IMPROVEMENT IN MILKING-STOOLS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 156,222, dated October 27, 1874; application tiled March 30, 1874.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, NEHEMLAH E. HINDs, of Cooperstown, in thecounty of Otsego and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milking-Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

llhe invention relates to a milking-chair; and consists of a chair having-a semicircular section removed from the front end of its seat, which is faced by a metal plate. Below the seat, and to the inside of the legs of the chair are secured bars having opposite and parallel ways, in which move guides secured to the sides of a sliding platform, having a bowed spring on its under side operating against a round of the chair. The inner corners of the curve in the seat of the chair are provided with apertures in which may be placed the extremities of a metal arched piece having straight ends and a curve conforming to that of the opening in the chair-bottom.

The object of the invention is to furnish a convenient form of milking-chair.

A in the accompanying drawings is the seat of a chair, of proper height, the front of which has a semicircular opening, a, about which is placed upon and iiush with the seat the metal plate B, below the inner corners of which are provided the apertures b. Below the seat A and secured upon the inner sides of the legs d are placed the bars D, having on their inner surfaces the opposite and parallel ways @,in which move the guides h upon the edges of the plates E, which are secured to the under side of the platform F on each side and partly under the front thereof. The

platform Fis of proper dimensions, is rounded on its front edge, and at the longitudinal center of its under side is provided with the plate t', to which is attached the spring H, secured at each end to the-plate and bowed downward, so as to engage the front round as the platform is drawn forward. The platform is lfurther furnished with the stud l, to prevent its being drawn too farforward. I is a piece of metal, having its center an arch or curve of about the same radius as the opening a, and of such dimensions that its ends, which are straight, will fit snugly into the apertures b in the front of the chair-seat A.

The operation is as follows: When the device is to be used the pan or bucket is placed upon the front of the platform and the chair placed so that the bucket is close to the udder of the cow. One leg of the milker is placed over each plate B and the operation of mill@ ing proceeded with. The ends of the piece I being inserted in the slots b,a vessel of suitable size may be placed in' the circle thus formed.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
