JESSE E. MCROBERTS, OF WOONSOCKET, SOUTH DAKOTA.
ASH-PAN CLEANER.
I To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, Jnssn E. MoRoBERTs, a citizen of the United States of America,
elevation of the same. longitud nal sectlonal view of the same.
residing at lVoonsocket, in the county of Sanborn and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ash-Pan Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
- This invention is an improved ash pan cleaner forthe ash pans of locomotive and other steam boiler furnaces, to enable the same to be readily cleaned without the necessity of getting under the same, and the said invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices herein after described and claimed.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 1s a horizontal sectional v1ew of a boiler furnace ash pan prov ded with a cleanmg mechanism embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 1s a vertlcal transverse sectlonal view of the same taken on the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side Fig. l is a vertical Figs. 5 and 6 are detail perspective views of the chain links to which the ends of the flight bars are connected.
The ash -pan 1, which may be of the construction here shown or of any suitable construction, is provided with a bottom plate 2 and withupwardly opening hinged end doors 3 whiohmay be ra1sed or lowered at willQ: Secured to the side walls of the said side portions of the bottom plate.
ash Ipan, at a suitable distance from the angle irons 5.
At the ends of the ash pan, below the bottom thereof, are downwardly extending brackets 6 which are provided with bearings 7 for shafts 8; Each ofthe said shafts is provided near its ends with sprocket wheels 9. 'One of the said shafts is further provided at one end -with a worm gear 10. Brackets 11 are secured to the outer side of the side walls of the pan and depend therefrom to a suitable distance below the bottom plate 2, said brackets supporting a pair of longitudinally disposed shoe bars 12. On I oneside of theash pan, at one of the lower corners thereof, is secured a plate 13 which Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 26, 1907.

Serial No. 385,735.
is provided with bearings 14 for an inclined shaft 15. Said shaft has a handle or lever 16 at its outer end whereby it may be rotated and is provided near its inner end with a worm 17 which engages the gear so that when the said shaft is turned, the shaft 8, which is geared thereto, is also rotated.
The sprocket wheels 9 of the respective shafts 8 are connected by endless chains 18. The upper leads of the said chains extend longitudinally of the ash pan and bear on the bottom. plate thereof under the shoe bars 4-. The lower leads of such chains travel upon the shoe bars 12. The said chains are connected together by transversely disposed flight bars 19. Each of the said flight bars has its ends secured to brackets 20 with which certain of the links of the chains are provided. The said chains are preferably of the usual detachable link construction so that any suitable number of the flight bars may be connected thereto and the said flight bars may be disposed at any desired distance apart.
The operation of my invention is as follows: Ordinarily the doors are closed. When it is desired to discharge ashes from the bottom plate of the ash pan, such doors are first opened to a suitable extent to permit the flight bars of the endless chains to pass under them, the shaft 15 is then turned so as to impart motion to the shafts 8 and flight bars, and as the latter move on the bottom plate, they serve to carry the ashes therefrom and to discharge the ashes from one end of the ash pan. The shoe bars 4 bear on the flight bars of the upper leads of the chains and keep such flight bars in contact with the upper surface of the bottom plate and are prevented from passing over the ashes.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is An ash pan of the class described having a bottom plate, side walls and end doors, shafts disposed transversely of the ash pan and having bearings under the ends thereof, such bearings being secured to and carried by the bottom plate, such shafts having sprocket wheels and one of such shafts also having a gear wheel, endless chains connecting such sprocket wheels, having their upper leads disposed to travel lengthwise on the upper side of the bottom plate of the ash pan and their lower leads below such hot tom plate, flight elements connecting the from the sides of the ash pan and shoe bars endless chains, a worm shaft having the 1 attached to said brackets, disposed on the worm thereof disposed in engagement With lower leads of said chains. such gear Wheel and having its bearings se- .ln testimony whereof, I atfix my signature 5 cured directly to one of such side Walls, I in presence of two Witnesses.
an 'le irons on the inner surfaces of the side a 1 wa lls shoe bars at the sides of the ash pan JEbbE MOROBERI disposed above the upper leads of the said endless chains and attached to such angle 10 irons, brackets secured to and depending ll'itnesses C. J. JAGKMAN,
