UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL J. PRINZLER, OF. INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIG'NOR TO VONNEGUT HARD- WARE COMPANY, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, A CORPORATION OF INDIANA. V
l noon HOLDER.
Application filed August 15, 1924. Serial No. 732,231.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CARL J. IaINznnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Door Holder, of which the followi is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in door holders and it is one of the objects of my invention to provice a door holder particularly ada ated for outside doors which will prevent unwarranted removal of the holder from the door from the outside.
For the purpose of disclosing my invention I have illustrated one embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings in which,
Fig. l is a perspective view of a holder embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan partly in section, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the stop member.
In the embodiment illustrated I provide a. cup member 1 which is adapted, when placed in position, to be countersunk in the door, having its front face open. Secured to the bottom of the cup member is a U shaped spring, the base 2 of which provides means for securing, by rivets 3, the spring in position in the cup and the outer ends of the legs l are contracted to form a pair of snap members. This cup 1 is secured on the rear of a face plate 5 having an opening 6 corresponding to the opening in the front of the cup. The cup is positioned on the rear of the face plate and held against vertical displacement by means of rearwardly extending lugs 7 arranged in pairs at the top and bottom of the cup and formed on the rear of the face. plate. These lugs are spaced apart from top to bottom just sutlicient to accommodate the cup 1. In addition to these lugs there are formed on the roar of the face plate rearwardly extending ears 8, two ears being preferably arranged on each side which telescope the sides of the cup and are adapted to receive securing screwsS) passing through the sides of the cup and into the ears.
The unit thus formed is secured to the door, the cup being counter-sunk in the door by screws which extend fro-m the opposite face of the door. To this end, the face plate, on its rear face, is provided at each corner, with bosses 1O internally screw threaded into which engage the securing screws 11 which are adapted to pass through the door from the opposite face. By this arrangement, where the holder is used on the outside of a door, the face plate not only forms a decorative plate surrounding the spring socket, but is secured in such a manner as to prevent the removal of the cup member from the door by unwarranted persons operating on the exterior of the door when the door is closed.
Adapted to eo-operate with the socket member and the springs secured therein is a holder member which comprises a shank 12 having an arrow head 13 and extending vertically from a base plate 14. This holder, or stop member, is positioned in such a manner that when the door is opened to the point desired, the legs 4 will snap over the arrow head 13 and hold the door against closin The base plate is adapted to be secured to the floor by means of screws 15 passing through openings in the four corners thereof and adapted to socket in expansion bolts 16 which are adapted to be secured in the floor. This stop, or holder member, is usually mounted on a concrete floor and in order to prevent unwarranted removal of the holder member and to help take the jar off the bolts, I provide a downwardly extending pyramidal fin 17 which is seated in an opening in the floor. This fin, when the stop or holder member, is mounted on a concrete floor, is preferably seated in the unset concrete so that when the concrete sets the tin not only will relieve the screws 15 of the ar or shock incident to the opening of the door, but will also prevent unwarranted removal of the holder by unauthorized persons.
I claim as my invention:
1. A door holder comprising a cup arranged to be counter-sunk in a door, a U shaped spring having its legs contracted to form clips and its base secured to the bottom of said cup, mounted within said cup, a face plate for said cup, rearwardly extending lugs on the back of said face plate tele scoping the sides of the cup, securing means extending through the sides of the cup and said lugs for fastening the plate and cup to gether and rearwardly extending screw threaded bosses on the rear face of said plate to receive screws for securing the same in position on the door, said screws being ltlt) inserted from the opposite face of the door.
2. In a door holder, the combination with a spring carrying cup, of a flat face plate for said cup provided with an opening coineiding with the opening of the cup, rearwardly extending ears arranged to telescope the sides of said cup and adapted to receive securing screws extending through said sides and into said ears, said face plate be ing provided with rearwardly extending bosses on the rear face thereof having screw threaded sockets adapted to receive screws inserted in the door from the opposite face thereof.
3. In a door holder, the combination with a spring carrying socket arranged to be mounted on the door, of a holder and stop member having a head arranged to co-operate with the spring of said cup and provided with a base for securing the same to' the floor, said base having on its under side a pyramidal fin arranged to be socketed in the floor and bolts extending through said base for securing the base to the floor.
In Witness whereof, I, CARL J. PRINZLER, have hereunto set my hand at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 13th day of August, A. D. one thousand nine hundred and twenty-four.
C. J. PRINZLER.
