CHECK PROTECTOR.
Application filed July 9, 1925.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN EVANS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Melville Station, in the county of Newport and State of Rhode Island, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Check Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates generally to check protectors of the type described and claimed in my Patent 1,182,001, granted May 9, 1916, and with respect to which my present invention proposes certain improvements permitting of more ready application and effective use of the implement without impairing its adaptability to ready transportation in the pocket or any other small storage spaces.
A further object of my present invention is to provide a small neat compact device in which the impression members are carried by the side portions of a frame permitting of movement of the impression members toward and away from one another, means being included for normally holding the impression members in spaced apart relation' and other means being employed for forcing the same toward and into engagement with one another with ample pressure brought about by mere hand manipulation, to cause the serrated opposing faces of the impression members to indent that portion of a check disposed between the impression members.
A still further object is the provision of a device of the above character in which the impression members are elongated and so connected to the adjacent ortions of the frame that their direction 0 greatest length may be positioned either parallel with or transversely of the frame, in order that the device may be utilized with equal convenience and effectiveness upon check forms of different characters.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates my present invention and forms part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the practical application of my invention;

Referring now to these figures, my invention proposes a check protector including a ll shaped frame 10, which maybe formed .in two sections connected by a hinge 11 as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, or which may be formed of a single piece of metal, as shown in Fig. 44, having sufficient elasticity to permit of flexure of the free ends of the frame toward and away from one another.
The freeends of the frame have their inner faces provided with circular recesses 12, and these free ends of the frame have apertures 13 centrally of these recesses, and are provided with pins 14 upstanding in the recesses for a purpose which will be presently made plain.
The two impression members 15 and 16 have interfitting serrated opposing faces 17 and are provided centrally of their length with outstanding circular bosses 18, the latter adapted to movably interfit the recesses 12 of the frame sides. These bosses are provided with arcuate slots 19 to receive pins 14 and also have central threaded openings for the reception of the inner portions of screws 20, the latter passing through the apertures 13 of the frame sides in order to movably hold the impression members in such manner that they may be turned lengthwise of the frame, as in Fig. 2, or at right angles to the frame as at Fig. 1, the pins 14 working in the slots 19 and the ends of the slots thus constituting the limits of shifting movement of the impression members 15 The impression members are of narrow elongated form and thus when turned lengthwise of the frame as in Fig. 2, are adapted to receive one end of a check form between the same, whereby the impression may be conveniently made across the numerical amount of the check where the space for such amount is formed near one end of the check. With the device inthe position shown in Fig. 1-, it is simply necessary to place the thumb on the free end of the lever 24 over the latch stud 26, in order that slight pressure on the leverand rearward sliding movement may free theilatch stud, and incidentally free. the lever. Upon release of pressure, a spring 28 around the stud 22 and compressed between the tVVO'iSldQS of the frame, tends to force the framesides away from one another and thus tends to separate the impression members to the position shown in Fig. 3. .lThG impression members are then extended over the end of acheck as in Fig. 2, or over. the side thereof'as in Fig. 1, after adjustment to a position at right angles to the frame, and by means of the thumb on; the lever. 24, the impression members are then forced toward oneanother so as to indent those portions of the check therebetween by pressing downwardly upon the free end ofthe lever 24, the cam shoulder of the latter engaging the adjacent side of the frame.

2. A check protector including a pair of elongated impression members having serrated opposing faces and having their opposite ends provided with outstanding bosses centrally between the ends thereof, a U- shaped supporting frame having the ends of its extensions provided at their inner sides with recesses to receive said bosses, threaded fasteners projecting through the extensions of the frame and'engaging the bossed portions of the impression members to hold the same rotatably in position whereby they may be shifted from longitudinal to a transverse position with respect to the frame, and hand actuated means for shifting the extensions of theframe toward one another including a stud projecting from one extension of the frame through the other extension thereof, and a cam lever pivoted on the said stud and engageable with the last mentioned extension of the frame.
3. A check protector including a pair of impression members having opposing serrated faces, a U-shaped frame in the ends of the extensions of which the said impression members are rotatably mounted for movement from a longitudinal to a transverse position with respect to the frame and vice versa, said frame and said impression members having relatively engaging means to limit adjusting movement of the impression members and clamping means in connection with the frame for shifting the extensions thereof toward and away from one another.
4. A check protector including a pair of impression members having opposed serrated faces, a U-shaped frame at the ends of the extensions of which said impression members are mounted, one of the extensions of said frame having a stud projecting from one of the extensions of the frame and through the other extension thereof, a lever pivoted at one end to the free end of the stud and having adjacent to its pivot a cam for engagement at the other frame extension, said frame and free end of said lever having relatively engaging means to secure the lever against the frame.
5. A check protector including a pair of impression members having opposed serrated faces, a U-shaped frame at the ends of-theextensions of which said impression members are mounted, one of the extensions of said frame having a stud pro ecting from frame Whose extensions are movable toward and away from one another, a pair of impression members of elongated shape, having serrated opposing faces and movably mounted in connection with said frame extensions for adjustment from a lengthwise to a transverse position and vice versa, and clamping means in connection with the frame for moving its extensions and the said impression members toward and away from one another.
