UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
cnAaLEsa. rox, on 'NEW YORK, N. Y.
CQLLAPSIBLE Box.
Application filed October 23, 1924. Serial No. 745,271.
To all whom it may concermv Be it known that I, CHARLES A. Fox, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, county ofNew York, and State of New York, have'i'nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Boxes, of which the following is a specification. l l V This invention relates to improvements in receptacles, and has particularreference to a collapsible box of the typejdisclosed in my previous Patent No. 1,498,441, dated June 17, 1924. 1 7
An object of the present invention is to provide a box of simple and inexpensive construction wherein the side walls and the bottom section thereof are reinforced by interlockingtherewith adjacent portions of a collapsible lining. V
Another object is to-form the boxwith a collapsible lining certain sides of which are utilized to reinforce the sides of a section of the box and another side of said lining bracing the rear wall of the box and being itself reinforced against collapsing when the lining is in operative position.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.
In the drawings Figure l is a perspective view of the box in open position;
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section" through the box in open position;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the box partially collapsed;
Figure 1 is an end elei ation of the box in its completely collapsed position; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary top plan view partially in section showing the manner of interlocking the lining and side wall of the bottom section of the box, the parts being shown in the same relative positions illus trated in Figures 1 and 2.
The box illustrated in the drawings is commonly known as a telescoping box wherein one section thereof is completely nested within the other section when the box is closed. v
The box proper is formed from a single sheet of suitable material, such as cardboard or the like, and consists of the bottom and top sections generally indicated by the nu merals 6 and 7, said sections being joined by an intermediate section 8 which forms the rear wall of the box when in closed position, said section 8 providing a hinged connection between the bottom and top sectlons.
The bottom section 6 includes a front wall 9 and side walls 10, the forward ends of which overlap the ends of the front wall and are secured thereto by suitable fastening devices "11. Said side walls 10 are scored, as indicated at 12, to permit of the side walls being folded down upon the bottom of the section 6 when the box is collapsed.
An inner lining'l3 for the bottom section 6. is provided and'is formed of a single strip of material having its ends 14 overlapped with the ends of the front wall 9 upon the inner side of. the latter and secured to said front wall by the fasteners 11. By thus procutaway to provide substantially V shaped notches 16 extending approximately half of the depth of said side walls and the lower edges of the sides 15 of the lining are likewise formed with notches 17 of inverted V shape. When the box is extended in set u or operative position each side 15 of the lining is interlocked with the'adjacent side wall 10 by extending the material of the side 15 adjacent the notch therein and the notch 16 in the side wall through the latter notch sov that the remaining portion of said side 15 is extended exteriorly of said side wall. By thus interlocking the lining with the side walls of the bottom section the latter walls are reinforced and adequately braced against collapsing when the box is in inoperative position.
The lining 13 further includes a rear wall 18 which, when the lining is extended as just described, forms the rear wall of the bottom section and which is engaged by The out its length with a laterally and inwardly extending reinforcing flange 19 which en the bottom of the section 6, as clearly shown in Figure 2, and thereby imparts a degree of rigidity to the wall 18 and reinforces the same against inward and outward pressure.
The sides indicated at 20, to permit of said lining be ing; collapsed to the folded position shown in Figure 3 when the box is not in use.
The top section 7 includes the side walls 21 overlapped at their free ends with the adjacent ends of the front wallQQ-of said section and secured to said front wall by suitable fasteners to form reinforced corners for the section. At the inner ends of the side walls 21 adjacent the intermediate section 8 said walls are creased or folded, as indicated at 24, to permit of the side walls being collapsed to the position shown in -Ti igure 3 and said side walls fare additionally scored, as indicated at 25, to also aid in the collapsing of said walls, to-
vgether with the front wall 22.
With the top and bottom sections and the lining collapsed the top section may be folded over upon the bottom section,;as indicated in Figure 4, so that when the box is not in use the same will form a compact structure which will occupy a minimum space in storage.
\Vhat is claimedis:
i. In a collapsible box, a bottom section including side walls provided with notches therein, and a collapsible reinforcing inner lining for said section also having side walls provided withxnotehes therein, the first named notches being capable of receiving portions of said lining adjacent the second of the lining are scored, as
vmediate portions rear wall of the bottom section whennamed notches whereby the side walls of said section and lining are interlocked when the latter is in extended position.
2. In a collapsible box, a bottom section including side walls, and a collapsible reinforcing lining for said section also including side walls capable of interlocking rela tion intermediate their ends with intermediate portions of the first named side walls, the front ends of the side walls of said lining being extended .interiorly of said first named side walls and the remaining portions of the side walls of said lining {being extended from the points where they interlock with the side walls of the section to the rear ends and on the exterior sides of the latter side walls.
3. In a collapsible box, a bottom-section including side walls, and a collapsible reinforcing lining for said section also including side walls capable of interlocking relation intermediate their ends -with interof the first named side walls, the front ends of the side walls of said lining being extended interiorly of said first named side walls and the remaining portions of the side walls of said lining being extended from the pointswherethey interlock with the side walls ,of the sect-ion to the rear ends and on the exterior sides of the latter side walls, and said lining further including a rear wall forming the t e lining is extended, said rear wall having a reinforcing flange engageable with the bottom of said bottom section.
In testimony whereof I have allixed my signature.
