A. 'DOMINQUEZ TOILET FLUSHING HANDLE Filed Feb. '7, "1925 I l H INVENTOR HLFO/YJFO DOM/IYQUEZ i 'BYQ ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 1, 1925.
UNITED S'ZATES ALFONSO vDOlVIINQUEZ, OF BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA.
TOILET-FLUSHING HANDLE.
Application filed February 7, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALroNso DOMINQUEZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet- Flushing Handles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved toilet flushing handle.
The handles now in use depend upon the weight of the valve and rod to return them to the normal closed position. The handle mechanism very often binds, due to wear and corrosion, which prevents the valve from seating and thus causes a waste of water.
The object of my invention is to provide a handle which will be positively returned to the closed position by a spring.
A further object of my invention is to provide a handle which is simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
In the drawing in which the preferred form of my invention is illustrated:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view of a toilet box with my handle in position thereon.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of my handle.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary front view of the same.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional View of the push button and guide.
Figure 5 is a front elevation of the lift lever finger.
Referring more particularly to the drawing: the numeral 1 indicates a toilet flush box of a well known construction, from the bottom of which extends an outlet pipe 2. The pipe 2 is closed by the conventional ball valve 3 and a lift rod 4|: is secured to said valve and extends upwardly through a guide 5. The flushing handle 6 includes a bracket 7 which is positioned inside of the box 1, and is secured thereto by a lug 8 extending through the wall of said box and upon which the bolt 9 is screwed. The bolt 9 is screwed tightly against the outer face of the box 1 and thus holds the handle 6 firmly in position. The outer ends of the bracket 7 are bent at an angle to the bracket and form bearings '10 and 11. A lift lever 12 is journaled in the bearings 10 and 11, the end of which aim is bent at an angle as at 13. The rod 1 is secured to the lever 12 and as said lever is rotated, the rod and valve3 are raised which opens the pipe 2.
Serial No. 617,478.
A bore 14 is formed through the lug 8 and a push button stem 15 extends through said bore into the box 1. A spring 16 encircles the stem 15 and is positioned between the bracket 7 and a shoulder 17 on the said stem. The stem 15 is urged outwardly under the pressure of the spring 16. A suitable button head 18 is formed on the outer end of the stem 15. A finger 19 is adjustably mounted on the lever 12 with the lower end thereof straddling the stem 15 and positioned against a shoulder 20 on said stem. The key 21 extends through the stem 15 forwardly of the finger 19 and prevents said finger from rotating off of the stem. The set screw 22 extends through the finger 19 against the lever 12 to hold the finger, in the desired position with relation to the lever.
l/Vhen the stem 15 is pushed inwardly against the tension of the spring 16, the finger 19 is also moved inwardly which causes the lever 12 to rock and raise the valve 3. lVhen the pressure is released from the stem 15 the spring 16 positively returns it to the normal position.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination with a toilet flush box having an outlet pipe and a closure valve in said pipe, of a lift lever journaled in said box, means joining said lever and said valve, a stem adapted to extend into said box, means joining said stem and said lift lever, and spring means whereby said stem is returned to its normal position.
2. The combination with a toilet flush box having an outlet pipe and a closure valve in said pipe, of a lift lever journaled in said box, means joining said lever and said valve, a stem adapted to extend into said box, a finger depending from said lever and straddling said stein, whereby said lever is rotated, and spring means whereby said stem is returned to its normal position.
3. The combination with a toilet flush box having an outlet pipe and a closure valve in said pipe, a bracket secured to said box, a lift lever journaled in said bracket, means joining said lever and said valve, a stem adapted to extend into said box, means joining said stem and said lift lever, and spring means whereby said stem is returned to its normal position.
4:. The combination with a toilet flush box having an outlet pipe and a closure valve in said pipe, a bracket secured to said box, a
lift lever journaled in said bracket, ineans joining said lever and said valve, a lug formed on said bracket whereby said bracket is secured to the box, said lug having a central bore therein, a stem adapted to extend through said bore into thebox, a finger secured to said lever and straddling said stem, and a spring in said bore adapted to urge said stern to its normal extended position.
5. The combination with a toilet flushing box havingan outlet pipe and a closure valve in said pipe, abracket carried by said box, a bell crank lever pivoted to said bracket, means operatively connecting one end of said bell crank lever to said valve, a flushing handle operatively connected to the other end of said bell crank lever and means whereby said handle Will normally be held in such position as to close said valve.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ALFONSO DOMINQUEZ.
