Description

H; SCHNAUTZ. Flue-Cleaning Apparatus.
No156178 Patented0ct.20,1874.
'FIG. Z.
HEINRIH SOHNAUTZ, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLUE-CLEANING APPARATUS;
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 156,178, dated October 20, 1874; application filed August 28, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HEINRIH SCHNAUTZ, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Flue-Cleaning Apparatus, of which the following is a specification:
My invention is designed as a permanent attachment or fixture for fiues, chimneys, and smoke-pipes, the same being in the form of ring or annulus of corresponding contour to the flue in its internal section, said ring being made capable of being advanced or drawn along the flue, and retracted in the same Way, so as to scrape off any soot that may be collected upon the walls of the passage.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stove-pipe embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of an ordinary brick chimney with my scraping attachment.
A represents a stove-pipe. B represents a a portion of a common chimney. 0 represents my scraper in its most complete form--that is to say, composed of segments 0, hinged or pivoted to each other at 0 so as to constitute a flexible ring. From the upper and under sides of one of these segments project tongues D D, with which are engaged the two extremities of a chain, E, which is rove around sheaves F F within the flue. Of these sheaves, one
may be adjustable longitudinally to the chain so as to enable the maintaining of it on the stretch. The shaft G of the lower sheave extends to the outside of the flue or chimney and terminates in a crank, H, wherewith to rotate the sheave, and thereby draw the scraper along the smoke-passage. An orifice, I, in the scraper permits the motion of the returning side of the chain without detention by the oppositely-moving scraper.
By constructing the scraper in jointed segments, as shown, I enable it to adapt itself to any irregularities of the smoke-passage.
' In Fig. 2 is shown a rigid scraperadapted to a rectangular flue, the other portions being the same as in Fig. 1.
I claim as new and of my invention 1. The annular scraper O, constructed with tongues D D, in combination with the operating-chain E, sheaves F F, and crank H, operating as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The scraper 0, having hinged segments 0 c and the orifice I for the returning chain, in combination with chain E, rove around sheaves F F, rigidly attached to said scraper by tongues D D, and operated by a crank, H, in the manner set forth, for the purpose designated.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
HEINRIH SOHNAUTZ.
