To all w hom t may concern Be it known that I, Pliner E. AUGHAN,
. a citizen of the United States, and resident of San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specilcation. j
My invention relates particularly to deep well centrifugal pump construction.
It is the object of my invention to provide a pump construction wherein the pump assembly and discharge casing column are supported by a structure within the discharge casing column and preferably cnclosing the pump shaft.
It is another object of my invention to provide a means for suspending the pump bowl assembly whereby a discharge casing column of slight tensile strength may be used.
It is a further object of my invention to provide means whereby a discharge casing column supported from its lower end may be subjected to compression strainswhereby water tight joints are insured.
It is still a further object of my invention to provide a structure wherein the driving shaft of the pump is closed oli" from the water by an enclosing tube, and wherein the enclosing tube supports the pump bowl assembly, and the pump bowl assembly supports a second enclosing tubular column for closing off the water discharged by the pump from the well,

Referring more particularly to the drawing I show at. 1 the well casing of the usual deep well casing construction. At 2 is the discharge head the base 8 of which has an annular depending flange el formed. integrally therewith, the said flange surrounding a discharge casing column 5 which extends froin the head 2 to the bowl assembly as at 6.
In the embodiment shown inFigure 1 the discharge casing 5 is made up of a number of longwooden strips shaped as to make an annular tube and held together by the wire winding as T and staples as 8. This tube or casing is made up in this way in suitable lengths which are assembled the pump isY lowered, by means of the lap joints as shown at 9 which are wound"` with wire l0 to hold the same in place.
At 11 is shown a tube of small diameter which is securelyl fastened to the bearing bowlQO of the bowl assembly 6 as at 12, and the lengths of tubing are held in align` ment by means of a collar as 13. This tube when assembled `extending upwardly through the discharge head and is threaded into a depending flange la formed inte-y grally with the base plate 15 of the pulley assembly 1G as shown. This flange 14 being internally threaded to receive the tube 11 and is a turning lit in the wall 17 of the discharge head 2. i
The shaft as shown at 18 is connected to the runners ofthe bowl assembly and eX- tends upwardly through tube 11 to the pulley 19 as shown.
The bearing bowl 2O ofthe bowl assembly 6 has its upper end turned out as at 21 to receive the discharge casing 5, a rub,- ber gasket as 22 being inserted between the discharge casing `and the bearing bowl as shown.
The line of shafting 18, shaft enclosing tube 11 anddischarge casing 5 having been built upto the top of the well a rubber gasket 23 is placed upon the upper end of` the discharge casing and the discharge head i put in place thus bringing the liange al. down overe the discharge casing and the gasket as shown making a watertight joint. The pulley assembly is now threaded onto the shaft enclosing tube 11 andthe same is drawn up as far as possible by turning the pulley assembly, then the discharge head and pulley assembly are bolted together as shown.
Thus it is seen that the entire bowl assembly 6, and the discharge casing 5 are all held in alignment by means of the shaft enclosing tube 11. The drawing up of said tube holds the discharge casing tight against the bearing bowl 2O and the discharge head 2 as well as keeping the joints 9 together making the same perfectly water tight. This casing 5 however does not sustain any weight whatever, the whole weiglit being carried by said tube ll as disclosed.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 4 the discharge head 2 has its base portion 3 threaded as at 24 to receive a short length of metal discharge casing as at 25. At 26 is shown the metal discharge pipe column, the several sections of the same being oined together from the bowl assembly to this point as at 27. A space as 28 being left between the upper end of the last section 26 and the lower end of the discharge head section 2.5. Y
At 29-30 is shown an annular flange member having' an inner diameter of slight ly larger size than the outside diameter of the discharge casing as at 3i. The fla-nge 29 being placed over casing 26 and then a 'rubber gasket member 32 shaped as shown is placed on the lange, a cylindrical tube 33 is slipped over the said casing and its outturned end slips over the rubber gasket as shown. The upper end of tube 33 is also out-turned and a second rubber gasket as 34 is placed thereon 'and over this gasket is placed the other flange 30, the two flanges being connected by bolts as 35 which are drawn up as tightly as possible, thus forcing the rubber in bet\ Yeen the cylinder 33 and the walls ci discharge tubes 9.5#26 vthus forming a perfectly water-tight joint but atthev same time doing away with any `'support of casing 26 by casing The said 'casing i6 and the pump bowlassembly being carried by the shaft enclosing tube 11 as stated above.
Thus it is seen that I have provided al pump assembly wherein the discharge casing itself "carries no weight, the same being supported by a structure within the same, thus allowing the use of a discharge casing oi slight tensile strength which is subjected to compression strains whereby water tight joints therein are assured. Ot course when a metal casing is used as shown in Figure 4, the column is not subjected to compression strains and water tight joints of any approved ;t'orm is used.

1. A pump including a discharge casing column, a bowl supporting said column, and supporting means 'for said bowl arranged within said column.
.2. A pump including ay discharge casing column, a bowl supporting said column, an iinpeller within said bowl, a driving shaft for said impeller within said column, and a column enclosing said shaft Within said discharge casing column and supporting said bowl.
8. A pump including a pump head, a discharge casing column slidably connected thereto, a pump bowl supporting said discharge casing, and a shaft casing column supporting said bowl.
4.. A pump including a pump head and a pump bowl, a discharge casing column slidably connected to said head and bowl, clastic gaskets between said casing and said head and bowl, and supporting means for said bowl.
5. A pump including a pump bowl, a discharge casing column slid-ably connected thereto, and supporting means attached thereto within said discharge casing column.
6. A pump including a pump head and a pump bowl, a discharge casing column slid ably connected to said head and bowl, and supporting means for said bowl.
7. A pump including a pump head and a pump bowl, 'a discharge casing column inserted therebetween, supporting means for said bowl within said casing, and a televscoping ljoint in said column between said head and bowl.
8. A pump including a pump head, a pump bowl, a discharge column comprising annularly arranged 'wood stares and means for binding the same togethersupported by said bowl and having sliding 'connection with said head, and Supporting means for said bowl within sai'd column.
The method of building a pump which consists in providing a supporting means, mounting a bowl and impeller thereon and lowering the saine into a well, and building up a continuous wood discharge column on said bowl as it is lowered into the well.
