space position to another, determined by the detents entering recesses on the uprights, the aligning table then being secured into position by tightening the nuts.

A cylindrical platen 11 is mounted on an axle 12, journaled in the ends 13 of a platenframe 14:. The platen-frame comprises the usual rear paper-table 15, having fingers 16 extending around the lower part of the platen.
A work-sheet or card 17 may be introduced either in the usual manner over the rear paper-table, or may be inserted at the front of the platen, and typing effected thereon by means of types 18 mounted on type-bars 19.
To enable the work-sheet or card to be properly positioned for typing thereon, provision in this instance is made of an aligning table 20, having a leading-edge gage 21 and a side-edge gage 22. When a worksheet is introduced at the front of the platen, the feed-rolls (not shown) are in cast-off positions, and, for rapid work, it is found desirable to leave the feed-rolls in cast-off positions during the typing and to provide means on the aligning table to hold the work-sheet in position relative to the platen. For this purpose, a bracket 23 is secured to the rear face of the aligning table 20, near its left-hand edge, by any suitable means, dell as screws 24. The bracket 23 is preferably in the form of a. bar or strap, bent around the side-edge gage 22 and extending substantially parallel to the front face of the aligning table 20. A leafspring 25 is secured at its middle to the inner end of the bracket 23 by suitable means, such as a screw and is arched so that at one end it will engage the aligning table 20 near the side-edge gage 22, and at its other end the table 20 near its center, the ends of the spring 25 being upturned so as to facilitate the insertion of the work-sheet thereunder. It will be seen that the spring 25, engaging the work-sheet at two points spaced a substantial distance apart, will hold the work-sheet firmly on the aligning table 20.
The aligning table 20 is supported by a bar 26, and to enable the leading-edge gage 21 on the table to be trued up with reference to the writing line, the connection between the table and the bar is effected by means of screws 2? extending through lots 28 in the table 20 and threaded into the bar 26. Preferably, the table 20 is countersunk around the slots 28 so as to enable the screwheads to lie beneath the front face of the table 20. and prevent interference with the work-sheets placed on the ta le. The countersunk portions 29 may be formed by pressing the metal rearwardly around the slots,
' the result being that the table 20 will be slightly spaced from the bar 26 throughout the greater part of its extent.
To support the bar 26, provision is made of brackets 30, one at each end of the platenframe. Preferably, each bracket 80 is made of a single bar or strip having a fiat portion 31 to rest on the top of the corresponding end 13 of the platen-frame, the-bracl'ret being secured to the end of the platen-frame by means of screws 32 extending through the flat portion 31. At the forward end of the flat portion 31, the bracket 30 comprises a curved portion 33, extendingrearwatdly from the front end of the flat portion 31, and an upright 3 f slightly inclined to the rear. It will be seen that the portion 33 extends rearwardly over the head of the screw 82 at the front of the fiat portion 31. Provision is therefore made of an opening 35 above the forward screw 32 so as to enable manipulation of the screw by means of a tool inserted through said opening.
Each upright is provided with a slot 36 through which passes a bolt or screw 37, having a head 38 positioned at the rear of the upright and provided with flats 39 to engage the sides of the slot 36 to prevent turning of the bolt. Thebolt 37 also passes through a slot 4Q in the adjacent end of the bar 26, and the bar may be clamped in posiis intended for use in shifting the g g, table 20 rapidly to move the work-sheet or card from one line-space position to another and from one letter-space position to another, and it is desirable to provide adjustable means for limiting the movement of the aligning table, both in the line-space and letter-space directions. To llil'llithe letter-space movement of the aligning table 20, provision may be made of a stop i: at the inner end of each slot on the bar and guided by means of two screws 3 engaging in a slot -14, the screws when ti -ened serving to clamp the stop 4:2 in just-ed position. It will be seen that movement of the table 20 in either direction will be limited by engagement of one of the stops 4:2 with the adjacent upright infoven'ient of the 01. aligning table 20 in the line-space direction may be limited by stops as, one at each end of each of the slots 36, and adjustablv secured on the uprights by means of sdrews 46 extending through slots l? in the stops and threaded into the uprights.
.thCCOTCllilg to one use of the inrention, the aligning table is positioned, as shown in Figure l, with the left-hand stop in en gagement with the left-hand upright 3d and the heads 38 of the screws 37 resting on the steps at the lower ends of the slots 36. It should be understood that the various stops have been adius'ted in accordance with the requirement of the cards to be used. A card 17 is then inserted atthe front of the platen and gaged on the aligning table 20. It will be evident that the card 17 will ordinarily be brought beneath the spring 25 by insertion from the right under the righthand end of the spring. After the typi g has been effected on the line of the card :10 sitioned at the printing line, the nuts ll lll't loosened and the aligning table, shifted upwardly and to the right until the screwheads are brought into engagement with the upper pair of stops l5 and the right-hand stop 42 is brought into engagement with the right-hand upright 34-. he card 17, in this instance, is held on the aligning table 20 by means of the spring 25, so that the card is movable by and with the table; and thus, 1
when the table 20 has been moved, the card 17 will be positioned so that typing may be effected on a lower line thereof and with the card positioned in a differentlield longitudinallv of the plat n from that first used. Also the work-sheet will have been rapidly moved from one writingibosition to another without moving the platen carriage.
Obviously, the structure shown in Figure 1 may be used for different purposes. For
example, the aligning table 20 may b shifted along the uprights in the line-space direction without an shitting thereof tran versely of the machine, or it may be shifted transversely of the machine withoutshifting in a line-space direction.
Heretoiore when a typewriting machine has been set to accommodate work-sheets of one type by proper location of a side and a tabulator stop, either within or with out a certain zone, and it was desired to write upon a work-sheet of another type hav ing different line-len th characteristics, i. e., a different length or the writing line between a gaged side edge and the desired columnar writing position, it has been necessary to relocate either the side gage or the tabular mechanism, and perhaps also, in cases where computing was to be done, the denomination-selectors. in the present device the same results are accomplished by adjusting the aligning table 20 for transverse movement between the uprights a distance equal to the difiference between the line-lengths of di'llerent work-sheets, so that an adjustable side gage is afforded for typing within the computing zone, or in one and the same columnar riti position, upon work-sheets of ditlerent lin -lengths characteristics, the table 20 being moved to the different adjusted positions to side gage the dilferent work-sheets. Adjustment of the table 20 in the same manner is resorted to when it is desired to type in diiierent columnar positions upon work-sheets of uniform line-length characteristics as will be obvious. Likewise, the adjustments may be made to permit typing in difierent columnar positions upon work-sheets of different linelength characteristics. Also, the vertical adjustment may be availed of for typing upon different work-sheets in different writing positions, so that when it is desired to type upon one work-sheet in a writing posi tion determined by acertain letter-space zone at a certain line elevation, and upon another worksheet in writing position determined by a ditl'erent letter-space Zone at a different line elevation, the aligning table 20 constitutes a combined line-tinder and Zone-finder and is with rapidity shift-able in a continuous movement relatively to the platen carriage from one adjusted writing position for one work-s met to another adjusted writing position for the other worksheet.
It may be necessary in some kinds of Work to adjust the aligning table in more that two positions along the uprights. This requirement may be met by the modified form of the invention, as shown in Figure 4. In this form, provision may be made of a frame 48 to fit over each of the uprights. The head 38 of the bolt associated with a corresponding upright lies in an opening in the "frame at the rear of the upright, and the threaded portion of the screw passes hrough an opening in the front wall of the frame. The threaded portion of the screw 3'2, which extends beyond the "front wall of the frame 48, passes through the slot at the adjacent end of the bar 26, so that the bar is slidable along the front face of the frame 48. It will be seen that tightening of the nut l1 will clamp the be. 26 and the "frame %8 against the upright 3i and prevent their movement relative thereto. In this form of the invention, the stops e5 are omitted and the diii'erent vertical positions oi the bar 26 are determined by means of detent recesses 19, arranged at line-space distances on each of the uprights, and ot' a detent ball to co-operate with said rccesses, the ball 50 lying in a suitable opening 51 in the frame 18. and bein urgec to- 1 L) In/ ward the upright 3 1- by means of a spring 52 interposed between the ball and a keeper engaging the spring at its outer end. As here shown, the keeper 53 is in the form of flat plate held in position 'nst the outer face of the frame 4-8 by 1116.135 of a screw 5% about which it may be turned, so as to :;pose the outer end of the opening 51 to enable insertion or withdrawal of the ball 50 and spring 52.
In using the modified form of the invention, the nuts ll are loosened and the aligning table 20 shifted to bring the detent balls 50 into position to engage the proper recesses 49, and to bring one of the stops 4-2 on the bar 26 against the end of one of the frames 48. It will be seen that the detent device will hold the frames 48 in adjusted position determined thereby. The nuts 41 may then be tightened and the aligning table 20 will be positioned for use. It will be seen that the modified form of the invention, as shown in Figure l, enables adjustment through a much wider than the form shown in Figure 1.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, a platen-frame, an aligning table at the delivery side of the platen, a bar secured to said table and having longitudinal. slots at its ends, brackets extending upwardly from the ends oi": the platenframe, pins extending through said bracl ets and said slots, and means, including adjustable stops on said bar, to determine a left-hand position of said table for one part of the work and a right-hand position thereof for another part of the Work, thereby enabling a rapid adjustment from one of said positions to the other.

In a typewriting machine for use with mechanism for computing selectively numbers typed in different columns of a worksheet, in combination, a platen,'a traveling carriage therefor, an aligning table above the platen, a support extending upwardly from each end of the carriage, a connection between said table and each of said supports, permitting movement of the table in linespace direction or in letter-space direction on the support, so that the table may be shifted to different letter-space positions, either with or without changing the line-space position of the table, to vary the computations of numbers printed in the various columns, and a clamping device, comprising a single manually-operable controlling member, associated with each of said connections, adapted, when actuated, to hold the table against such movements on the corresponding support.
10. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, a platen-frame, an aligning table above the platen, a support extending upwardly from each end of the platenframe, means to connect said table with each of said supports, comprising a frame mounted on the support and shiftable therealong, said table being shiftable in letter-space direction with reference to each of said frames, and yieldable detent means whereby each frame may be yieldably held at different positions on the corresponding support.
11. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, a platen-frame, an aligning table above the platen, a support extending upwardly from each end of the platenframe, means to connect said table with each of said supports, comprising a frame mounted on the support and shiftable therealong. said table being shiftable in letter-space dircction with reference to said frames. y eldable detent means whereby each frame may be yieldably held at different positions on the corresponding support, and means associated with each of said connecting means to clamp the corresponding frame and said table against movement with reference to the support.
12. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, a platen-frame, an aligning table above the platen, a bar secured to said table, supporting means for said bar, carried by the ends of the platenframe and guiding said bar for longitudinal and vertical sliding movements, and yieldable detent means for supporting the bar in different positions'vertically.
13. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, a platen-frame, an, aligning table above the platen, a bar secured to said table, supporting means for said bar, carried by the ends of the platen-frame and guiding said bar for longitudinal and vertical sliding movements, yieldable detent means for supporting the bar in different positions vertically, and means for clamping said bar in any position to which it has been shifted.
14. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, a platen-frame, an aligning table, a bar secured to said table and having longitudinal slots in its ends, uprights on the ends of the platen-frame and provided with substantially vertical slots, pins extending through the slots in said bar in said uprights, to permit longitudinal and vertical movements of the aligning table, and yieldable detent means to detain the pins in different positions along the slots in said uprights.
15. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, a platen-frame, an aligning table, a bar secured to said table and having longitudinal slots in its ends, uprights on the ends of the platen-frame, provided with substantially vertical slots, bolts extending through the slots in said bar in said uprights, said bolts having flats thereon to cooperate with the sides of certain of said slots to prevent turning of the bolts, yieldable detent means to hold the bolts in different positions in the vertical slots, and nuts on the bolts whereby said bar and said uprights may be clamped, so as to prevent movement of the bar with re pect to the uprights.
16. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, a platen-frame, and means to facilitate writing on one line of a work sheet when the latter is over one field of the platen, and on another line when the worksheet is over another field of the platen, said means comprising an aligning table having leading-edge and side-edge gages, supporting means for said table, adapted to permit a rapid change vertically from one linespace position to another, and horizontally from one letter-space position to another, yieldable detent means to determine a plurality of line-spae positions for said table, and means to secure said aligning table in adjusted position.
