IMPROVEMENT IN VENTILATING-BLANKS FOR lLLUMlNATlNG-TILES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,060., dated October 20, 1874; application filed September 10, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM LYNCH, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented an Improved Ventilating-Blank for Illuminating-Tiles; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.

My invention relates to an improvement in the ventilatingblanks for illuminating-tiles which is described and claimed in the Letters Patent No. 152,135, which were issued to me on the 16th day of June, 1874.

The object of my improvement is to provide a means by which the ventilating-openin g can be closed in cold weather, in order to prevent the frost or damp from entering the cellar, basement, or other apartment which is illuminated by the tile.

In order to explain my invention, so that others will be able to understand its exact nature, reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my perforated tile or blank. Fig. 2 is a view of the closing-key. Fig 3 is a sectional elevation, showing the key in place.

A is a ventilating-blank such as I use, in connection with glass-lights, in the construction of illuminating-tiles. This blank is made of metal, in the form of an inverted cup, and has an opening, 0, in the center of the top, through which the cellar or basement is ventilatc-d. To provide for closing this opening in damp or frosty weather I tap the opening with screw-threads, and employ a short screw, 0, which is formed on the end of a key, f, for closing the opening. The screw 6 is of the proper size and length to screw into the openin g and fit flush with the upper surface of the blank. The key has an enlargement, '5, next to the screw, and the face of this enlargement, which is next to the screw, is flat, so as to provide a shoulder which will fit snugly against the projection inside of the blank. The opposite end of the key is made in the form of a cross, or made wider, as at 0, so as to give the fingers a good leverage while screwing it into place. I also make a small hole in this end of the key, in which one end of a short chain can be secured, while the opposite end is secured to the tile-frame, in order that the key may not be lost when removed from the blank.

To adapt the blank for receiving the key, I cast an extra thickness of metal around the hole inside of the blank, thus giving greater depth of metal for holding the screw-plug and strengthening the blank.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The ventilating-blank A, having its ventilating-opening 0 provided with screw-threads, in combination with the screw a, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
