g COMPANY, OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT, A. CORPORA- CAP FOR CONTAINERS.
Application led June 8,V 1923. Serial No. 644,141.
To all wlwm t may concern:
.Be it known that I, OSCAR B. lVnLiinn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Middletown, in the county ,of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented new and Improved. Caps for Containers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to thatclass of devices that arecommonly used in connection with various types of containers, the contents of which have to be replenished at more-or less frequent intervals, and an ob-` ject of my.invention, ,an`iong others, is to provide a cover 4for these containers that shall have a maximum eliiciencyboth as to tightness to prevent' ithe contents of said containers or similar devices from splashing or leaking out through said cover, and as to'means whereby'the mouth of a container Ymay. be opened or closed and the cover may also be locked by a very simple and easy-operation of'a handle. A further object of the invention isto provide a cover that can be easily attached tothe opening of a container 1in common use without the aid of tools to replace the ordinary removable covei-supplied therewith, and so -constructed that it will not necessitate its re-` moval from the container when itis desired to uncover said opening.
One form of device embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in thelosedvpositiou It can bereadily seen that .when the cover.- -is closed the locking lugs 23 will pass- .through the notches 22 and that by a simaccompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a View in vertical section through a .cover embodying .my invention, the -operating handle being shown 1n end view.
Fis taken' at right angles to the point of view of Figure 1, but with the lockplate also shown in full.
Figur showing the cover 1n unlocked and opened position.
It is a well known fact, especially in connection with covers which are removably attached to containers such as are used for automobile gasoline tanks, radiators and the like, that require the frequent removal of the cover for the purpose of filling the container, that it is often forgotten to replace the'cover, which fact being unnoticed at re. 2 is a similar view of the devicel e 3k is a plan view of the device.
quently lost. l/Vith my devicev ashereinater' described this `cannot happen. j
In. the accompanying drawings. tlienu# i i iiieral 7 denotes a ring shaped supporting member having al screw threadedfportion 8 which provides asuitable mea-nsbyrwhieh niy device can be secured tothe threaded' fiange 9,- thaty is commonly .used viii-connection with containers of the character herein mentioned. The numeral 10 vdenotes a seca tion ofone of these containers.
The supporting member v7A has formed 1 thereon ears 11 to which is hinged,l .by a pin 12, 14. This cover plate has a angelwhichv overhangs the edge of the supporting member' an car 13 secured to a cov'er plate 7 and also serves to contain within thecover l plate a washer 16. An operating handlev 17 has an operating Stud 18 projecting through the cover plate and .on which aplate 19 is mounted.
The'end of this stud is squared and riveted as at 20 to secure lthe platef19- thereto and against turning movement thereon. This plate is formed to'provide a locking flange 21 at vits periphery, each half of this flange being separated from the other half by notches 22 shaped to form locking cams as clearly shown in the drawings.
rihe supporting member v7 is provided-with locking lugs23 which serve to enga-ge the locking flange 2l lto lock'thc cover in its ple turn of the operating handle 17 the plate 19 is partially rotated, causing the locking flange 21 to come into contact with the lugs 23 and by a continuation of the turning motion Aon the handle -17 the cam 4flange 22 is passed'under the locking lugs In connection with covers for containers it is desirable to providev a vent for the `interior ,of the container. This I accomplish s 7 and over-'the plate 19, said platethusl serving', inaddition to its other functions,
with my improved device by means of a vent opening 24 in the .cover plate and into the airspace Within the-supporting member hereinbeforev described, asv a baffle plate.
V It will thu's'be seen that by causing the plate 19 to serve'as a baille plate any leakage ofthe contents dueto splashing through i the opening 24 is prevented since the plate .W111i gesaugt .direct ifpassage through the venthole, "This iba e plate lbeing made smaller than the opening in thesupporting f member 7,- a suilicient air space is provided While'a hin e is shown herein as a means for securing t e cover to the support 1n a manner to permit the opening in the supporti to be uncovered, yet I contemplate other means for attaching the cover to the support to attain this same result, and I o 'not therefore'confine my invention to themeans `shown for securing this result.
I claim- A closure comprisingk a supporting member, acover plate, 'a stud rotatable in the cover plate, an apertured boss depending from the cover, plate through which the stud passes, a combined baille and locking platel ofdisk formation interlocked with the lower `end o f thev stud and so retained by the boss on the cover, said baille and locking plate having diametrically opposite cutl away portions with the remaining divided edge of the plate being of cam formation and diametrically opposite lugs onthe supporting member cooperating with the cam formations at the edge of the plate..
