IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED SCRUBBERS ANDMOPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 155,888, dated October 13, 1874; application filed May 29, 1874.

To all lwhom it may concern:

Beit known that I, GEORGE PIRRUNG, of Ravenswood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Mop, of which the following is a specification My invention consists of a moppin g contiivance attached to a handle, and consisting of a water-receiving boX and a piece of thick flexible rubber, so contrived that, by placing the edge of the rubber on the iioor and pulling quickly along, it will spring back from the waterboX, forming an opening into it, through which it will force the water which it gathers from the floor at its front, and then, being quickly lifted from the floor, it will instantly spring up to the boX and close it, and confine the water to be removed and poured out into a pail or other receptacle.

A represents a brush-l1ead,whicl1is attached to a board, A', by hooks c. B is the handle, which is attached to the board A'. D is the water-box, which is also attached to the handle board A', being fastened by bolts b. It projects beyond one edge of the board A', and has one side formed by the elastic indiarubber strip c, which is secured, at one edge, to the board A' in a rabbet at I, and at the other edge projects beyond the water-box, against which it bears firmly, being pushed against it by the spring E, pressure-bar G, connecting-rods F, and also by the rubber clips L, the latter being at the ends. The spring E is supported on the bolt K, which passes through the water-boX. M is an opening at one end and the upper side ofthe box, for pouringout the water gathered up from the door. From the mop the handle B is turned out, so as to turn the brush uppermost, which adjusts the machine so that the projecting edge of the rubber C will rest on the floor. Then, by pulling it quickly along the oor, the rubber will be sprung back a little from the edge of the waterbox, opening a little space, through which the Water on the floor, being thrown upward by the rubber, will pass into the box, where it will be conlined by the rubber closing instantly when, at the-moment of stopping the movement of the machine, it is lifted from the floor. A

Thus it will be seen that, after scrubbing the floor with the brush, the water may be quickly mopped up and disposed of, the work being done quicker, better, and with less labor than by the ordinary mops; and, beside, both the scrubbing and the mopping can be done with the same machine.

The holes for the bolts b, by which the waterbox is fastened to the head A', are elongated or slotted, so that the box can be shifted up along the head from time to time as the rubber wears away.

The rubber clips L, :xt the ends, are also useful for preventing the water from flowing' `around the ends of the scrubber as it is forced against the water. v

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Fatent- The combination, with the water-box H, of the flexible strip O, forming part or all of the bottom, and projecting at the side of said box, and the devices for exerting pressure on the strip, consisting of the bar G,- rods F, and a spring, E, as shown and described.
