TOLEDO, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
WINDOW-CONTROLLING DEVICE.
Application flied June 19, 1920. Serial No. 390,055.
Window-Controlling Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had'therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to a device for controlling the raising and lowering of windows and more particularly the WlIldOWS of automobiles and other vehicles.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the character referred to, which will permit of a single support, having but one point of attachment to the door of the vehicle, and carries both the arm, lifting the window, and also the counterbalancing spring for the window, together with the operating handle and locking mechanism. The device is particularly adapted for use in connection with the type of windows used in closed automobiles and other vehicles, which windows in opening have a lowering movement.
While the invention will be fully described in the following specification, and
while in its broader aspects it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, I do not wish to be limited to the preferred embodiment thereof, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an inside view of the door of a closed vehicle with my invention applied thereto showing different positions taken by the window lifter arm;
. Figure 2 is a side elevation of the lifter device;
Figure 3 is a to view thereof;
Figure 4 is an inside view of the handle.
In the drawings: A represents a bracket member which is attached to the door of the vehicle. by any suitable means such as the screws B. In said bracket member is journalecl a stub shaft 0, on which is mounted fast the window lifting arm D, cut away at E to permit the installation of springs F. These springs are preferably formed by a continuous wire looped around a fixed pin G on the bracket and extendingoutwardly to a predetermined point, the end portions of the wire forming said springs.
Said sprin are secured by any suitable means as the coped wire H, to a pin I upon the free end of the lifter arm, which pin carries also the window liftin roller J.
Owing to the springs F being anchored that the latter may be shifted either up i.
wardly or downwardly through only a slig manual exertion.
To provide a means for positively holding the window in any position desired, an automatic locking means is provided as follows: Upon the bracket A is formed a circular row of gear teeth K. Upon the stub shaft C is mounted a handle or lever L, preferably extending parallel with the lifter arm and secured thereto in the following manner:
The .lever L is provided with a recess L for receiving a pin M on the stub shaft 0 and a spring N, which abuts against a head M on the pin and against the bottom of the recess L, thus tending to hold the lever against the bracket member. However, to operate and lock the window lifter arm by means of the lever L, it is necessary to further provide the lever with corresponding circular gear teeth L for engagement with the teeth K on the bracket member. As it is necessary to disengage the teeth in order to move the lifter arm, a pivotal connection is established between the lever L and an arm 0 on the stub shaft by means of a pin O, the lever L being sufiiciently cut away at P to provide a housing for the arm 0.
In the construction described, in order to raise or lower the window, it is necessary to first disengage the intermeshing teeth K and L this being accomplished by pulling the handle or lever L outward, said handle swinging upon the pin 0 as a pivot. Then the lever L is rotated in the desired direction which will likewise rotatethe window lifting arm, both being non-rotatabl mounted upon the stub shaft as describe When the window is shifted to the desired position, the lever L is released, and the tenthe entire operating mechanism, including the counterbalancing spring for the window. The advantages derived from this invention are believed self evident, such as, easy attachment, avoidance of complication and the obvious result, a cheaper construction.
While I have described a preferable mechanism adapted to be used with a vehicle door, I do not wish to be limited to any specific construction, arrangements or combination of parts as my construction is capable of numerous modifications and changes without departing from the scope of the invention. Although my invention has been illustrated in connection with a vehicle door it may of course be used in other connections.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a window operating device, a unit assembly comprising a lifter arm, a bracket forming a pivotal support for said arm, a counterbalance spring extending from said arm to said bracket and acting upon said arm in the various positions thereof with approximate uniformity, and means-for. looking the arm to the bracket in various posi tions of adjustment.
2. In a window operating device, the combination with a window lifting arm provided with an elongated opening, of a spring located in the opening of the arm and urging the arm upwardly, an operating means for rocking said window lifting arm and a bracket member-forming a slngle support for said device.
3. In a window operating device, the combination with a window lifting arm and an actuating handle therefor, of a journal member connecting said arm and handle and bracket wherein said journal member is mounted, latch elements respectively carried by said handle and bracket, and a spring urging said handle toward the bracket to normally establish latch engagement between said elements.
4. In a window operating device, the combination with a bracket and a window lifting arm, of a journal member pivotally mounting said arm on said bracket, an actuating handle for said arm having pivotal connection to said journal member,'the axis of said connection being transverse to that of the journal member, latch members respectively carried in opposed relation by the bracket and handle member, and means urging swinging of said handle member at its pivotal connection to said journal member to normally engage said latch elements.
5. In a window operating device, the com bination with a pivotal window lifting arm provided with an elongated opening extending longitudinally thereof and window counterbalancing means extending within the opening.
6. In a window operating device, the combination with a window lifting arm having an elongated opening and a bracket upon which said arm is pivotally mounted, of a window countcrbalancing spring extending withinthe opening.
7. In a window operating device, the combination with a window lifting arm, of a bracket, a shaft mounted in said bracket and carrying said arm, a second arm rotatable with said shaft, a handle for rotating said shaft, said handle being pivoted upon said second mentioned arm, cooperating latch elements carried by said bracket and handle, and means for establishing engagement be tween said latch elements.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
STANLEY IV. NICHOLSON.
