In its. preferred embodiment, such as that illustrated and. described in the present application, theinvention contemplatesthe provision of. sheet delivery devices for a fiat bed press which comprise an. auxiliary delivery pile carrying. frame pivotally connected. to the press frame for swing-- ing movement in a horizontal. plane, and a normally horizontally disposed delivery conveyor frame which is also pivotally attached to. the press frame but is disposed. upon ahorizontal pivot for vertical swinging movement. to a raised. position to provide access to the form bed. The. horizontally swinging pile carrying frame and the vertically swinging. conveyor frame are op-- eratively connected by mechanism which insures simultaneous movement of these frames to and. from their operative and displaced positions.
Another object of the invention is the provi-.
sion; in these. operative. connections, of counterbalancing means for. the frame which. is to. be lifted against the force of gravity. A still further object is. the provision of means. for retain.- ing the frames in their extreme. positions in. either direction.

In order to deliver the printed sheets from the impression cylinder ll of the press to-the1pi1e- P supported by the frame I4, there is provided a delivery conveyor which may beof any suitabletype; but which in the present exemplary embodiment comprises a chain gripper conveyor having two parallel sets of chains 45- which are" trained around the pairs of sprocket wheels 46 mounted at each end of the conveyor upon transverse shafts 41. Gripper members indicated very diagrammatically at 48 may be disposed at intervals along the chains 45 for the purpose of seizing the sheets as they are released from the impression cylinder grippers and transporting them to a position directly above the delivery pile P whereupon they are released and allowed to fall upon the pile. The delivery conveyor is carried by the normally horizontally disposed frame 50 which is pivoted coaxially with the inner conveyor shaft 41 to the upper side frames of the press adjacent the impression cylinder. The outer portion of the frame 50 is adapted to rest upon the upper overhanging portion of the inverted L-shaped auxiliary frame l4.
When access to the form bed I2 is desired, the frame 50 is raised about its pivot to the position shown in Figure 4 of the drawings, and in this figure it will be seen that both of the frames l 4 and 50 are disposed in their displaced positions so that access to the bed of the press is. readily obtained.
In accordance with the provisions of the invention, means are provided for interconnecting the two delivery frames for simultaneous movement to and from their operative and displaced positions. As more readily observed in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings, the rotating pintle shaft 38 is provided with a bevel gear 55 which meshes with another bevel gear 56 carried by the transverse shaft 60 mounted in suitable bearings carried by the main press frame I8. Rigidly secured to this transverse shaft 60 adjacent each side of the press are the brackets 62 which comprise crank arms adapted to be oscillated by rotation of the rock shaft 60. Pivotally connected to the ends 63 of these cranks 62 and extending upwardly therefrom are the links 64, the upper ends of which are pivotally connected as at 65 with each side of the delivery conveyor frame 50. It will be readily understood that when the frame I4 is swung horizontally from the position shown in Figure 1 through an angle of ninety degrees to the position shown in Figure 4, the shaft 38 and the inter-geared shaft 60 will each rotate through a corresponding angle of ninety degrees. Consequently, the brackets 62 will swing through a similar angle and, through the links 64, the conveyor frame 50 will be raised sufficiently to provide access to the bed at the same time that the pile carrying frame [4 is swung aside.
Counterbalancing means are provided for neutralizing the weight of the frame 58 and aiding in the simultaneous swinging of the two frames. Each of the crank brackets 62 are provided with offset portions to which is pivotally connected as at H the upper end of a rod 12. This rod 12 is telescopically received within a tube 14, the lower end of which is pivotally connected to the main frame 10 as at I5. The upper end of the rod 12 and the lower end of the tube 14 are provided with spring seatsbetween which is adapted to be compressed the coil spring 76 which, as clearly seen in the drawings, serves to continually urge the linkage 12, 14 toward extended position and thus serves to bias the cranks 62 toward upper position and counterbalance the weight of the frame 50.
In order to secure the several frames in their closed or operative positions the following devices are provided. Pivotally mounted upon the vertical portion of the frame I 4 as at 80 is a bell crank 8| havingv a handle 82 at one end and a hook 83 at the other which is adapted to engage the edge of a slot 84 provided in the end of the main frame I 0, when the two frames are in their abutting operative positions as shown in Figure 1. The hook 83 may, of course, be readily released by manipulation of the handle 82 prior to swinging the frame to open position. In order to properly align and retain the frames 50 and I4, a hook 85 is pivoted as at 86 to a portion of the conveyor frame 50 and is adapted to engage a stationary detent 87 secured to the upper portion of the pile supporting frame [4.
Means are also provided for positively supporting the frame 50 when in its open position shown in Figure 4. A depending hook 90 is pivoted to a portion of the press frame ID as at 9| and is provided with a handle 92. The hook is normally disposed as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, but when the lower end block of one of the links 64 rises to its upper position it displaces the hook 90 by contact with its bevelled edge, and then when it passes the end thereof the hook moves beneath the block 95 and serves to positively support the link 64 and thus the raised conveyor frame 58. When it is desired to close the frames the handle 92 is employed to swing the hook from beneath the element 95. Similar hooks may be provided upon both sides of the press if desired.
By means of the present invention, the displacement of the delivery mechanism of printing presses and similar machines may be greatly facilitated and the efficiency of operation increased especially in connection with preparing the form for the printing operation and the inspection, adjustment, and removal thereof at any time.
It is undertsood that various changes and modifications may be made in the embodiment illustrated and described herein without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the following claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. In a printing press or the like, in combination, a main frame, a sheet delivery frame pivoted to said main frame for horizontal swinging movement to and from operative position, a conveyor for transferring printed sheets from said press, a supporting frame for said conveyor pivoted to said main frame for vertical swinging movement to and from operative position, and means operatively connecting said delivery frame and said conveyor frame for causing the latter to move to and from operative position simultaneously with said delivery frame.
2. In a printing press or the like, in combination, a main frame, a sheet delivery frame pivoted to said main frame for horizontal swinging movement to and from operative position, a.
conveyor for transferring printed sheets from said press, a supporting frame for said conveyor pivoted to said main frame for vertical swinging movement to and from operative position, and positive drive means connecting said delivery and conveyor frames for effecting the described movements of one of said frames in response to corresponding movements of the other.
3. In a printing press or the like, in combination, a main frame, a sheet delivery frame pivoted to said main frame for horizontal swinging movement to and from operative position, a conveyor for transferring printed sheets from said press, a supporting frame for said conveyor pivoted to said main frame for vertical swinging movement to and from operative position, and positive drive means connecting said delivery and conveyor frames for effecting the described movements of one of said frames in response to corresponding movements of the other, said last named means comprising a toothed element associated with said delivery frame, a second toothed element meshing with said first toothed element and journalled on said main frame, and linkage means connecting said second toothed element and said conveyor frame.
4. In a printing press or the like, in combination, a main frame, a sheet delivery frame pivoted to said main frame for horizontal swinging movement to and from operative position, a conveyor for transferring printed sheets from said press, a supporting frame for said conveyor pivoted to said main frame for vertical swinging movement to and from operative position, positive drive means connecting said delivery and conveyor frames for effecting the described movements of one of said frames in response to corresponding movements of the other, said last named means comprising a toothed element associated with said delivery frame, a second toothed element meshing with said first toothed element and journalled on said main frame, linkage means connecting said second toothed element and said conveyor frame, and counterbalancing means for assisting the upward swinging movement of said conveyor frame.

press, a supporting frame for said conveyor pivoted to said main frame for vertical swinging movement to and from operative position, positive drive means connecting said delivery and conveyor frames for effecting the described movements of one of said frames in response to corresponding movements of the other, and counterbalancing means for assisting the upward swinging movement of said conveyor frame.

In a printing press or the like, in combination, a main frame, a sheet delivery frame pivoted to said main frame for horizontal swinging movement to and from operative position, a conveyor for transferring printed sheets from said press, a supporting frame for said conveyor pivoted to said main frame for vertical swinging movement to and from operative position, means operatively connecting said delivery frame and said conveyor frame for causing the latter to move to and from operative position simultaneously with said delivery frame, and latch means for normally maintaining said delivery and conveyor frames in operative relation to said main frame.
7. In a printing press or the like, in combination, a main frame, a sheet delivery frame pivoted to said main frame for horizontal swinging movement to and from operative position, a conveyor for transferring printed sheets from said press, a supporting frame for said conveyor pivoted to said main frame for vertical swinging movement to and from operative position, means operatively connecting said delivery frame and said conveyor frame for causing the latter to move to and from operative position simultaneously with said delivery frame, and counterbalanclng means for assisting the upward swinging movement of said conveyor frame.

In a printing press or the like, in combination, a main frame, a sheet delivery frame pivoted to said main frame for horizontal swinging movement to and from operative position, a conveyor for transferring printed sheets from said press, a supporting frame for said conveyor pivoted to said main frame for vertical swinging movement to and from operative position, means operatively connecting said delivery frame and said conveyor frame for causing the latter to move to and from operative positionsimultaneously with said delivery frame, counterbalancing means for assisting the upward swinging movement of said conveyor frame, and latch means for normally maintaining said delivery and conveyor frames in operative relation to said main frame.
9. In a printing press or the like, in combination, a main frame, a sheet pile carrying frame pivoted to said main frame for horizontal swinging movement to and from operative position with relation to the press, a sheet conveyor operatively associated with said press and said pile, and pivotally mounted upon one of said frames for swinging movement to and from operative position for transferring sheets between said press and said pile, and means operatively connecting both of said pivoted frames for insuring their simultaneous movement to and from their respective operative positions.
10. In a printing press of the class described, which comprises, a main press frame, a printing couple thereon comprising an impression cylinder and a horizontally reciprocating form bed; the combination of a sheet pile supporting frame disposed at one end of the main press frame, a conveyor carried by said press frame and normally adapted to occupy a substantially horizontal position wherein it extends above said form bed, a horizontal pivot connecting said conveyor with said press frame and a vertical pivot connecting said pile supporting frame with said press frame, and means operatively connecting said pile frame and said conveyor for simultaneous movement, whereby said conveyor is swung upwardly away from the form bed at the same time that the pile frame is swung laterally from said form bed to provide access to said bed.
11. In a printing press, in combination, a main frame, a sheet delivery frame pivoted to said main frame for horizontal swinging movement to and from operative position, a conveyor for transferring printed sheets from said press, a supporting frame for said conveyor pivoted to said main frame for vertical swinging movement to and from operative position, and positive drive means connecting said delivery and conveyor frames for simultaneous movement, said last named means comprising a vertical pintle shaft to which said delivery fram is fixed, a horizontal shaft having bearings in the press frame, gearing connecting said shafts for simultaneous and proportional rotation, a crank on said horizontal shaft, and a link connecting said crank with said conveyor frame.
