Be it known that I, AMos H. SMITH, acitizen of the United States, residingat the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, county of Kings, and State of-New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Delivery Mechanisms. for Printing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
My invention relates to delivery mechanisms for printing machines, and more particularly to a mechanism particularly adapted for use upon rotary plate machines.
' In plate printing machines of the rotary type, theimprint is made upon dampened sheets of paper, which are pressed, with considerable force, against the plate by the impression cylinder, so that the grippers of the delivery mechanism to remove the sheet, must be inserted between the paper and the plate in order to pick up the forward edge of the paper, without crumpling or mutilating same.
There'has heretofore been devised a gripper mechanism for delivering the sheets from the plate, embodying therein means for lifting the forward edge of the sheet from the plate, so as to facilitate the entry of the grippers between this edge and the plate, but this mechanism necessitated the use of movable members carried by the plate cylinder which had to be coordinated in their functions with the gripper mechanism, requiring great nicety in the adjustment of the various parts.
In a delivery mechanism, a sequence of grippers are used, and in such mechanisms heretofore employed, it has always been necessary to adjust each of the gripper fingers with relation to ea ch particular plate mounted upon the cylinder, no means being provided for compensating for irregularities in the plate, or permitting a variable, or differential actuation. of the different gripper fingers, to c'onformto variations in different portions of the plate.
4 In a delivery mechanism made in accordance with my invention, the gripper fingers are so constructed as to not only readily pass under, and lift the sheet from the plate, but to automatically adjust themselves to irregularities in the surface of the plate, in a manner to insure all of the fingers passing beneath the forward edge of the sheet. In this manner all of the gripper fingers may be forward edge of each sheet as it is to be delivered, I so construct this mechanism as to cause a variable movement of the plate and the gripperswhile the latter are operative to lift the edge of the sheet from the plate, so as to cause a sufficient advance of the sheet with relation to the gripper fingers, to in- .sure the engagement of the sheet between said fingers and thegripping areas cooperating therewith, the movement of said gripper fingers being accelerated during some portion of each revolution thereof, to compensate for the retardation'incidental to the feeding movement of the paper in relation to said fingers, and insure accuracy in the timing of the movement of the gripper mechanism with relation to the plate during the delivery of succeeding sheets.
A delivery mechanism made in accordance with my invention 1s so constructed as to avoid undue wear of the plate by reason of the repeated engagement of the fingers therewith.
The invention consists primarily in a delivery mechanism for printing machines, embodying therein a rotatable member havinga plurality of gripping areas thereon, means actuating said member, a plurality of gripper fingers cooperating with said gripping'areas respectively, said gripper fingers each embodying therein means whereby, with the actuation thereof, each finger will be yieldingly thrust into engagement with the printing plate, and means adapted to impart a timely and simultaneous actuation to said fingers to insure the engagement and disengagement of the fingers with the paper; and in such other novel features of construction and combination of parts, as are cylinder embodying my invention, the gripper fingers being shown in the opened position'in relation to a printing plate;

I have referred to the delivery mechanism as being adapted for use with a rotary plate machine, and have so shown it in the drawings, since this mechanism is particularly adapted to be used with this type of machine. The mechanism maybe used, however, with flat bed machines with merely those modifications incidental to the change in the design of the machine.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, a indicates the plate cylinder of a rotary machine, having a plate a thereon. Associated with said cylinder, beyond the impression cylinder, which is not shown in the drawings, is a shaft I) having mounted thereon a sequence of rings or wheels 0, about which the usual tapes 0 pass, said tapes having associated therewith the parallel tapes 0 The tape arrangement is old and well known in this art, no claim of invention being made thereto.
Carried by some, or all, of the rings or to cooperate with a grippingarea 0 upon the ring carrying same, these gripper fingers receiving timely actuations to insure their engagement with the forward edge of the sheet, after it has passed the impression cylinder, and to release the sheet as it is delivered to the tapes 0 and 0 While any desired mechanism for thus actuating said gripper fingers, may be employed, I prefer to mount all of said fingers upon a shaft (Z mounted adjacent the periphery of the rings or wheels 0, and receiving movement therefrom. This shaft may be rocked to open and close the. fingers by any desired mechanism, such as the cam cZ acting upon the crank arm d carried by said shaft. The cam d has a rise and fall Z adapted to open and close the grippers when picking up the sheet from the plate, and a second rise and fall 6Z adapted to open the grippers, to accomplish the delivery of the sheet to the tapes 0 and 0 and subsequently close them. By this construction, I insure the simultaneous actuation of all of the gripper fingers to the same extent, which is an essential characteristic of the dellvery mechanism. Any
, actuating mechanism which may secure the,
desired effect, could be used, however, in lieu of that shown in the drawings.

Each of the grippers is identical in structure with every other, so that a detailed description of but one of them is essen tial to an understanding of the present invention. These grippers are so constructed as to receive a positive opening and closing movement with the oscillation of the shaft d, and yet have the portion thereof I.

By this construction a slight overthrow of the shaft d can be provided for, the yielding contact of the gripper finger with the plate resulting in this finger adjusting itself to the plate, and not only causing it to follow any slight irregularities in the plate adja'- cent the forward edge of the sheet, but causing all of the" fingers to; positively bear upon the plate and thus assume the same relation thereto. This avoids the necessity several fingers.

The flexibilityof the tongue h supplements the action of the spring 9 in securing a yielding contact between the gripper portion 7 and the plate,'the association of the portion 7 and the tongue h permitting the desired intimacy in the contact of these parts with the plate, with a light pressure thereof upon the plate, in a manner to minimize likelihood of wear of the plate as a result of the repeated enement of these parts therewith.

Since, however, the grippers, in delivering the sheet, move in the same direction as the sheet, it is essential that as the portions 7 and h engage the plate, the movement thereof be either retarded or reversed momentarily, or until the paper has been positioned between the portion 7 and the 00- operating gripping area 0 To secure this result, I provide actuating means for the shaft 6, which, by insuring the desired synchronism between the delivery mechanism and the printing couple, will nevertheless vary the speed of rotation of the shaft b, first to insure the proper picking up of the sheet, and second to compensate for the retardation incidental thereto by an accelerated speed of rotation during a portion of each revolution, subsequent to such retardation.

This gear carries a stud i u on which is mounted a bell crank lever j. ne arm of this lever is connected by the link with a crank arm b. The other arm of the lever j carries a roller 7" seated in the groove of a housed cam m, said cam being non-rotary and having a rise m at one point thereof coinciding with the interval of'the engagement of the gripper fingers with the plate, and a fall m coinciding with the' interval subsefrom the sheet. The portions'of' the cam grooved between said rise and said fall, and between said fall and said rise, are concentric with the axis of the shaft 6. ,The height of the rise m 'is identical with the depth of the fall m so that the direct and returnoscillation of the lever y' will be the same. By this construction the gear 2' may rotate at uniform speed, applying its power to the shaft 6' through a mechanism, to
wit :the lever j and the link is, which is capable, through a suitable controlling mechanism, to vary the speed of rotation of said shaft, independently of said gear.
I have shown in the drawings, and have herein described, only those portions of the printing machine incidental to an understanding of the mode of operation of the deliverymechanism, the details of construction of other mechanisms being immaterial to the present invention.
The operation of the herein described delivery mechanism is substantially as follows v While a machine is in operation, the rings or wheels 0 will rotate in synchronism with the actuation of the printing couple, the number of rotations of said rings or wheels, with each cycle 'of the printing couple, being capable of variation as determined by the number of plates a upon the plate cylinder a. As the gear/i rotates, the stud c" thereon will carry the bell crank lever j about with it, said lever normally having no oscillatory movement upon said stud, since any such movementof said lever is con trolled by the cam m. I
While the lever y" is thus traveling with- .out oscillatory movement, the link Zr will,

any gripper is not so set as to bear properly upon the plate, or if there be a high, or a low, spot on the platev at the point of contact of the gripper therewith, the independent ;movement of the portion f will compensate for this irregularity, and all :grippers of the se uence will bear directly passing beneath, or butting against, the

At the same time, the resiliency of the tongue b will permit this tongue to yield slightly upon contact with the plate, the portion intermediate the end thereof, and the end of 'in a direction opposite to that of the direction of rotation of the shaft 7) and the stud 2', thus causing aretardation, dwell or backward thrust as to the shaft 6, through the crank arm 6. The exact operative effect of this mechanism upon the shaft 7) will be determined by the angle of the rise m, the duration of this operation being controlled by the length of this rise. While said lever is being oscillated, the sheet will have a feeding movement in relation to the grippers.
As the roller 7" reaches the top of the rise m, the oscillatory movement of the lever ceases, and solong as the cam groove re-' 4O mains concentric with the shaft Z), the speed of rotation of said shaft will be the same as that of the gear 1', which speed will be coin- 'cident with the rate of travel ofthe plate.
While the mechanism for retarding the shaft d is operative, or immediately thereafter, the cam cZ actuates the shaft (Z to close the grippers upon'the sheet, the sheet thus being transferred, asit is printed, from the plate a to the collecting mechanism.
As the grippers approach the tapes 0 and c and immediately after the sheetpasses between said tapes, the rise al upon said cam, opens the grippers, and thereafter the travel of the sheet results from that of the said tapes. j After the sheet has been completely printed, and while it is being conveyed by the tapes 0 and 0 the movement of the shaft 6 v is accelerated to compensate for the retardation period, this acceleration resulting from the action of the fall m upon the lever As. the roller j is acted upon by this fall,
I the lever j is oscillated in the opposite direction, or returned to normal. This movement of'the lever j will exert a pull .upon

The mechanism for imparting variable observed, is positive, thus insuring accuracy in the timing ofthese operations. Furthermore, the mechanism is such as to permit variance in. the adj ustment' of the different gripper wheels without affecting the adjustments of this 'mechanism, which are constant. I I
It is not my intention to limit the invention to the precise details of construction shown in the accompanying drawings, it being apparent that such may be varied while yet securing the desired yielding contact of 'the grippers with the plate, to insure allof the grippers being pressed against the plate in a mannerto cause them to conform to the more, other means than that shown and described, may be employed for insuring'that retardation, dwell, or backward thrust of the grippers, for the purpose of permitting a feeding movement of the paper in relation 1 0 to the grippers, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Having described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to have protected by Letters Patent, is v 1. A delivery mechanism for printing machines, embodying therein a rotatablememher having a pluralityof gripping areas thereon associated with the plate cylinder,
I means actuating said member, a plurality of gripper fingers cooperating with said gripping areas respectively, said gripper fingers each embodying thereln means whereby, with the actuation thereof, each finger will be yieldinglyrthrust into engagement with the printing plate, means adapted to impart a timely and simultaneous actuation to said fingers first into engagement with the plate, and then'into engagement with said gripping areas, and subsequently away from said 12 areas to insure the engagement and disengagement thereof with the paper and means varying the relative peripheral speed of said fingers and the plate while said fingers are in engagement therewith.
2. A delivery mechanism for printing machines, embodying therein a rotatable mein her having a plurality of gripping areas thereon associated with the plate cylinder, a plurality of gripper fingers cooperating with said gripping areas respectively, said gripper fingers each embodying therein means whereby, with the actuation thereof,
each finger will be yieldingly thrust into means whereby, during each rotation thereof, the rotary movement of said member will be controlled to permit a feeding movement of the paper in relation to said fingers" while they are in engagement with the plate, and will be accelerated to preserve theoperative relation of said fingers to said plate, as to the succeeding delivery operation. A delivery mechanism for printing machines, embodying therein a rotatable member having a plurality of gripping areas thereon associated with the plate cylinder, means actuating said member, an oscillatory shaft carried by, and rotatable With, said rotatable member, a plurality of gripper fingers mounted upon said shaft, and cooperating with said gripping areas respectively, said gripper fingers each embodying therein means whereby, with the actuation thereof, each finger will be yieldingly thrust into engagement with the printing plate, means adapted to impart a timely actuation to said shaft to first thrust said fingers into engagement with the plate, and then into engagement with said gripping areas, andsubsequently away from said areas to insure the engagement and disengagement ofsaid fingers with the paper and means varying the relative peripheral speed of said fingers and the plate while said fingers are in engage ment therewith.
4. A delivery mechanism for printing machines, embodying therein a rotatable member having a plurality of gripping areas thereon associated with the plate cylinder, means actuating said member, anoscillatory shaft carried by, and rotatable with, said rotatable I member, a plurality of gripper fingers mountedupon said shaft, and cooperating with said gripping areas respectively, said gripper fingers each embodying therein a block carried by, and 'movable with, said shaft, a gripping-portion pivotally mounted in relation to said block, co: operating meanscarried by said block and said gripping portion respectively, whereby said gripping portion and -said block are moved in unison in one direction, and a flexible connection adapted to transmit movement from said block to said portion in the other direction, whereby, with the actuation thereof, each finger will be yieldingly thrustinto engagement with the printing plate, means adapted to impart a timely actuation ,to said shaft to first thrust said gripping portions into engagement with, the plate and then. into engagement with said gripping areas, and subsequently away from said areasto insure the engage ment and disengagement of said fingers'with" the paper and means varyingthe relative peripheral speed of, said' fingers and the plate while said gripping portions'are in engagement therewith. A delivery mechanism for printing Ina-i chines, embodying therein a rotatable omemv ber having a plurality -of. gripping areas thereon associatedwith the plate cylinder, means actuatingsaid member, an oscillatory shaftfcarried by, and rotatable with, said rotatable member, a plurality of gripper fingers mounted uponsaid shaft, and cooper ating with said gripping areas respectively, said gripper fingerseach embodying therein a block carried by, andmovable with, saidshaft, having a stop upon one side of said shaft, and aspring seat upon the opposite side thereof, a portion pivotally mounted in relation to said block, having a heel adapted to cooperate with said stop and a's'pring'seat oppositely disposed to the spring seat upon said block, and a spring mounted between said spring seats, whereby, with the actu: ation thereof, each finger will be yieldingly thrust into engagement with the printing plate, means adapted to impart a timely actuation to said shaft to first thrust said gripping portions into engagement with the plate and then into engagement with said gripping areas, and subsequently away from said areas to insure the engagement and disengagement of said fingers with the paper and means varying the relative peripheral speed of said fingers and the plate while said gripping portions are in engagement therewith.
6. A delivery mechanism for printing machines, embodying therein a rotatableniem her having a plurality of gripping areas thereon associated with the plate cylinder, means actuating said member, an oscillatory shaft carried by, and rotatable with, said rotatable member, a plurality of gripper fingers mounted upon said shaft, and cooperating with said gripping areas respectively, said gripper fingers each embody,- i-ng therein a blockcarried by, and movable with, said shaft, a gripping portion. pivotally mounted in relation to said block, 00- operating meanscarried by said block and said gripping portion respectively, whereby said gripping portion and said block are moved in unison in one direction,'a resilient tongue carried by, and projecting forwardly of, said portion, having theend thereof projected toward theplate, and a flexible connection adapted to transmit movement from said block to said portion in the other direction, whereby, with the actuation thereof, each finger will be yieldingly thrust into engagement with the printing plate, means adapted to impart a timely actuation to said shaft to first thrust said gripping portions intoen'ga'gement with the plate and then into engagement with said gripping areas, and subsequently away from said areas to insure the engagement and disenchines,embodyingtherein a rotatable member having a plurality of gripping areas thereon associated with'the plate cylinder,
means actuating said member, anoscillatory shaft carried by, and rotatable with, said rotatable member, a plurality of gripper fingers mounted "uponsaid shaft, and cooperating with saidgripping areas respectively, said gripper fingers eacli'embodying therein a block carried by, and movable with, said shaft, having a stop upon one side ofsaid shaft, and a spring seat upon the op-v "posite side thereof, a portion pivotally mounted in relation to said block, having a heel adaptedto cooperate with said stop and a spring seat oppositely disposed to the spring seat upon said block, a resilient tongue carried by, and projecting forwardly of, said portion, having the end thereof projecting toward the plate, and a spring mounted between said spring seats, whereby, with the actuation thereof, each finger will be yieldingly thrust into engagement with the printing plate, means adapted to impart a timely actuation to said shaft to first thrust said gripping portions into engagement with'the plate and then into engagement with said gripping areas, and subsequently away from said areas'to insure the engagement and disengagement of said fingers with the paper and means varying the relative peripheral speed of said fingers and the plate while said gripping portions are in engagement therewith.

A delivery mechanism for printing machines, embodyingtherein a rotatable member having a'plurality 'of' gripping areas thereon associated with the plate cylinder, a plurality of gripper fingers cooperating with said gripping areas respectively, said gripper fingers each embodying therein means whereby, with the actuation thereof, each finger will be yieldingly thrust into engagement with the printing plate, means adapted to impart a timely and simultaneous actuation to said fingers to first thrust said fingers into engagement with the plate and then into engagement with said gripping areas, and subsequently away from said gripping areas to insure the engagement and disengagement thereof with the paper, and a mechanism for imparting variable speed'of rotationcto saidrotatable member, embodying therein, a gear rotating at constant speed, in synchonism with the printing couple, a bell crank lever pivotally mounted upon, and rotatable with, said gear, a crank upon said rotatable member, a link connection between one arm of said lever and said crank, and a non-rotatable cam operative upon the other arm of said lever, said cam having a rise and a fall thereon, with the portions thereof between said rise and said fall, concentric with the axis of said rotatable member, whereby, during each rotamember having a plurality of gripping areas thereon associated with the platecylinder, a plurality of gripper fingers coiiperating with said gripping areas respectively, means adapted to impart a timely and simultaneous actuation to said fingers to bring them into engagement with the printing plate and then into engagement with said gripping areas, and subsequently away from said areas to insure their engagement and disengagement with the paper, means operating in synchronism with the printing couple, operative connections between said means and said rotatable member, and a controlling mechanism operative upon said connections to vary the speed of rotation of said rotatable member while said finger is in engagement with the plate, to thereafter impart a feeding movement to the sheet coincident with the speed of the printing couple, and after the said grippers have released the sheet, to accelerate the speed of said rotatable member to compensate for the variance in speed while the grippers are in engagement with the plate.
11. A delivery mechanism for printing machines, embodying therein a rotatable member having a plurality of gripping areas thereon associated with the plate cylinder, a plurality of gripper fingers cooperating with said gripping areas respectively, means adapted to impart a timely and simultaneous actuation to said fingers to bring them into engagement with the printing plate and then into engagement with said gripping areas, and subsequently away from said areas to insure their engagement and disengagement with the paper, means operating in synchronism with the printing couple, positive, non-flexible, pivotal connections between said last named means and said rotatable member, and a controlling mechanism operative upon said connections, whereby, during each rotation of said member, its speed of rotation will be varied to permit a feeding movement of the paper in relation to said fingers, and will be accelerated to preserve the operative relation of said fingers to said plate, as to the succeeding delivery operation.

A delivery mechanism for printing machines, embodying therein a rotatable member having a plurality of gripping areas thereon associated with the plate cylinder, a. plurality of gripper fingers cooperating with said gripping areas respectively, means adapted to impart a timely and simultaneous actuation to said fingers to bring them into engagement with the printing plate and then into engagement with said gripping areas, and subsequently away from said areas to insure their engagement and disengagement with the paper, and a mechanism for imparting variable speed of rotation to said rotatable member, embodying therein a gear rotating at constant speed, in synchronism with the printing couple, a bell crank lever pivotally mounted upon, and rotatable with, said gear, a crank upon said rotatable member, a link connection between one arm of said lever and said crank, and a non-rotatable cam operative upon the other arm of said lever, said cam having a rise and a fall thereon, with the portions thereof between said rise and said fall, concentric with the axis of said rotatable member, whereby, during each rotation of said member, the speed of rotation will be varied to permit a feeding movement of the paper in relation to said fingers, and will be accelerated to preserve the operative relation of said fingers to said plate, as to the succeeding delivery operation.
