ASH-PIT BUMPER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. MOCALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of Newcastle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Pit Dumpers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an ash-pit dumper of that class employed on locomotives, and the invention relates more particularly to the novel mechanism for operating the hinged bottom of the ash-pit, although the same mechanism may be employed for operating the hinged bottom of coal cars and the like.
Most railroad locomotives have a stationary bottom to their ash-pits and the ashes are removed through an ash-pit door in the end, but a few types employ a loose bottom hinged to the sides in two sections, and which are opened and closed by a series of shafts and levers which are not only complicated, but become useless by the varying of the parts caused by the excessive heat and the drips of water from the injection pipes which are generally located in the ash-pit.
The object of the present invention is to simplify the mechanism employed, and provide a device which shall be cheap, simple, durable, and be quickly renewed when warped.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which shall be easily operated and positive in its action.
lVith these and other objects in view my invention consists in certain construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed in the annexed specification and illustrated in the is a rear end elevation of the same. Fig. 3, is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 4, is a rear end elevation, showing a modified form of connecting link which is capable of adjustment to compensate for' the wear or warpage of the bottom plates; Fig. 5, is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 6, is a detail View of said adjustable connecting link.
Referring to the drawings, the device comprises in connection with an ash-pit 10, having a two part swinging or operating bottom 11, of arms 12, upon which said bottom plates 11, are mounted. Said arms 12, are formed with squared eyes 13, which are se cured upon a squared shaft 14, which is provided with round bearings 15, and mounted in bearing brackets 16, secured to the sides of the ash-pit adjacent to the lower edge. Upon the ends of said shafts 14, are secured lever arms 17; one standing up, and the one on the opposite side standing down; while their ends are joined by the connecting link 18. One of said shafts 14, is extended at its rear end and has secured thereon a bent hand lever 19; the outer end of which extends out through a keeper and guide block 20, which is so mounted upon the wall of the ash-pit, and which is provided with a series of holes 21, within which is placed a locking pin 22, for retaining the outer end of said lever 19, in a lowered position, and thus retaining the bottom plates 11, closed. When the locking pin 22, is removed, the hand lever 19, will raise, and by the action of the links 18, and arms 17, the bottom plates 11, are swung open, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, which allows the contents of the ash-pit to be dumped. The bearing brackets 16, are U-shaped, and the shafts14, are held therein by the retaining bolts 23; by the removal of which the shafts 14, with the arms 12, and bottom plates 11, may be lifted out and removed. As shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6, of the drawing, the connecting link may be formed of two parts 24, and 25, which are formed with bifurcated ends 26, for attachment to the lever arms 17 by the bolts 27. The inner ends of said link members are provided with right and left handed screwthreads 28, so that said link members may be joined together in an adjustable manner by a turn buckle 29, and in this manner the length of said link may be varied to compensate for the warping of the bottom members, so that a tight fit may always be assured.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A dumping mechanism for locomotive ashpits, comprising in combination with the ash-pit walls, of bearing brackets secured to said walls, shafts mounted in said brackets, arms rigidly secured upon said shafts, bottom plates carried by said arms, levers rigidly secured upon the ends of said shafts, the levers on one shaft standing upward and on the other shaft downward, adjustable links connecting the ends of said levers, said links formed in two parts and means for adjusting the length of said links, a hand-operated lever secured to the rear end of one of said shafts for operating the same, and means for retaining said hand lever in a lowered position for closing said bottom plates.
