NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. HALL AND DE WITT LASHER, OF FORT PLAIN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SUSPENDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,083, dated October 20, 1874 {application filed August 1, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE B. HALL and DE WITT LASHER, of Fort Plain, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Suspenders; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. a
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of our suspenders. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
The object of our invention is to improve gentlemens suspenders by connecting the buttonhole straps to spiral springs by means of catgut or rawhide, said springs being inclosed in leather'pockets, to which the webbing of the suspenders is suitably secured, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
In the annexed drawings, A A designate the webbing straps of the suspenders, which straps may or may not be elastic; and B B B designate leather pockets, one of which, B, is permanently secured to the two straps A A behind, and the other two are attached to the straps A A in front by means of buckles, as shown in Fig. 1. G O O designate the button-hole straps, which have loops a formed on them, and are put together in pairs. Each loop a has suitably secured to it two cords,'D D, made of catgut or rawhide, which cords pass through helical springs S S, and have knots formed on their upper ends to prevent them from being drawn through the springs. The springs S S are stitched between the two pieces of leather forming each pocket, and the lower ends of the springs bear against metal pieces 6. which are secured by eyelets between the lower ends-of the said leather pieces.
It will be seen from the above description that the springs S S will give free elasticity to the suspenders both in front and in rear, and that such elasticity will be more durable than that which is obtained from the use of india-rubber.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in suspenders, of the pockets B B, the former rigidly attached to the straps A behind, and the latter attached thereto by buckles in front, and the button-hole straps O O secured, by means of loops a, to the catgut or rawhide cords D, knotted at their upper ends, and encircled by helical springs S, arranged longitudinally in sets of two in the pockets B B, and prevented from escaping therefrom by the metal plates 0, as and for the purposes specified. f
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE B. HALL.
DE WITT LASHER. Witnesses:
G. W. FRIsBIE, MARVIN E. WELLER.
