VILLIAM It. MILLS, OF HARTFORD, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,8Sl. dated October 13, 1874; application filed July 28, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. MrLLs, of Hartford, in the county of Van Buren and State of M ichi gan have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare thefollowingto be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in sash-fasteners; and it 0011- sists in a double-ended catch, pivoted to the side of the sash, and to which is secured a movable spring-arm for reversing its ends, so that by striking against small pins or stops in the window-frame the sash can be supported while up, or locked while down, as will be more fully described.
The accompanying drawing represents my invention.
a represents a portion of the window-frame. Pivoted to the side of the sash is a doubleended tilting-catch, d, which has secured to it near one end the movable reversing springarm 6, which arm can be made to catch either upon the inner or outer side of the knob g. When resting against the inner side the lower end is pressed inward against the side of the frame, so that, while the sash can be readily run up, as soon as it is attempted to lower it the end of the catch catches against a small stud or projection in the side of the frame, and stops it.
\V hen the sash is down, and the arm made to catch against the outer side of the knob, the upper end of the catch is tilted inward, when it at once catches against the under side of the studs or stops '1', and prevents the sash from being raised.
When the arm is turned, so as to rest against the front of the knob, the catch assumes a vertical position, so that neither end catches against the stops, and the sash can be freely raised or lowered.
Thus it will be readily seen that the catch can be made to support the window when up, or look it when down, or need not he used at all, as may be desired.
Instead of the studs '1' any other kinds of stops may be used.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- The combination of tilting double-ended catch (1, movable reversing spring-arm c, knob g, and stops 1', substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of June, 1874.
WILLIAM R. MILLS.
