IMPROVEMENT IN BRAlD-GUIDES FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,l54, dated October 20, 1874; application filed August 26, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER GULL- MANN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Braid-Guides for Sewing- Machines, of which the following is a specification.

This invention consists in combining, with the throatplate of a sewingmachine, two jaws, which turn on a common pivot, so that they can be opened or closed to correspond to the width of the braid passing through betwt en them, the shanks of said jaws being provided with cam-slots and recesses to engage with a cam or button, by turning which the jaws can be readily opened or closed, and the guides can be adjusted for braids of various widths, said button and cam slots being shaped as hereinafter described, so that the jaws are locked in any position in which they may be brought.

This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents aplan or top view. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan, partly in section, the line w 00, Fig. 4, indicating the plane of section. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same, the line y y, Fig. 4, indicating the plane of section. Fig. 4 is a vertical section in the plane 2 2, Fig. 1. Figs. 5 and 6 are detached views of the two jaws, which constitute my braid-guide.

In the drawing, the letter A designates the throat-plate of a sewing-machine, which is provided with an aperture, to, for the feed-dog, and with a throat, b, for the needle. With this throat-plate are combined two jaws, c d, which swing on a common pivot, e, and one of which is provided with lips f, (see Fig. 5,) which extend over the other jaw, so as to form a channel, through which the braid can be fed to and under the needle of the sewing-machine. The jaw c, Fig. 5, consists of two arms, one of which is secured to the pivot 6 above the throat-plate, while the other arm, 0*, is fastened to said pivot beneath the throat-plate, and at such a distance from the same that room is left for the arm d Figs. 4 and 6, of the jaw 01. In the ends of the arms 0* and 61* of the jaws c and d are formed eyes 9 h, Figs. 5 and 6, which are provided with recesses ij, to engage with pins .k Z, which project from the head of a button,

in, on opposite sides of the center of said button, so that by turning said button the jaws 0 and d are opened or closed, and by the button the said jaws are locked in any position into which they may be brought. The button m is provided with two heads, one above and the other below, so that it can be turned from either end.

By turning the button at the jaws c d are opened or closed, and the guide is readily adjusted for braids of different widths, and I am enabled to sew a braid of any desired width to the under side of any fabric as the same passes through the sewing-machine.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The jaw 0, having an arm, 0*, and a lip,f, and jaw d, having an arm, d each of said jaws provided with eyes 9 h and recesses '6 j, in combination with a button or cam, on, having pins k Z, and the throat-plate of a sewing-machine, substantially as described.
