Description

Patented Nov. 3, 1925.
UNITED STATES LOUIS FOSTER JACKSON, OF ALEXANDRIA, LOUISIANA.
WRENCH CUP.
Application filed July 10, 1924:. Serial No. 725,221.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS FOSTER J ACK- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexandria, in the parish of Rapides and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a lVrench Cup, of which the following is a specification.
lily invention relates to automobile accessories and has particular relation to a wrench adapted for operating the oil drain cocks of Ford automobiles.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a wrench of this character formed with an oil receiving cup, whereby waste of oil is prevented. Another object of the invention is to provide in a wrench of this character an oil cup which will automatically assume a vertical position irrespective of manipulation of the wrench proper. A further object of the invention is to provide in a wrench of this character sight means for indicating the amount of oil drained through a cock to which the wrench is applied.
lVith these general objects in view and such others as will be apparent from the description, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which:
Figure 1, is a perspective view of a wrench constructed in accordance with the principles of invention;
Figure 2, an elevation, partly in section, of an oil cup disposed on the wrench, and
Figure 3, is a vertical section through the bottom of an oil cup illustrating a plug for closing same.
The details of the invention comprise an oil drain cock wrench formed of a relatively long shank 1, provided at one end with a handle 2 and at its opposite end with flanges 3 and 4 arranged for reception therebetween of the handle of an oil drain cock.
Associated with the shank 1 of the wrench is an oil receiving cup comprising a funnel shaped receptacle 5 formed of a stamped metal blank, and provided at its lower end with a depending threaded nipple 6 for reception upwardly therein of a glass tube 7 threaded at its upper portion and provided with a closed bottom. The body portion 5 of the receptacle is secured on the shank of the wrench by means of an upstanding bail strip 8 looped over the shank portion as at 9 bent so that the strip may be attached to the body portion by means of suitable rivet members 10.
This construction of the bail strip 8 and its loop 9, provides for a pivotal connection of the oil receptacle with the wrench shank. The loop 9 is formed as a sleeve sufficiently large to permit free movement over the shank 1 so that the cup may slide on the shank relative to the wrench and longitudinally thereof, or may rotate on the shank as an axis. The glass tube 7 disposed in the bottom of the oil receptacle 5, will give sufficient weight to the cup so that it will at all times assume a vertical position when the wrench is applied.
At one side of the flanges 3 and 4 on the operating end of the wrench, the body 5 of the receptacle is provided with an upwardly curved lip 11, while the upper edge 12 of the receptacle body at the opposite side of the wrench is disposed below the flanges located thereon, as clearly illustrated in Figure 2. Thisconstruction allows for the curvature of that part of the crank casing of an automobile wherein the oil drain cocks and oil reservoir are located.
If desired the glass tube 7 may be removed and a closure cap or plug 123 threaded over the nipple 6 in place thereof, effectively closing the bottom of the receptacle.
In operation the wrench, having a relatively long shank, is inserted beneath the machine through the side thereof to bring the flanges 3 and 4t into engagement with the handle'of the oil drain cock which it is desired to open. Owing to the disposition of the sleeve 9, the receptacle may be slid along the shank of the wrench to dispose the receptacle under the operating end thereof whereby the cock engaging flanges will. be disposed directly over the top of the receptacle, and as the wrench is turned oil drained from the cock will be fed into the glass tube 7, visually indicating to the operator the amount of oil drained from the cock, if any. Further, the arrangement of the sleeve 9 permits of the wrench being turned freely relative to the receptacle, so that a drain cock may be opened or closed without disturbing the vertical position automatically assumed by the receptacle.
While I have illustrated and described certain details entering into the construction and operation of the invention, I desire it to be understood that the invention is not limited thereby, but that any desired changes and improvements may be made in the structural details thereof as will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim The combination with an oil wrench, of an oil receiving cup formed of a single piece of sheet metal bent substantially funnel shaped, a bail strip secured to the upper portion of the cup, an eye formed on the upper end of said strip rotatably and slidably engaged with the shank of the wrench, and a transparent oil receiving member attachably mounted on the bottom of said funnel shaped cup whereby the quality of the oil in the receiving member may be readily observed.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my 20 signature.
