ATTACHMENT FOR JACKS.

In most forms of lifting jacks as at present constructed, it is necessary to place-a jack head underneath the object to be lifted in order to employ the same, An object of this invention is to provide an attachment for any ordinary lifting jack which will enable the same to be used for the purpose of lifting objects which lie at a lower level than the jack head itself.

Another object is to provide such a device which shall be simple and economical in manufacture and may be applied to a ljack head of practically any type.

A further object of the invention is to provide such an attachment which can be turned to various angles for the purpose of lifting articles or exerting force thereon in other than a perpendicular direction.

Other objects will be apparent from the following detailed description and the appended claims.

The drawings illustrate a jack head A supported by a base B and operated by a handle C. These parts in themselves form no part of the invention and the form shown is to be regarded as merely illustrative and as in no way limiting the application of invention since the attachment is particularly designed to be employed in connection with substantially all forms of lifting jacks.

The attachment itself comprises a plate 1 to which is attached by rivets 2 a second plate 3. This plate has at its ends downturned ears 4 and through each pair of ears passes a bolt 5 held in position by a nut 6. At one end of the device there passes freely 9, 1925. Serial No. 1,390.

through the plates a bolt 7 having a screw threaded portion'S whioliis engaged by a nut 9 to prevent withdrawal of the bolt. This bolt terminates in a relatively large eye 1() at its lower end. Twohook members 11 are provided with eyes l2 through which passes the eye 10 of the bolt 7. these hook members terminate in a hook .portion 113 asshown in Figure 2.

Since lthe bolt T passes freely through the plates it can be turned. to any position about its axis and since the engagement of the eyes 12 of the hook members 11 with the eye 10 of the bolt 7 is a loose and very free engagement, it is obvious that the hooks may be turned to a large number of different positions for the purpose of engaging objects which may occupy tions to the j ack head.

In the modication shown in Figure 4, the opposite ends of the plates 1 and 3 are provided with an opening through which passes loosely a bolt 14 similar to the bolt 7 and provided with a screw threaded portion 15 engaged by a nut 16. This bolt 14 has an eye 1T in which engages the eye 19 of a single hook member 18 provided With a hook end 20. This single hook member is or may be substantially identical With one of the hook members 11. At various times it is found desirable to employ a single hook member and in some cases the hook members at both ends of the plate may be similarly used.

In the form shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, Where a supporting bolt is provided only at one end of the device, the ears 4 are prefer ably bent over from the' sides of the plate 3 leaving a tongue portion of the plate 3 through which the bolt 7 passes. In the form shown in Figure 4, both ends' are formed alike while if only one bolt is employed the ears 4 may be formed at the end of the plate opposite to the bolt by turning down the whole end portion of the plate 3.

It is obvious that the device may be made in varying dimensions and that it can be at- Each of widely different rela' tached to any usual form of jack head by I jack head and it will ordinarily not be necessary even to remove the bolt 7 Obviously various changes may be made in the exact construction of the details without in any way departing from. the spirit of `theinvention, which is to be regarded as limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
