According to the'present invention, a machine adapted to use a com paratively wide web may be readily transtormed into a machine adapted to use two webs which may be kept-in, the ma chine side by side, and which may be typed upon alter-- nately, or one of which may be used for con siderable periods of time while the other is left idle.
The present invention has especial. utility for typing alternately upon complementary work-sheets arranged in continuous or web form, and these wees, whichpass through the machine side by side',-that is, edge to edge, may or may not be fan-folded webs By complementary work-sheets it is meant that the successi qe sheets making up one of the webs bear a complementary relation to the successive sheets making up the other web. That is to say, the worksheets in one web bear a certain definite relation to the work-sheets in the other web, this relation being dependent upon the nature of the "forms which may havebeen printed upon the work-sheets, or "it may depend upon the character of the cut fies which are to be typed upon complementary work sheets, or: it may depend upon both of these factors. For example, in using a continuous billing type- 7 writing machine to write on the successive sheets of a web, and to write also upon other successive web sheets which are comple' mentary to the first,it is necessary to alter-' nate the writing on one sheet with that on; the other. With the ordinary tan-fold or;
continuous'billing' type of machine, it'would be'necessaryto remove one of thewebs from the machine together withlitscarbon -holdingcarriage, and insert the other web in the machine, at the same time placing in position thereon its carbon-holding carriage, thereby. causing waste of time and liability of error.
The present invention provides for guid v ing and laterallygaging a plurality, such as a pair, of webs, or web-sets, side'by side to and" around a unitary or sii'igle-section platen.
In order to enablethe utilizationof 'nar-' row webs without more extensively modiiying the structure of theme'chan'ism, the usualbars to which the carbon sheets are clipped may be replaced by bars comprising slitting members adapted to slit the fan-fold webs at theirlfo'lds, where they are usually per'-' tor'ated', sothat the Webs are slit onreachingthe carbon clip barsor just before reaching themfthus permitting each clip-bar in extend'across beyong the folds of one fan-fold web and hold a'carbon for one ormore other tenfold webs. Inasmuch as the carbon clip bars in the usual fan-fold machine are inter changeable 'to a large degree, the usual bars may be readily replaced by the bars modified. according to the present inventiom'without the need of even calling in a repair man.
In order to guide the webs, the usual edge gages upon the carbon carriage may be supplemented by additional edge gages, so that each fan-fold'web, or other form of web set,'is 'gaged at each edge thereof. The usual rear bar over which the webs are drawn may, it desired, also include edge gages tog-age the various webs. Theordinary leading edge gage which extends abovethe swinging paper table in the usual fan fold machines may be replaced by a separate end gage for each fan-fold web,'said end gages advantageously being allsupported; from a single bar, which is adapted to'be attached where the usual end gage is attached.

Figure 5 is a perspective view of aslitting to provide for straightening out and easing the webs, whereby the webs may be drawn forward and gaged at their leading edges, as heretofore. 1n orderto rotate the platen, there is provided the usual line-space handle 14, which is adapted to rotate the usual line-space wheel 15, which is fasttO a pinion 16 and meshes with a pinion 17 upon the shaft 12, which, in turn, meshes with a pinion 18 fast to the axle of the platen 10, with the result that every time the line-space handle is actuated to turn the wheel 15 it turns the platen 10. I The carriage 13 is mounted upon rails cluding the rail 19, and is fed along in the usual manner whenever any type-bar 2O rises to print upon a work-sheet passed around' the platen. The fan-fold billing machine also usually includes a rear extension 21 of the carriage having rails 22 and 23, upon which a carbon carriage 24 is adapted to be reciprocated by a handle 25. The extension 21 also includes a cross-bar 26 connecting the rails 22 and 23, which support the cross-bar 27 over which the initially fan-folded complemental webs 28 and 29 are adapted to be drawn past the carbon carriage and under the platen and up over the front paper table 30. For supporting the rear end of the extension 21, there may be provided a rail 31 fast upon an extension 32 extending rearwardly from the typewriter carriage. The carbon carriage 24 includes the usual foundations 33 at each side, provided with the usual openings 34 into which pins 35 upon carbonpaper clip-bars 36 are adapted to fit interchangeably.
According to the present invention, each carbon clip-bar 36 may be adapted to slit one fold of each web. Since there are shown two webs 28 and 29, each bar is venient to guide theedge of the other web.
In addition to the slitting devices 37 and 38, each carbon clip bar is provided with a clip 39 adapted to hold a carbon sheet for each sheet of web upon which a carbon copy is desired, and for the purposes of the present disclosure each clip bar comprises two of the clips 39, one pivoted on the usual pin 40, and the other on a rivet 40, so that they may be swung rearwardly away from their clip bar to permit the carbon sheets 41 to be folded over the end of the clip bar and then held to the bar by swinging the clip 39 gainst them. The fiat rivet 40 permits the adjacent web to slip smoothly over it. Thus it will be clearly seen, as diagrammatically shown in Figure 4, that two fan-fold webs having the same number of folds maybe slit by the carbon clip bars which extend across them. The slitting devices have been found to be very effective if made in the form shown, in Figure 5, in which each slitting device is a wire slotted to, slide over the clip bar 36 and to be held theretoas by soldering, the wire also having a turned-over end 42 to prevent its end, by any accident, from marring the surface of the web sheet. An angle of approximately 60 has been found to be a very eflicient angle for the slitting device.
For guiding the . complemental webs 28 and 29 up to the carbon carriage, each foundation 33 is provided with the usual opening 43, into which a thumb-screw 44 is adapted to be screwed, thus holding in place not only the usual edge gage 45, but also a supplemental edge gage 46 for the free edge of the-web, there being on the two foundations taken together enough edge gages to have a separate edge gage for each edge of each web. The edge gages 46 may comprise right-angle extensions 47, which are curved down and then horizontally to- 'clear the rearmost clip bar 36, and then bent upwardly to form an edge gage 50 against which the edge of the web is adapted to bear. When a form or other suitable stretch of web has been typed, the usual handle 51 is pushed rearwardly to release the swing frame 11, and then the swing frame is swung forward in the usual manner, and the web which has been typed is drawn forward and gaged against the appropriate one of the adjustable end gages 52, of which there is one onceach of the extensions or supports 53, extending above the paper table 30. If the table 30 is-p-rovided with a roll 54, as it sometimes is,,at the top, the rollis cut away at 55 to permit the support 53 to lie nearly at the surface of the table. The two supports '53 may spring from a single bar 56, which is adapted to be held by the usual thumb masses After the web has been gaged, the carbon carriage is pushed rearwardly by the handl 25 until it strikes the usual stop 58.
The operation of handling either web is, in general, the same as in the ordinary fanfold billing machine. In the machine of the present invention, the typing ordinarilyis done alternately upon the complementary work-sheets making up the two webs. Should one of the webs not be used, the one not typed for the time being may be allowed to take care of itself, or its end may hang idly over the bar 27. To further guide the webs at the bar 27, the bar, which is usually removable, is provided with the usual screw 59 to enable a suitable number of stops or side gages 60 to be adjusted thereon, so that there is a side gage at the bar 27 for each side of each of the webs.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others. Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1.. In a typewriting machine of the continuous billing or fan-fold type, in combination, a unitary or single-section rotative platen, carbon-holding bars for supporting carbon-sheets between the plies of fanfolded webs arranged side by side and thus fed to the platen, acarbon carriage movable toward and away from the platen at the introductory side thereof and provided at one side of the machine with a support for cer tain of said bars and provided at the other side of the machine with a support for I others of said bars, said bars being of sufficient length to pass in relatively overlapping relation from one to another of said webs and between the plies thereof, and websevering means at the rear of said bars for slitting said webs at their folds to provide for the passing of said bars from one to another of the initially fan-folded webs.
2. In a typewriting machine of the corn tinuous billing or fan-fold type, in combination, a traveling carriage, a unitary or single-section platen rotatively mounted on the carriage, carbon-holding' bars movable upon the carriage to and'from the platen at the introductory side thereof, said bars being of sufficient length and so'arranged in overlapping relation as to extend from one to another and between the superposed plies of a plurality of webs fed side by side to the platen, and web-slitting devices located at the rear of said bars and movable therewith to sever the plies of said webs one from the other at fan-folds formed therein.
3. In a type-writingmachine, the combination with a traveling carriage and a carbon carriage shiftable thereon, of a rear guide over which a plurality of fan-folded webs are adapted to be drawnside by side,
bars upon said carbon carriage upon which carbon sheets for said webs are adapted to be clipped, a pair of gages for each. web, adapted to be separately mounted on said carbon carriage, and means for slitting said webs at their folds behind the carbon sheets to enable the bars to carry the carbons rearwardly between the webs;
4. A carbon-paper-carrying blade having a web-severing device attached thereto intermediate itsends, and a separate carbonpaper-clip adapted to hold a separate. carbon sheet upon each side of said severing device.
5. In a typewriting machine of the continuous billing or fan-fold type, in combination, a. unitary or single-sectionrotative platen, a carbon carriage movable relatively toward and away from the platen the introductory side thereof and" including a foundation at each side for detachably receiving carbon-holding bars, and a pair. of relatively adjustable side-edge gages mount ed upon each of said foundations to be relatively adjusted to the width of the respective webs. v 6. In a typewriting machine of the continuous billing or fan-fold type, in combination, a letter-spacing carriage. a unitary or single-section platen .rotatively mounted on the carriage, a frame forming an extension at the back otthe carriage, a carbon.- carriage movable on said frame extension toward and. away from the platen, a plurality of carbon-holding bars mounted upon the carbon carriage and'of suiiicient length to pass between and separate the superposed plies of a plurality of setsof webs fed side by side to the platen, means for guiding said webs to and past the carbon carriage and said carbon-holding bars thereon, and 1 websevering means at the rear of said carbonholding bars to provide for utilizing fanfolded webs. In a typewriting machine-the combination with a carbon-paper-carriage, of a carbon-papcr-carrying blade extending inwardly from each side of said carriage, means upon each blade for severing a plurality of folds, meansupon each blade for holding carbon sheets thereupon, and guides behind the blades for guiding the web past them.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carbon-paper-carriage, of afoundationat each side thereof. a plurality of carbon-papercarrying blades detachably mounted upon said foundations, a plurality of carbon-holding devices arranged along the length ofeach of said blades, and a web severing device'hon each of saidl'ilades in termediate its ends and between said carbon-holding devices.
9. In a typewriting machine,.the combi nation with a carbon paper-carriage, of a foundation at each side thereof, a plurality of carbon-paper-carrying blades detachably mounted upon said foundations, a plurality of carbon-holding devices arranged along the length of each of said blades, a websevering device on each of said blades intermediate its ends and between said carbonholding devices, and another web-severing device carried by a free end of each of said blades.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination witha carbon-paper-carriage, of a foundation at each side thereof, a plurality of carbon-paper-carrying blades detachably mounted upon said foundations, a plurality of carbonholding devices arranged along the length of each of said blades, a websevering device on each of said blades inter mediate its ends and between said carbonholding devices, means for guiding the webs at the carbon-paper-carriage, and separate means for guiding them behind the carriage.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carbon-paper-carriage, of a foundation at each side thereof, a'plurality of carbonpaper-carrying blades detachably mounted upon said foundations, a plurality of carbon holding devices arranged along the length of each of said blades, a websevering device on each of said blades intermediate its ends and between said carbonholding devices, another web-severing device carried by a free end of each of said blades, means for guiding the webs at the carbon- .paper-carriage, and separate means for guiding them behind. the carriage.
12. In a typewriting machine of the continuous billing or fan-fold type, in combination, a letter-spacing carriage, a unitary or single-section platen rotatively mounted on the carriage, and means for supporting and guiding a plurality of webs side by side to and around the platen from the rear or introductory side thereof, said supporting and guiding means comprising a frame forming an extension at the back of the carriage, and side-edge gages carried by said frame extension for independently guiding both edges of each of said webs.
13. In a typewriting machine of the continuous billing or fan-fold type, in combination, a letter-spacing carriage, aunitary or single-section platen rotatively mounted on the carriage, and means for supporting and guiding a plurality of webs side by side to and around the platen from the rear or introductory side thereof, said supporting and guiding means comprising a frame forming an extension at the back of the cartriage, and side-edge gages carried by said frame extension for independently guiding both edges of each of said webs, said gages being adjustable to accommodate webs of different widths.
-14E..In atypewriting machine of the continuous billing or fan-fold type, in combination, a letter-spacing carriage, a unitary or single-section platen rotatively mounted on the carriage, and means for supporting and guiding a plurality of webs side by sideto and around the platen from the rear or introductory side thereof, said supporting and guiding means comprisinga frame forming an extension at the back of the carriage, a pair of side-edge gages for each web mounted upon said frame extension and laterally adjustable relatively to each other to accommodate webs of different widths, and a second pair of similarly adjustable sideedge gages for each web between the firstnamed gages and the platen.
15. In a typewriting machine of the continuous billing or fan-fold type, in combination, a letter-spacing carriage, a unitary or single-section platen rotatively mounted on the carriage, a carbon-carriage movable relatively toward and away from the platen at the introductory side thereof, a carbonholding bar mounted at one of its ends on the carbon-carriage and of sufiicient length to pass between and separate the superposed plies of a plurality of sets of webs fed side by side to the platen, and a plurality of sets of side-edge gagesmounted on the carboncarriage for guiding both edgesof each set of webs.
16. In a typewriting machine ofthe continuous billing or fan-fold type,.in combination, a letter-spacing carriage, a unitary or single-section platen rotatively mounted on the carriage, a frame forming anextension the back of the carriage, a carbon-carriage movable on said frame extension toward and away from the platen, a carbonholding bar mounted at one of its ends on the carbon-carriage and projecting substantially parallel with theplaten to a sufficient extent to pass between and separate-the superposed plies of a plurality of sets ofwebs fed side by side to the platen, a plurality of sets of side-edge gages mounted on the carbon-carriage for guiding'both edges of each set of webs, and another plurality. of sets of side-edge gages mounted on said frame extension at the rear of the carbon-carriage for preliminarily guiding both edges of each set of webs. 1
17. A carbon-holding device for use in a typewriting machine with a fan-fold web and a set of superposed plies at one side of said web. comprising a carbon-holding bar supported at one end and extending from the supported end, first between adjacent plies of the web to support a carbon-sheet therebetween, and then between adjacent plies of the set to support a carbon-sheet therebetween, and a web-severing device mounted upon said carbon-holding bar in position to sever the adjacent plies at one edge of the fan-fold webto permit oneof the several plies to pass above and the other below the bar.
18. In a typewriting machine of the continuous billing or fan-told type, in combination, a letter-spacing carriage, a unitary or single-section platen rotatively mounted on the carriage, a carbon-carriage movable relatively toward and away from the platen at the introductory side thereof, a carbonholding bar mounted at one of its ends on the carbon-carriage and of sufiicient length to pass between and separate the super osed plies of a plurality of sets of webs te side by side to the platen, a plurality: of sets of side-edge gages mounted on the carbon-carriage for guiding both edges of each set of webs, and a web-severing device carried by the carbon-holding bar at a median point thereon to provide for utilizing a fan-folded web adjacent to the mounting end of the carbon-holding bar and whereby said bar may project beyond the severed fan-tolded web to and between the superposed plies of a next adjacent web or set of webs.
19. In a typewriting machine of the continuous billing or fan-fold type, in combination, a letter-spacing carriage, a unitary or single-section platen rotatively mounted on the carriage, a frame forming an extension of the carriage at the rear or introductory side of the platent, acarbon-carriage mount ed to travel on said frame extension toward and away from the platen, a plurality of carbon-holding bars substantially parallel with the platen and mounted on the carboncarriage at opposite sides thereof to project inward in overlapping relation so as to pass between and separate thesuperposed plies of a plurality of sets of webs fed side by side to the platen, a pair of side-edge gages for each web-set mounted on said frame extension at the rear of the carbon-carriage and laterally adjustable relatively to each other to accommodate web-sets of different widths, a second pair of similarly adjustable side-edge gages for each web-set mounted on the carbon-carriage, a web-severing device carried by the freee end of each said carbonholding bar, and another web-severing device mounted upon each carbon-holding bar intermediate of its ends, whereby a pair of initially fan-folded websmay be used.

A carbon-holding device for use in a typewriting machine with two tan-folded webs arranged side by side, f comprising a carbon-holding bar having a free end and supported at. its other end so as to pass between and to hold separate carbon-sheets betweeniadjacent plies of both the webs, a web-severing device carried by the free end of said carbon-holding bar to sever the adjacent plies of one web to enable them to pass on opposite sides ot the bar, and an- 115 other web-severing device mounted upon said carbon-holdingbar intermediate of its ends, to sever. the adjacent plies of the other of the bar. 7 a

25. A carbon-holding device for a typewriting machine, comprising a carbon-holdi'ng bar, a web-severing device mounted upon said carbon-holding bar intermediate of its ends, and a carbon-holding device on the carbon-holding bar at each side of said severing device for holding a separate carhon-sheet on the bar at each side of said severing device.
26. A carbon-holding device for a typewriting machine, comprising a carbon-hold ing bar having a free end and adapted to be supported at its other end, a web-severing device carried by the free end of said carhon-holding bar, another web-severing device mounted upon the carbon-holding bar intermediate of its ends, and a carbon-hold 'ing device on said carbon-holding bar at each side of said intermediate severing device.
27. A carbon-holding device for a typewriting machine, comprising a carbon-holding bar having a free end and adapted to be supported at its other end, a websevering device carried by the free end of said carboil-holding bar, another web-severing device mounted upon the carbon-holding bar intermediate of its ends, and means for bold ing a separte carbon-sheet on said carbonho-lding bar at each side of said intermediate severing device.
28. In a typewriting machine of the con the adjacent plies of the different tinuous billing or fan-fold type, in com bination, a letter-spacing carriage, a unitary or single-section rotative platen, a frame in which the platen is mounted on said carriage to enable it to be displaced therein to provide for the straightening out and drawing forward of a plurality of webs passing side by side around the platen, an independently adjustable leading-edge gage for each of said Webs at the delivery side of the platen, and means for supporting and guiding a plurality of said webs side by side to and around the platen from the rear or introductory side thereof, said supporting and guiding means comprising a frame forming an extension at the back of the carriage, and side-edge gages carried by said frame extension for independently guiding both edges of each of said web's, said gages being adjustable to accommodate webs of different widths.
29. In a typewriting machine of the continuous billing or fan-fold type, in combination, a lettersspacing carriage, a unitary or single-section rotative platen, a frame in which the platen is mounted on said carjria'ge to enable-it to be displaced therein to provide for the straightening out and drawing forward. of plurality of sets of webs passing side by side around the platen, an independently adjustable leaclin'g-edge gage said gages being ad ustable to accommodate webs of different widths.
30. In a typewriting machine of the continuous billing or fan-fold type, in combination, a letter-spacing carriage, a unitary or single-section rotative platen, a frame in which the platen is mounted on said carriage to enable it to be displaced therein to provide for the strenghtening out and drawing forward of a plurality of sets of webs passing side by side around the platen, an independently adjustable leading-edge for each of said sets of webs at the delivery side of the platen, a carbon-carriage movable relatively toward and away from the platen at the introductory side thereof, a carbon-holding bar mounted at one of its ends on'the carbon-carriage and of sufiicient length to pass between and separate the superposed plies of said plurality of sets of webs as they are fed side by side to the platen, a plurality of sets of side edge gages mounted on the carbon-carriage for guiding both edges of each set of said webs, said gages being adjustable to'accommodate webs of different widths, and a web-severing device carried by the carbon-holdingbar intermediate of its ends to provide for utilizing a fan-folded web adjacent to the mounting end of the carbonholding bar and whereby said bar may project beyond the severed fan-folded web to and between the superposed plies of a next adjacent web or set of webs.
31. In a typewriting machine of the continuous billing I or fan-fold type, in .combination, a letter-spacing. carriage, a unitary or single-section rotative platen, a frame in which the platen is mounted on said carriage to enable it to be. displaced therein to provide for the straightening out and drawing forward of a plurality of sets of webs passing side by side around the platen, an independently adjustable leading-edge gage for each of saidsets' of webs at the delivery side of the platen, a carbon-carriage movable relatively toward and away from the platen at the introductory side thereof, a carbon-holding bar mounted at one of its ends on the carbon-carriage and of sufficient length to pass between and separate gages mounted on the carbon-carriage for guiding both edges of each set of said webs, said gages being adjustable to accommodate webs of different widths, a web-severing device carried by the carbon-holding bar intermediate of its ends to provide for utilizing a fan-folded web adjacent to the mounting end of the carbon-holding bar and whereby said bar may project beyond the severed fan-folded web to and between the plies of a next adjacent web or set of webs, and a separate carbon-holding device for each web-set mounted upon the carbonholding bar at each side of said severing device.
32. In a typewriting machine of the continuous billing or fan-fold type, in combination, a unitary or single-section rotative platen, a carbon-carriage movable relatively toward and away from the platen at the introductory side thereof and including a foundation at each side of the machine, carhon-holding bars extending from said foundations and so arranged and of sufficient length to pass from one to another and between the superposed plies of a pair of sets of webs fed side by side to the platen, and a pair of relatively adjustable side-edge gages mounted upon each of said foundations for the respective sets of webs and being relatively adjustable to accommodate webs of diiferent widths.
In a typewriting machine of the continuous billing or fan-f0ld type, the combination with a unitary or single-section rotative platen relatively movable into and' out of position to clamp superposed plies of a plurality of sets of webs for feeding said sets of webs side by side to and around the platen, of a holder for a carbon-sheet, said holder being supported at one end to be inserted between the plies of said plurality of sets of webs said holder being mov able longitudinally of the plies to change the position of the carbon-sheet when the platen is at the non-clamping position, and
separate sets of side-edge gages for independently guiding each of said sets of webs in its approach to said carbon-holder and to the platen.

In a typewriting machine of the continuous billing or fan-fold type, the coinbination with a unitary or single-section rotative platen, of means for guidlng superposed plies of a plurality of sets of webs with interleaved carbon-sheets side by side into the machine and around the platen so that the normalcourse of the plies of the sets of webs is tortuous, said guiding means including separate sets of side-edge gages for independently guidingeach of saidjs'ets of webs in its approach to the platen, and means operable at any rotative position of the platen for raising the platen sufliciently to relieve the interleaved carbon-sheets of binding action and afiord a clear path for direct advance of the webs in substantially flat condition.
