Patented Oct. 27, 1925.
UNITED STATES CHARLES B. PHELPS, JR., OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE COPYHOLDER.
Application filed August 1, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAnLEs B. PHELPS, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee. have invented new and useful Improvements in C-opyholders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to copyholders and has for an object the provision of a holder having means for securing copies of different characters upon opposite sides thereof, so as to increase the usefulness of the device, means also being provided whereby the holder may be adjusted to present either side for use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of novel means for securing a stenographers note-book to the holder so that it will remain in open position.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel, cheap and efficient form of line indicator which is formed from a single length of material and shaped for adjustable connection with the holder.
With the above and other objects in view. the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction. to be hereinafter more fully described. illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings 2- Figure 1 is a view of the invention arranged in position for use.
Figure 2 is a detail elevation showing the reverse side of the holder.
Figure 3 is a central section of the holder with a stenographers note-book in position thereon;
Figure 4 is a transverse section taken substantially on the line 44 of Figure 2, the view being on an enlarged scale.
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing the manner of adjustably securing the panel to the supporting arm.
Figure (3 is a section on the line 6 6 of Figure 1.
Figure 7 is a section on the line 7---7 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a panel which is preferably formed of sheet metal and which may be provided with spaced elongated slots 11 to decrease weight and add to the appearance Serial No. 655,076.
of the panel. Each side edge of the panel is provided with a head 12 which is formed b bending the edges of the panel around a wire or rod 13, so that the beads are substantially cylindrical.
()ne edge of the panel is provided with a supporting ledge 14 which extends downwardly from one face thereof and mounted upon this face at the opposite end of the panel is a clamping bar 15 which is attached to the panel by means of a spring 16. This provides means whereby a book or other article may rest upon the ledge and be held against accidental displacement by the clamping bar 15, as shown by the dotted lines in Figure 1.
The invention further includes means for holding a stenographers note-book or similar copy upon the panel. This means includes spring arms 17 which extend transversely of the panel upon opposite sides and near one end thereof, the said arms being riveted or otherwise secured to the panel as shown at 18. A note-book may be secured to the panel by having one of its cover portions 19 passed beneath one of the arms 17 and its other cover portion 20 folded over the end of the panel and secured beneath the other arm 17 and due to the resilient character of these arms the book will be securely held in open position.
The invention further includes a line indicator which is formed from a single length of material and shaped to provide opposite clamping members 21, from which extend spaced fingers 22 by means of which the members 21 may be separated for adjustable engagement with either of the beads 12. Extending from one of the members 21 is a panel engaging portion 23, while extending from this last mentioned portion is a line indicating arm 24 which is offset from the face of the panel. The indicator may thus be adjusted longitudinally of the panel and frictionally held in place, or may be removed and secured to the opposite side edge of the panel.
One of the beads 12 is cut, away and the wire or rod 13 of this bead has extending therefrom an arm 25 which is rotatably held within an opening provided in a block 26. The arm 25 extends through the block and carries at its outer end a neck or head 26' and positioned between this neck or head andthe adjacent face of the block is a coiled spring 27. This spring acts to frictionally hold the arm 25 against rotation. but permits of its manual rotation so as to reverse the position of the panel. The oloch 2G is pivotally mounted upon the outer cud of a sectional supporting arm 28, the sections of which are pivotally connected together as shown at 29, while the inner or opposite end of this arm 28 is provided with a sleeve 30. This sleeve receives a standard 31 and is adjustably held thereon by means of set screws 32, while the standard is removahly and rotatably positioned within a tubular holder or sleeve 33. This last mentioned sleeve is carried by a base 34 by means of which it may be mounted upon'a desk or other support.
The device is especially adapted for use upon folding or drop-head typewriter deslts. in that the standard 31 may be removed from the holder 33 to permit the desk to close in the usual manner. By adjusting the sectional arm 28, the panel 10 may be arranged as desired. while further adjustment may be effected by rotating or rocking the arm 25 within the block 26 so as to secure the desired inclination of the panel. The last mentioned means also provides means whereby the panel may be reversed so as to present either face for use.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form. proportions and minor details of construction and the right here in reserved to make such changes as proper- 1y fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
A. copy holder of the character described comprising a panel having its opposite side edges curved over longitudinally extending cylindrical bar members and providing beads thereon, one of said cylindrical bar members having a transversely extending shaft member thereon, bearing blocks received on the transversely extending shaft a retractile spring interposed between the outer end of the transversely extending bar member and the corresponding side edge of the bearing blocks, and supporting means positioned on the lower side of the bearing blocks whereby the panel may be manually turned at any angle desired.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
CHARLES B. PHELPS, JR.
