IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-COLLAR STAYS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,306, dated October 2?, 1874; application tiled August 8, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. PENFIEn-D, of Reading, in the county of Lyon and State of Kansas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Horse-Collar Stay; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andexact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a front view of my horse-collar stay. Fig. 2 is a side View, and Fig. 3 is a plan View of the same.

This invention has relation to horse-collars; and has for its objects protecting the collar at the bottom from the wear of the breast-straps, and also preventing collars from breaking when used in team-harness, where they open at the top. The nature of my invention consists in a metallic stay, which is secured to the lower part of the rim of the collar in such manner as to form a wearing-shield for the same, and to allow the upper ends of the collar to beopened, as will be hereinafter explained.

In the annexed drawing, A designates a horse-collar, which is constructed in the usual well-known manner 5 and B designates my improved shield or guard, which is made of metal shaped in such manner as to embrace snugly the lower part of the rim A, where the collar is subjected to the greatest wear. The shield B consists of an inner strip, b applied to the inner surface of the bent lower portion of the collar-flange A, between the said flange and the horses neck, a lower strip, b, applied upon the lower bent portion of the said flange, to protect it from the wearingaction of the hames, and a body, a, connecting the two asa shield against the friction of the breast-strap. The ends I) bof these strips, which extend well up on the rim A, are perforated with oblong holes to receive rivets c c, which rivets pass through the said rim, and are headed in countersunk holes, so as not to injure the animal. I use in connection with the rivets, and between the shield and rim A, Washers e e, which have spurs formed on them that enter the rim and keep them in place. The slots in the extensions b b allow the upper ends of the collar to be opened and closed without bending the shield.

I am well aware that it is not new to apply a strengthening-strip to the inside of the lower bent portion of a horse-collar, as shown in theLetters Patent of E. Batwell, No. 137,879, dated April 15, 1873; hence I do not claim such invention.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
