Be it known that l, Jnssn A. B. Sim-"r11, citizen of the United States, residing in Stamford. in the county of Fairlield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting hlachines, of which the following is a rapidly and accurately upon the typewriting machine, and relatively to each other, ori inal work-sheets, and work-sheets uponwhich it is desired to obtain carbon copies of the original, as for example happens in the maliing of entries simultaneously upon a bill and ledger sheet, by typing upon one and producing a carbon copv upon the other. Many devices have been .iurnished in these and other machines for aligning such sheets both upon the machines and relatively to each other, but many of said deviceslwere either complex or were not easilyjadjustable to accommodate the great variety of forms which frequently are used in certain offices.
Many, moreover, required the punching of; sheets to fit'over pins which were used in effecting the aligning.
According to the present invention, there may be provided a comparatively simple deviceadapted to be readily attached to the typewriting machine, which is adapted to both gage and hold in their gaged positions one or more work-sheets which maybe col lated or gaged to separate positions upon the machine. According to the present invention, the
record sheet 8 and original sheet 6 maybe separately gaged and then held inplace, before the handle 12 is actuated to throw the feed-rolls 10 and 11 against the platen. Having thus described my invention, I claim: i
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a line-spacing platen, a front collating table above the platen at the delivery side thereof and having a side-edge gage, and a universal paper-gage mounted along a side of the table and extending in the direction of the travel of the work-sheets, for facilitating repeated adjustments of the sheets relatively to the machine and to one another, comprising a multiplicity of gaging elements at line-space intervals and movable into positions to grip the work-sheets.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a line-spacing revoluble platen, of a front collating table above the platen at the delivery side thereof, and a universal gage on the collating table for gaging the sheets of a set at intervals to position and reposition them with relation to each other, said gage comprising fingers at line-space intervals, each arranged to serve the dual function of gripping one of the sheets against the collating table and gaging another of the sheets by engagement with its leading edge. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of a front collating table above the platen at the delivery side thereof, and a series of gripping devices arranged along the table in the direction of the travel of the work-sheets, each being individually movable into position to grip a part of the work and act as a leading-edge gage for another part thereof, said devices having their gaglng portlons arranged at equal intervals along the collating table, the extent of such intervals being commensurate with the distance that the platen is-advanced bya line-space operation.

In a typ'ewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen and feed-rollers co-operating therewith, of a frontcollating table above the platen at the delivery side thereof, and means on the collating table for facilitating repeated adjustments of the work-sheets in the machine with relation to the machine and to each other as the typewriting progresses, saidmeans comprlsing a series of gripping fingers at each side of the collating table adapted to be moved individ ually to positions in whichthey will be effective to grip a part of the sheets and to serve as gages for assisting in separately advancing other sheets predetermined distances from any positions to which they may have been advanced by the line-spacing of the platen and feedrollers, means for retaining the gripping fingers, in efiective positions,
and means at each side of the collating table for simultaneously withdrawing from efii'ec-' tive positions all of the gripping fingers at their respective sideswhich, are in effective 4 positions.
