To all i12-710m it fmay/ concern Be itknown that I, JOHN A. DAVIDSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Glendale, Brooklyn, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slitters and Perforators for Cylinder and Kelly Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relatesl to slitters and. per forators for cylinder and Kelly presses and has for its object to provide an improved de vice to overcome the disadvantageous features of those devices of a similar nature now in use.
Heretofore, such slitters or perforators were provided. but they had the disadvan tage that the paper to be slit or perforated could not be controlled causing an imperfect register, and the control of the slitting or perforation could not be had, and more over they necessitated the use of a steel band for perforation as a backing underneath the tympan on the cylinder which was disadvantageous in use.
`My improved invention comprises a slitter or perforator which, bv virtue of its position in respect to the roll, provides a very sharp cut and can be readily controlled. It is simple in structure and facile in its'use.
The invention will be hereinafter disclosed in connection with the embodiment shown in the drawings, and the said invention will be described and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a side view of a cylinder press arranged in respect to its type carriage and showing the positioning of my improved device in respect to these parts;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the end of my improved device;
Fig. 3 is a vertical side view;
Fig. 4 is a vertical side view of a different side to that shown in Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a perforating wheel.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the various views.
Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 2 to 5, my improved ldevice consists of a standard 10 having a split joint bearing member 11 at one end thereof on which is seated a clamping portion 12 held to the bearing member 11 y by screws 13 adapted to be fastened in position by `the thumb members 14. The bearing member 11 and the cap member 12 are adapted to be clamped by these screws 13 tightly against a support 15 which is held on a bracket 16 suitably supported on the stationary bed 17, as shown in Fig. 1, though this support -15 may be secured to the frame of the cylinder press in any other suitable manner.
The other end of the standard 10 is provided witha forked member consisting of legs 1S and 19 which support a shaft 20 suitably held in position by a device 21 of well known construction. interposed between the legs 18 and 19 the slitting'wheel 22 is supported on the shaft 20 in an suitable manner. The shaft 2O is provided with bearing membersor washers 23 interposed between the slitter or perforator 22 and the 'legs 18 and 19 so as to keep the slitter 01 perforator 22 in suitable position and the shaft is also provided with an end washer or cap 24 arranged along oneof the legs18 or 19 of Fig. 3, this cap 24 being arranged4 along the leg 19 of Fig. 3. The perforator may be provided with projecting teethr25 as shown in Fig. 5 with an opening 26 through which the shaft passes, or 'in the event of a plain slitter being used the knife edge along the peripheral portion is a single continuous cutting edge. The configuration of the teeth 25 may be of any suitable shape as is well known in the art.
The device as has been described support-ed on the support 15 in turn supw ported by a suitable bracket 16 is so arranged in respect to the cylinder that it enters into the bite of the cylinder 30 and the printing type 31, which printing type 31 is supported on the movable member 32 which reciprocates to and fro as is well known. The slitter or perfo-rator portion of the device is arranged as far inwardly into the bite between the cylinder 30 and the type 31 as is practical so as not to contact with the type but to contact with the paper held on the cylinder. This paper 33 is held at one end 34 and after the paper is printed and slit or perforated it is released and a new sheet of paper is applied all in a manrner well known. The improvement upon a cylinder press to adapt it to my improved device consists in providing a tympan upon the cylinder and providing this tympan with eol gaps. I have indicatedthe tympan by 36 and the gaps by 37. When then the slitter or perforator 22 presses against the paper and this in turn presses against the tympan a slitting or perforating action upon the paper on the cylinder 30 results, but When the perforator or slitter 22 passes over the paper in juxtaposition to the gaps 37 the lack of resistance prevents a. sufficient tenacity, and hence the paper is not cut or slitted.
p Thus, it will be seen that my invelntion resides in providing a perforator or slitter in the bite of a vcylinder and type as closely as permissible so as to keepy in registration and to bring the perforator or slitter as near to the best printing surface as possible, and at the same time provide the tympan with gaps so as to prevent the slittingy or perforating at certain parts of the paper as desired,
My invention is particularly applicable to the simultaneous printing and slitting or perforating of check books or the like, and the simplicity of parts gives efficiency to the structures and the arrangement of the perforator or slitter as close as possible to the best printing surface gives a very efficient cut or perforation.
I have thus described my invention by the use of an embodiment thereof as shown in the drawings and described in the specification, but I ldo not Wish to be limited to details thereon as it is clear that changes may be madetherein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
l. The combination with a cylinder printing press, including a rotary cylinder and a movable bed, a perforator or slitter mounted with vits cutting edge in close relation to the printing surface and cooperating therewith tionary support, and a movable printing bed carried by said support, of a perforator or slitter 1, carried by said stationary support adapted to have its cutting edge cooperate with the'rotary cylinder.

The combinationv With a cylinder printing press including a rotary cylinder, a statio-nary support and a movable printing bed carried by said support, of a perforator or slitter carried by said stationary support in close relationwto the printing surface along the cylinder, and a tympan surrounding the cylinder adapted to cooperate with the cntting edge of sai-d perforator or slitter. 4

Thevcombination With a cylinder printing press including a rotary cylinder, a stationary Support and a movable Iprinting bed carried by said support, of -a perforator or slitter carried by said stationary support in close relation to the printing surface along the cylinder', and a tympan having gaps therein, surrounding the cylinder adapted to cooperate with said perforator or slittervfor cutting paper carried on the cylinder except in parts Where the gaps in the tympan occur'.
