SHEET GRLiPPEB.
Application filed March 28, 1924. Serial No. 702,546.
To all whom it may concern: Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. HARROLD, taken on the line i i of Figure 1 looking a citizen of the United States, residing in in the direction of the arrows; 55
the city of Cleveland, in the county of Cuya- Figure 5 is an end view of Fig. 3; and

My invention relates to improvements in Referring to the drawings, more particuthe gripping devices usually employed in larly Figs. 1 and 2, the delivery-bar 7 is printing presses for transferring sheets of suitably mounted in the delivery chains 8 paper, or stock, from one member to another. (only one set being shown), and the gripper 65 The objects of my invention are, among shaft 9 is journalled at both ends in the other things, to provide an improved sheetbrackets 10 mounted on the chains 8 so as :arrier mechanism of this character, in which to oscillate to open and close the two sets separate pairs of grippers are mounted in of grippers carried by such shaft 9. Se spaced-apart relationship on a cross gripper cured to one end of the shaft 9 is the arm 11 70 bar, whereby a slip sheet as well as a printed hown in Figs. 1 and 2) carrying the camsheet may be seized and carried by my double roller 12 which is adapted to ride over the gripper mechanism, one set of the grippers fixed cam 13 to rock the shaft 9 in a clockt ki th li h t d th th s t th wise direction in the usual manner to open main or printed sheet; furthermore to proh grippers.
vide novel and effective means to open one in Figure l I have shown two pairs of set of grippers without disturbing the other grippers mounted in spaced-apart position set both of which sets are normally main 011 the shaft 9, and detailed description tained in closed position. of, one pair will suffice for both. The
A further feature of novelty, more parshorter or main sheet gripper 14 is mounted ti larly i o bi ati with a h i ld with its forked ends around the shaft 9 3O li i th r i i f i d means andis fre to rotate thereon; between the embodied with my improved double-gripper forked ends of such gripper 14 is the split mechanism whereby a lip heet may be adcollar 15 rigidly aiiizzed t0 the shaft 9 in vanced to one set of grippers on the deliveryy p d t r in d position by the sorewbar and then another sheet (usually a printed l 16- The collar 15 carries the dog 17 35 sheet) may b th r aft r ad d t th to bear against the shoulder 18 on the undersame delivery-bar, the double sets of grippers Slde 0f the gripper 14:. The COil spring 19 serving to convey such slip sheet and printed Secured between the lug 2O affixed to the sheet in superposed position along the deg pp 14 andthe dog 17 on the collar 15 livery and then droppin b th li d asshown in Figure normally holds the printed sheets on the delivery pile. grlppers 14 closed agalnst the contact block In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 22 on the delivery bar 7 with the dog 17 in Shows an d l ti f y i d contact wlth the shoulder 18 as shown 1n sheet-gripper mechanis n mounted the Figure 4. When the Shaft 9 1S rocked III a usual chain-delivery with the right hand end Clockwisedlrectlon h g p 14 broken off, such figure illustrating one emis opellediby the g 17 movmg p y bodiment f my inventi to the right against the shoulder 18 on the Figure 2 is an enlarged side view of a g pp Y pair of grippers mounted on the delivery The longer or sl p sheet gripper 23 1s chains; also mounted with its forked ends around 50 Figure 3 is an enla g d ti l i the shaft 9 and is also free to rotate thereon;
taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 looking between t forked ds of he g ipper 23 in the direction of th arrows; is the split collar 24 rigidly secured to the shaft 9 in any predetermined position by the screw-bolt 25. The collar 24 carries the projecting dog 26 adapted to bear upwardly against the shoulder 27 formed on the under side of the gripper 23 to open the gripper 23 from its closed position on the contact block 28 carried by the delivery bar 7. As shown in Figure 3. vi'hen the gripper 23 is closed on the block 28, the dog 26 is not in contact with the shoulder 2. Coiled about the shaft 9 is the torsion spring 29, one end of which is suitably secured to the collar 30, fastened to shaft 9 by set screw 31. while the other end of the spring 29 passes under one of the forked ends of the gripper 23 and bears on the top of the lug 21 on the lower end of the gripper 23. This spring 29 acts to take care of the greater rocking movement of the shaft 9, since the gripper 23 must hold the slip sheet fast against the block 28 when the gripper 1% is opened to seize the main or printed sheet. As shown in Figs. 1. 2 and 8 the slip sheet gripper 23 owing to its position with the contact block on the delivery bar 7 seizes the slip sheet somewhat before the gripper 1 1 takes the main sheet, when the delivery is moving as shown in Figure 2.
Referring to Figures 1 and (3, the camroller 12 is yieldingly held in a depending position ready to snap off the cam 13 (Fig. 2) by the following mechanism: Surrounding the delivery bar '4' is the split collar 32 secured by the screw bolt 33; the collar 32 is connected to the collar 34 journalled on the shaft 9 by the bar The collar 32 carries the dependingslotted bracket 36 through which passes the free end of the rod 37 pivoted on the pin 38 secured to the collar 39 rigidly afixed to the shaft 9 by the set screw 40; coiled about the rod 3'? is the expansion spring 4:1 one end bearing against the bracltet 36 while the other end is fastened to the collar The force of the spring ll tends to rock the gripper shaft 9 in an anti-clockwise direction to force the cam-roller arm 11 to approach the vertical when the cam 12 rides off the cam 13.
The operation of my improved sheetgripper mechanism on the chain delivery 8, when seizing both a slip sheet and printed sheet to thereafter carry same is as follows: hen the delivery chains 8 are passing to the right (Fig. 2) both the gripper 1 1 and gripper 23 are closed against their respective contact blocks 22 and 28. As the cam-roller 12 rides up the cam 13 the gripper-shaft 9 is rocked in a clockwise direction (Figs. 3 and l) which movement immediately opens the gripper 1 1 with the dog 17 lifting against the shoulder 18; as the roller 12 rides on toward the high part of the cam 13, the shaft 9 is further rocked in the same direction against the tension of the torsion spring 29, which movementbrings the dog 26 against the shoulder 27 to lift the gripper 23 off the contact block 28. At this moment a slip sheet is fed to the gripper 23 with the blocl: 22 acting as a stop and the gripper 23 immediately closes on such sheet st the block 28; later on in the cycle the printed she-e is transferred to the gripper 14 which then seizes such printed sheet, the closing of both grippers being effected through the mechanism actuated by he spring 41 when the roller 12 snaps off the cam 13. Thereafter during the forward run of the delivery chains 8, both slip and printed sheets are carried in superposed position to be thereafter dropped together on the delivery pile. I
Vi hile the construction herein shown embodies the invention in a preferred form, it will be understood that changes and variations may be made in the various parts without departin from the principles and scope of the invention or sacrificing its chief advantages.
