Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEa HERMANN AHREND, or NEWARK, NEw JERSEY, AssiGNoR To RoMER a oo., or sAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PADLOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,113, dated October 20, 1874; application iiled June 3, 1874.
GAsE 0.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN AEREND, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State ot' New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
My invention relates to that class of locks in which a U-shaped bail or hasp is held by means of a series of tumblers placed upon a central keybarrel, and entering notches in the two arms of the hasp; and the nature of my invention consists in the use of a spring extending along one of the ribs of the lock, and bearing against the edges of all the tumblers which have a notch on outside, by which means the tumblers are prevented from being accidentally displaced, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side view of a lock embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a transverse section, of the same. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the lock. Fig. 5 is an interior view of the lock with the working parts removed. Fig. 6 is a similar View with all the parts in position. Fig. 7 is another interior View, with the spring-plate that holds the tumblers against the top of the lock removed. Fig. 8 shows the tumblers; Fig. 9, the plates between the tumblers; and Fig. 10, the key.
A represents the lock-case, and B is the U- shaped hasp or shackle, the arms of which are notched at regular intervals on their inner ends, as shown in Fig. 2. C represents the central key-barrel, for the passage ot' the flat key D, which key 'is constructed substantially in the manner shown in Fig. 10. Around the barrel C are placed a series of circular tumblers, E E, and between said tumblers are placed plates G G. These plates are held in place by having notches in their ends tttin g over interior ribs c c in the sides of the case A. All the tumblers and plates are held up against the top of the case by means of a spring-plate, H, which rests upon the bottom plate I of the lock. Each tumbler is provided with additional slots, so as to form points w and y, in addition to the point z, that the key of the lock will take against. The slot forming the point is made so that a key being inserted, in which the corresponding ward is a triile longer than it ought to be, it will catch on said point, and thus turn the tumbler out of its place. In like manner the point y will be caught by the ward being even a trifle too small. Each tumbler has, of course, curved notches b on opposite sides for the passage of the arms ot' the shackle when unlocking the lock. When the tumblers are in the locked position they are held by a spring or springbar, d, inserted along one of the ribs a, in notches t', formed in the edge oi' the tumblers. This spring does not prevent the tumblers from being turned by the key, but prevents simply any accidental movement of them while the lock is locked. One of the arms of the shackle B is made longer than the other, and in or through the end thereof is passed a pin or cross-bar, h, which, when the lock is unlocked, and the shackle withdrawn, enters a circular recess, f, in the upper part of the lock, thereby keeping the shackle connected with the lock when open.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The spring d, plates G, tumblers E, with notches z, and ribs a, the spring d extending the entire length of one of the ribs, and bearing against the same, and also against the tumblers, holding the latter in position to prevent their being accidentally displaced, as and vfor the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERMANN AHREND.
Witnesses ABRAHAM MANNERs, It. J D. DUNN.
