LOCKER.
Application flied. August 20, 1919.
To all whom it muy concern.'
Be it known that l, Vitamina N. VANGE, a citizen o1' the United States, residing in Chicago Heights, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful mproveinent in Lockers, olf which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to lockers and has for its object broadly the provision ot' an improved double door locker, i. e. a locker, the door opening of which is closed by two doors hinged at the two sides and swinging in toward each other into closed position.
A principal object oi the invention is the pro-vision of a double door locker providing a full opening when the doors are open and providing also for the secure fastening oi the doors when in closed position and this without danger of the door edges becoming separated.
Another important object of the invention is the provision of a locker of this character wherein the doors and latching device will automatically arrange themselves in latched condition upon closing oit the doors.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a locker o1" this character provided with a stop against which the edges of the doors may be secured when. the doors are closed1 which st-op will be movable with one of the doors to provide a full opening.
Another object of the inventionl is the provision of a locker in which the parts of the latching or locking mechanism may readily be assembled and the parts may be readily individually replaced should occasion require.
Another important object of the invention is the provision of an improved manipulating device for doors of this character together with effective means for locking the same.
Other objects and advantages et the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preerred embodiment thereof.
Serial No. 318,691.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a front elevation eta locker embodying my present invention;
Fig. 2 is a section taken substantially on the line 2 2 ot Fig. 1; t
Fig. 3 is a section taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. l is a partial rear elevation of the door mechanism;
Fig. 5 is a section taken substantially on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 6 is a section taken substantially on line 6 6 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 7 is a perspective view oi' the keeper provided with the. door manipulating devices.
For the purpose olf illustrating my inven tion I have shown on the drawing a locker comprising a bottom wall 11, side walls 12 and a top wall 13 connected at the front by an angle iron door frame comprising a bottom angle 14, a top angle 15 and side angles 16. These angles are arranged in rectilinear formation, all having flanges arranged in the same vertical plane. The locker is provided with two doors 17 and 1S hinged or pivoted respectively by -hinges 19 to the sides or side members oil this angle iron floor frame. The doors are of proper dimension to permit thein to overlap ywhen in closed position. Each is provided with a flange 21 at the pivot or hinge edge, which is bent in to dispose the same behind the adjacent edge of the door frame as may be seen by comparing Figs. 1 and 2.
Each door is provided with top and bottom end flanges 22 for closing against the top and bottom members of the iframe. The tree edge of the door 18 having the outer overlapping edge is bent into an inturned fiange 23 and the adjacent edge of the companion door is bent inwardly at 24 and then at 25 is bent back into parallelism with the plane oit the body of the door to provide an oiiiset flange 26 behind and extending beyond the iange 23 of the door 18. A. latch bar, in the present instance consisting of an angle iron 27, is slidably mounted upon the inner tace of the door 18 and adjacent its free e'dge. This bar is slotted at its lower end at Q8 with an open-ended slot and at its upper en'd with a key-hole slot 29. Two rivets or pins 31 eXt'end in from the inner face of the door and engage within these slots to guide the latch bar in its movement.
The slots 28 and 29 are provided in the flange or part 32 of the latch bar and this part of the latch bar has full face bearing againstthe door. The other part or flange 33 is provided with a locking lug 34 extending down beneath the lower end of the flange part 32. 'l` his lug is beveled at its rear face at 35 to permit it to slide up over the lower member of the door frame in clos ing and is also slightly beveled at its forward face at 3G for drawing the door against the frame by engagement in a slot 87 formed in the horizontal part of the bottom member. and at an appropriate location. At the top the material of the flange part 33 is cut away, as indicated at` 38, to provide a downwardly extending locking lug 39 spaced from the part 32 of the latch bar. This upper lug 39 is adapted for engagement within a slot 41 'of a keeper l42, which consists of a metal clip or sheet offset at 43 and having a part 44 adapted to lie against the inner face of the vertical flange of the top angle of the frame, a rivet 45 being provided to hold this keeper or clip in place. The body 46 of the keeper is arranged inwardly an appropriate distance for easy engagement by the lug 39 and to permit oveilapping of the door edges as. will be presently described. rlhe lug 39 is beveled similarly to the lug 34, already described, at the bottom of the latch bar.
A manipulating handle or device 51 is positioned on the outer side of the door and this handle has a leg 52 provided with an extension 53 which is disposed through a slot 54`iu the front wall. rfhis extension 53 is also given the form of a latch lug and is fixed by a rivet 55 or otherwise to the outer face of the part 33 of the latch bar so that the two move together, and from certain aspects of the invention may be considered to be a latching device. The lug 55 is provided with a hooked end 56 adapted to be engaged within a cut away recess 5T in the flange part 2G of the door 17.
It will be manifest from the foregoing that the latching device is engaged with the top and bottom of the door frame, i. e. respectively by lugs 39 and 34, and also with the free or swinging edge of the door 17 by latch or lock 56.
The other leg` .58ct the manipulating handle slides on the outside of the door and it is provided with a tail 59 which moves within a staple or keeper 61. The tail 59 is a mere flat extension of the handle and is perforated at 62. The keeper or staple G1 consists of a metal strap bent to U-formation shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7. The eX- tremities of the strap are cut away at 63 to provide lugs 64 adapted to be thrust through a slot 65 provided in the door` 18. These lugs are then oppositely bent down as indicated in Figs. 5 and 6 to prevent the strap or keeper from being pulled out of position. The material of the strap is bulged or bent outwardly to provide protuberances (i6 between and above the lugs. These protuberances provide shoulders (i7 for bearing against the outer face of the door and adapted to clamp the material of the door against the lugs (i4 when said lugs are bent as described.
Two lugs 70 extend respectively between the lugs (S4 on each side of the keeper and aie bent toward each other bringing the ends into toggle relation and spreading or tending to spread the legs of the keeper holding the parts firmly in assembled relation.
The keeper is also perforated at 68 to receive a lock 69. This lock when disposed through the perforations 68 and 62 prevents upward movement of the manipulating device and consequently prevents opening of the door.
1n order that any marring of the finish of the door by the sliding of the tail of the keeper may be confined 'to a space immediately beneath the keeper, I provide a raised rib 71 upon which the manipulating device slides in action.
It will be manifest that the', latch bar acts as a door stop when the doors are closed as well as a lock bar and opening of the doors moves this stop out of position obstructing the full opening into the locker. The latching device7 moreover, not only secures the outer overlapping door edge to hold the doors closed but also insures the permanently closed relation of both of the two overlapping edges.
The latch bar is srliown on the drawing to be provided with a recess 80 in the flange 3Q, this recess being provided for engage ment with the locking bolt. of a rim lock should the provision of such a lock be desirable in particular instances.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understocd from the foregoing description, and c it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the for hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
