To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANKLIN R. Hoocnoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Horse Collar and Hame, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to combined horse collars and hames, my object being to construct a collar and hame combined that will have a minimum weight, maximum strength, and which shall be composed of two swinging sect-ions so formed, joined, and limited in movement that all pressure shall be removed from the respiratory organs, and which shall conform its movements with those of the horse, thus preventing soreness, &c., caused by rubbing, as is the case when the ordinary collar is used; and the invent-ion consists in certain features of construction hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a plan, and Fig. 2 an end elevation partly in section, of a combined collar and hame con structed in accordance with my invention. 3 and 4 are details hereinafter described.

Like letters indicate like parts in all the figures.

A represents a metallic plate having on its front surface the usual connecting devices for the traces, &c. Two of these plates are pivotally united to form a collar. Each of the plates A not only acts as a foundation for the collar, but as a housing, preventing rain,&c., from injuring the collar, and also as a hame. The wither or top part of the plate is struck up to form any desired hinge-joint, A. The inner concave edges of the plates Aare perforated, as at B, and struck up to form the small roll 0, and the outer cbncave edges are in a like manner perforated. The rear side, D, is padded, as is usual, with hair or other material, and is covered by leather, the edges of which are united to the plates by stitches or otherwise passing through the perforations in the plate and through the leather. The lower ends of the plates are cut away, as at E, struck up and bent over, as at F, thus forming one member of a hinge-joint. A link, bridge, or

connecting-piece G is pivotally secured to the plates by the piutles or pivots G thus forming a hinge-joint. The link, bridge, or connecting-piece is cut away near each. end, leav iug a projecting lug or stop, G against which the parts E of the plates come in contact when they are swung backward a certain distance as they partake separately and successively of the natural movements of the shoulders of the horse. Outside of the parts E are the lugs G the distance between which and the lug or stop G is such as to allow sufficient play of the parts E between the lugs, necessary in the movement of the collar with the movement of the shoulders of thehorse. tion pressure upon the respiratory organs and chafing of the shoulders are prevented, and these advantages result in capabilities of drawing heavy loads and accelerating speed with greater comfort.

It is readily apparent that each plate may be cut from suitable sheet metal, and struck up or formed in dies as well as perforated at its edges, whereby cheapness of manufacture and lightness and strength in the completed article are secured.

To facilitate putting on or taking off the collar either of the bolts or piutles of the pivot or l1inge-j oints may be made removable but as the said bolts or piutles are arranged vertically to permit the independent swinging movement of each half of the collar a forward movement of both will, by reason of the projecting portions E, enlarge the opening between the two halves so that the collar will pass over a horses head.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is y 1. A horse collar and. hame combined, the upper ends of the leaves or halves of which are joined by a vertical pivot, and the lower ends of which are joined by vertical pivots lo cated in forward extensions of said leaves or halves, whereby the collar may be enlarged for putting the same upon a horse, substantially as specified. 1

2. In a horse-collar in which the ends are joined by vertical pivots, the forward extensions E F, in combination with the link G, substantially as specified.

3. The metallic plates A, struck. up, as at By this construo- I C, and having the perforations B, with the link G, having the projections G G substantially as specified.

4. The plates A, struck up, as at F and E, to form hinge-joints, in combination with the bridge-piece G, having the raised portion G, and recessed portions G substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

5. The sheet-metal plate A, curled on its concave side, as at O, and perforated at opposite edges, as B, and having the hinged members A F, the latter formed on an extension, E, projecting from the body of the plate, substantially as shown and described.

6. The combined collar and hame compris- I5 ing the plates A, each having a pad, D, secured by stitches at the perforated edges of the plates, the hinged connections A, F, and G, the latter having the stop G substantially as shown and described.
