I Nov. 17,1925
G. DECHEFF FILE HOLDER Filed Jan. 3;, 1 925 X a flee/g7 I I 3 Patented Nov. 17, 1925.
UNITED "STA TES PATENT-OFFICE.

FILE HOLDER;
Application filed January 31, 1925. Serial No. 6,114.
ments in file holders and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in the sharpening of saws and it is an object of the invention to provide a holder with novel and improved means whereby the file may be effectively held thereby and in a manner to permit the desired reciprocation of the file to effect the desired working op eration. i Y
' Another object of the vide a holder of this general character embodying novel and improved means whereby the file' may be turned to adjust the faces thereof as may be required by the necessities of practice. i j
' L 1 additional object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character having means whereby the longitudinal axis of the file may be adjusted to various angles to facilitatethe filing or sharpening of the teeth of a saw.
' The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and ar rangement of the several parts of my im:
proved file holder whereby certain important constructed in accordance with an embodi ment of my invention and in applied position' Ffgure 2 is a view partly in section and partly in side elevation of the device as illustrated in Figure 1;
invention is to proigure 3 is a bottom planview of the de vice as hereln disclosed unapplled;
Figure l is a sectional view taken substan- 1 tially on the line 44: of Figure 1.
[is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, I-Idenotes a handle member of desired configuration and dimensions and which is provided at one end with the elongated socket 1 the inner portion ofwhicli having in communication therewith a relatively large opening 2. Substantially snugly fitting within the socket 1 and entirely con- I fined therein is a sleeve 3, the outer portion of which having its side walls slotted, as at 4 ,.so that said slotted end portion, may be contracted or expanded. The outer extremity ofithe sleeve 3 is also formed, as at 5, into substantially a'triangular shape inorder to snugly engage thebutt end portion ofthe file F. This file F is of the conventional type employed in the filing or sharpening of saw teeth.
Threaded through the sleeve adjacent the inner end portions of the slots 4 is a screw A, said screw also extending outwardly through the opening Qand provided with the wing. head 6. After the butt end ofthe file F has close and tight contact with said butt end ofvthe fileand thereby effectively maintain the same in applied position.
When it is,
desired to turn the file F to adjust the angle I of a file face it is only necessary to rotate the sleeve'3 which may be readily done by exerting sufficient pressure upon the head 6.
of the screw A; The end of the handle H provided with the socket 1 constitutes the inner end and surrounding said-inner pori tion is a ferrule7 provided with an outs/sand ing lug 8 through which is disposed a pair of parallel openings 9. Disposed through the openings 9 are the freeend portions of i the parallel membersiO of a rod B, said inserted end portions of the members 10 be ing locked in a well known manner by thej binding screws 11. The parallel members 10 are of a desired length and have their outer end portions connected by the intermediate.
member 12 constituting a part of the rod B, said member'12 being disposed downwardly on a predetermined curvature to provide an inwardly disposed support for the outer end portion of the applied file, said free end of said portion or support 12 being provided with a recess 14 to receive the outer end of the file. Upon loosening the screws 11 the rod B may be readily moved lengthwise to effect the desired engagement with the outer end of the file F after the butt end portion of such file has been properly positioned within the sleeve 8.
The parallel members 10 of the rod R are also freely disposed through a block 15 provided at one end portion with a depending flange 16. This flange 16 has an opening 1.7 through which thefile F is freely direct ed. This flange 16. constitutes a gauge for limiting the extent of movement of the file with respect to the saw or other work, said flange contacting with the base B of a saw holding frame or other surface.
The block 15 is adapted to underlie a plate 1.8 of. requisite dimensions and configuration, said plate 18 carrying a sleeve 19 adapted to be slidably mounted on a rod 20 of a saw clamp or the like but more particularly the rod of an apparatus described and claimed in my other application for patent executed on even date herewith. This sleeve 19 carries a spring latch 21 adapted to selectively engage within the notches 22 provided in the rod 201 tohold the plate 18 in a fixed position with respect thereto. The latch 21 is disengaged from a notch 22 by the lever 23, said lever '23 having an intermediate ofiset portion 24L through which the latch 21 is directed.
The block 15 has one end portion thereof pivotally connected with the plate 18 by the screw 25 or the like, while the opposite end portion of the block 15 carries a clamping screw '26 which is disposed through an arouate slot 27 in the plate 18. By this means,
the block 1 5 may be swung about its pivotal connection 25 to p'osi tionfth'e longitudinal axis of the I file F to a desired angle "sueh ng i-hg' m t iied r gh e in e damping screw ae.
Vvi th a file holder as hereinbef ore described, it, will be readily understood that the file F may be conveniently applied or removed as required and when in applied position can be effectively reoiprocated to properly file or sharpen a saw tooth. It is also to be noted that a face ofthe filemay be adjusted in accordance with the character of the tooth to be filed or sharpened as is also.v true with respect to the-angle in which is disposed the longitudinal axis of the file F.
' Asa particular structure is described and illustrated in my other application herein-. before referred to it is not believed necessary thatfa detailed description be herein given as tot-he particular apparatus with which my holder is adapted to be employed.
From the foregoing description it 'is thought to be obvious that a file holder const-ructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will aslo be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification with- Out departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. A file holder comprising, in combination,
'a handle member provided with a socket, a
sleeve fitting within said socket and having its outer end portion slotted, a screw threadedthrough the slotted portion of the sleeve to contract and expand said slotted portion,
said sleeve being adapted to receivev an end portion of a file; andmeans carried by the handle member to engage and support the outer end portion of the applied file said means comprising two rod members disposed longitudinally of the handle member and in parallelism to each other, the outer end portions of the rods being connected by an inwardly extending and downwardly disposed intermediate member adapted to receive the outer end of the file, theinner ends of the rods being adj ustably secured to openings in th h dl ber.

4. A file holder comprising, in combination, a handle member provided with a socket, a sleeve fitting within said socket and having its outer end portion slotted, a screw threaded through the slotted portion of the sleeve to contract or expand said slotted portion, the inserted end portion of said screw contacting with the wall of the socket to provide means for holding the sleeve in a fixed position within the socket, said sleeve being adapted to receive an end portion of a V file, and means carried by the handle memher to engage and support the outer end portion of the applied file, said sleeve having rotary movement within the socket, the screw threaded through the sleeve providing means for turning the sleeve, said handle member having an opening in communiciv ti-on with the socket through which the screw extends, said opening permitting the screw to impart rotary movement to the sleeve and to move the sleeve lengthwise of the handle member.
5. A file holder comprising, in combination, a handle member, means for eonneEting an end portion of a file to said handle member, a rod, means for detachably connecting said rOd to the handle member, said rod extending in advance of the handle member and provided with an inwardly disposed support for the outer end portion of the file, a block with which the rod is slid-- ably engaged, and a flange depending from the block to provide a gauge, said gauge having an opening through which the file is freely disposed.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
