A. R. CLAS WINDOW CONTROL MECHANISM Filed Aug. 15,' 1923 p the windows of closed automobiles and other Patented Apr. 28, 1925.
, UNITED STATES v v 1,535,986 PATENT OFFICE.
ANGELO ROBERT CLAS, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO 'THE TOLEDO AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
' wrnnow-con rnor. MEoHAnIsirf Application filed August 13. 1923. Serial at. 657,059.
, 1 0 all whom, it may concern I Be itknown that I, ANGELO ROBERT Cine; a citizen of the nitcd States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and Stateof Ohio, have invented a new-and useful Window-Control Mechanism, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification. Y This invention relates to window raising and lowering mechanisms, and particularly to those adapted for use in connection with vehicles. p The object of the invention is the rovision of a mechanism of this class wiich is easily and quickly operated to raise or lower anassociated window, is composed of a few parts and is capable of being easily.
and quickly mounted in or removed from a window casing.
' The invention is fully described in the fol lowing specification, and while in its broader aspect it is capable of embodiments in numerous forms, apreferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whicln Figl'l is a fragmentary inner side elevation of a window-casing embodying the invention, with the associated window, which is partly broken away," in partially raised position; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged section lid on the line 33 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a door or window casing, forming a window opening 2 in its top portion and a chamber 3 in its lower portion. The customary cross bar or look board 4- is provided in the door or casing at the inner side of the top portion of the chamber 3, and a glass or other suitable closure member 5 is mounted for vertical movements in the casing to adapt it to enclose the opening 201 to be lowered in the chamber? The control mechanism for the closure member includes a plate 6, which is screwed or otherwise rigidly secured to the inner side of the cross-bar d and carries a pivot.
stud.- 7 on which a sector gear 8 is mounted for free pivotal movements in a plane parallel to the plane of raising and loweringor other suitable support at its outer end. on
which the lowerfedge of the window membcr 5 rests. arm '13 projects from the hub portion ofthe 'gear 8 in opposition to its toothed portion :and is connected by a link 14 to the lever 11 at a point'adjacent to the pivot 10 and-preferably between such pivot and the point of engagement of the .le-' ver with the window member. It is thus evident that any turning movement of the sector gear 8 will be communicated to the lever 11 through the link 14: and effect a raising or lowering of the window member 5, as the case may be. It is important however, that the points of connection of thelink 14 with the arm 13 and lever ll'be the same distance from the pivotal center of one as the other.
The weight of the window member on the a lever 11 is counterbalanced by a coiled contractile spring 15, which is connected at one end to an extended inner, end of the lever and at its other end to a bracket 16 secured to the casing 1 and projecting into the lower a suitable sleeve member 19, and is adapted to receive a control handle (not shown) at its outer end. The pin 20, which secures the pinion 17 to the shaft 18, projects at its ends into a substantially ll-shaped notch 21 in the outer hub end of the pinion, and a coiled compression spring 22 is mounted on the shaft between the sleeve 19 and pinion, and normally forces the pinion outward on the shaft so that the pin seats within the apex portion of the notch 21. A lock finger 23 is fixed to the plate 6 and engages one or more teeth of the pinion 17.,when the pinion is at the limit of its outward movement with respect to the shaft 18. Upon a turning of the shaft 18 in either direction the pin 20 first acts on the inclined sides of the notch 21. to force the pinion inward against the tension ofthe spring 22 and out of locking engagement withthe finger 23 and a continued turning movement of the shaft will then cause the pinion to turntherewnth and impart a turned movement to the sector gear 8. As soon as the shaft 18 is relieved of the turning force the pinion 17 will assume its This shaft projects; through the ence in sizes of the drive pinion 17 and sector gear 18, and that the parts are autO- maticallylocked in any position when the control handle or member is relieved of the turning force. w
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, ar-
rangement or form of the parts, as it is capable of numerous modifications and changes 'withoutdeparting from the spirit of the claim,
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In awindow control "mechanism, a support adapted to be attached to the lock board ,Of'a window casing, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends to said support and normall extending in substantially a horizontal p ane, one end of said lever being adapted operatively to engage an edge of the window,
a spring connected to said leverand adapted to be connected at the opposite end thereof to a stationary point within the casing, a link movably connected to said lever between the Window 'engaging'end and pivot thereof, and interengaging toothed elements on said support and connected to one end of said link whereby actuation of said elements inone direction or the other raises or lowers the window.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
ANGELO ROBERT OLAS.
