AppIica-tion Vfiled-f3'antler-y1I9; 1921, 4Serial No. 438;@16'. ReneWedVAprl 13,` 1.925.
To all unioni it muy cof/roeien:
it known thatl'I, Annuler Permit, 2id-,Li a citizen of the United)y States, residing at New Yerlr, in-the county of IYew York andA Stateof New Yorlc, have invented"certain` new and useful Improvements in' Identiii-- cation Name Plates for Umbrellas, of which the: following. is al specilicat-ion. i
This invention relates` to means for associating with` an,V umbrella, parasol'` orithe like, `aholden for an addressr ori identification card, insuch i al mannerA andlinl such-l a position that the card wiltbefsubstantially hidden` 1 fromf. Lvi'ew in'. ordinaryy conditions' of use.
A further object-` is to provideff'or thee eqr'iipment"of! air-"umbrella or the lill'riewith an identification or addresscard by means att-achabl'e to `or forming-la partJ of an element of the umbrella which.4 is!` concealed when the umbrella is closed? and which isleX- posedH to view from'beneatl'ii the umbrella wheny the i latter is openedt Other objects and-aims offl the invention, more orf less!` broadV than-those stated above,` together' witlli the. advantages inherent, will be in part obvious and in part specifically referred to incthe coursel of the following description of the` elements, combinations, arrangements of parts, and applications of principles constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will appear from the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which are to be taken as part of this specification, and in which I have shown merely a preferred form of embodiment of invention, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a part of an open umbrella showing my identification card holder combined with a stay or brace of the umbrella: Figure 2 illustrates in perspective a separable support for an identification card, which support is adapted to be frictionally held by and within a stay or brace of familiar' construction; Figure 3 is a sectional view through a channeled brace or stay, showing in end elevation an identification card holder detachably and releasably held in position on the stay; Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the subject-'matter of Figure 3; Figure 5 is a vie-w illustrating a modified means for holding an identification card support in position on a stay; and Figure 6 is a side elevation illustrating the subjectmatter of Figure 5.
at flitheicentrailrod of anA umbrella, havinga cover 9', rib 10,stay or brace 11,V all of these partsbeiirg connected together in the usualwayl7 and-the brace 11? being pivoted at oneV end to. the rib 10 and? at the other end to a slide 12, which moves up and down on the central@ rod 8h Ier-Figure 2I have shownla detachable card-holder`- made up from sheet meta-hand comprising` a slideway 19- with ai card`16' thereinandan integral Pr'ibl or 20 extend@ 'lh-ising' along the bottomof the `l`rol`d'er.- fin will be of' such width that1 it` may be forced into -the channel ofthe braceorlstay, where it--will behelfdlby friction, assuming that the interengaging p'a-rtsfare of proper relative size, ttc. In this iigure, also, I show the slideway for the card` closed at4 both ends by end-pieces 18. The ends of the card are inserted/under these stops and the card flattened down into proper position. And for the ready removal of the card-I may provi-de acut-out 28in one of the `side wal-lsv of the slideway, throfugli whichjthe edge ofthe cardis accessible for lifting "it up. Thisarrangement may also be used; with `the cardholders shown in `the other figures.
In Figures 5 and 6 I show a construction in'which reliance is not placed on the frictional hold, but clamp members 21 surround and bear against both the holder and the stay, the clamp members being held together by means of screw and nut connection 22.
In Figures 3 and 4 I show still another arrangement, whereby the card holder may be held in position on the stay and readily removed therefrom when desired. In this embodiment the card holder, indicated in a general way at 19 and including the sort of sli-deway heretofore described, carries below it a clamp 24, which is pivoted at 25, and urged by means of a spring 26, to the Figure 3 position. This form of the device is useful in connection with the stays of different sizes, as will be obvious; and in order to prevent rotation of the device about the stay, I may provide a lug 27 on the bottom of the card holder which enters the channel of the stay, in somewhat the same way as the fin 2O shown in Figure 2.
Inasmuch as the stays 11 are ordinarily positioned so that the channels thereof open downwardly when the umbrella is open and held over the person, it will be obvious that when a card holder such as l have described is in position on the stay, the card will be visible and readable to the person holding the umbrella. And obviously it will be normally invisible to other persons when the umbrella is open and will at all times be hidden from view when the umbrella is closed. The arrangement shows distinct advantages over the methods heretofore employed of fastening a name plate or the like to the handle of an umbrella. This was dilicult because the dilerent shapes of handles are innumerable and a standard vname plate is practically impossible. Furthermore, many persons object on aesthetic grounds to having their names and addresses published in such a way. The rib of an umbrella would not serve so well as a support for the card holder because in opening the umbrella itis bowed. And the central rod will not serve, because the slide l2 moves up and down on it. And the slide itself is not large enough to carry a card.
Inasmuch as many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparent widely dierent embodiments of my invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all the generic and speciiic features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
l claim:
l. The combination with a channel brace or stay of an umbrella, of an elongated card holder comprising a slideway for a card and a fin or rib on said holder for engagement within the channel of the brace.
2. The combination with a channel brace or stay of an umbrella, of an elongated card holder comprising a slideway for a card and a fin or rib on said holder for engagement within the channel ofthe brace, and means for clamping the holder in position on the brace.
8. The combination with a channel brace or stay of an umbrella, of an elongated card holder comprising a slideway for a card and a lin or rib for engagement within the channel of the brace, and spring-pressed means for releasably securing the holder in position on the brace.
4. The combination with a channel brace or stay of an umbrella, of an elongated card holder comprising a slideway for a card and a lin or rib on said holder for engagement within the channel of the brace, and means for releasably securing the holder in position on the brace.
5. The combination with a channel brace or stay of an umbrella, of an elongated card holder comprising a slideway for a card and provided with an integral tin or rib on its rear face for insertion within the channel of the brace to hold the card holder in position on the brace.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature.
