Description

Patented Oct. 20, 1925.
CLEMENS GRAAFIF, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
LID FOR FIRE EXTINGUISHER-S.
Application filed May 26, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLnMnNs Gunner, a subject of the German Emperor, and residing at 17 Linkstrasse, Berlin, 9, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Lid for Fire Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a lid for fire extinguishers made on the principle of a bridged lid, in which a tappet, serving to open a gas producing cartridge arranged in the extinguisher, or the like is guided with a tight joint in such a manner that its stuffing box is protected against all outward infiuences.
The accompanying drawing exemplifies a constructional form of the present invention. Fig. 1 is a section, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the jointing ring.
In the drawing a designates the container of a fire extinguisher of any suitable shape, in the lid or bottom of which a jointing ring Z) is fastened, for instance, by soldering.
This ring is provided with lugs 0 and slots d. In this ring are further provided an annular groove for receiving a packing material e and an annular face engaged by the flange 7 of an inset vessel or cartridge 9 of a Well known construction.
The plate h, forming the lid proper of the extinguisher is provided with reinforcing webs z and a groove at its rim in such a manner, that it engages over the metallic rim k of the ring 5 securing the packing ring 6 and the flange f of the cartridge 9 in position. By means of this groove in the plate h, when the packing ring 6 is compressed by screwing down a screw spindle n (referred to below) for closing the lid, the plate will not bear on the said metallic rim is.
The screw spindle it having a square 0 is made hollow and serves as a guide for the tappet 19 passing with a tight joint through the plate h, and opening, when pressed down, a metallic foil a, forming the seal of the cartridge 9. This tight joint between the tappet p and the plate It is obtained by means of a stufling box 9. When the lid is closed, this stufiing box is protected against all outward influences by the screw spindle Serial No. 30,671.
at having at its lower end a bellshaped extension 7", which bears against the plate 71. and completely covers the stufiing box.
For closing the lid the plate 71, is set upon the packing ring 6 and pressed against it bridge, when the spindle is unscrewed so that the lid may be opened.
I claim:
1. A bridged lid for fire extinguishers, consisting of a lid plate, a seat on the fire extinguisher for said lid plate, a bridge detachably fitted to the extinguisher, a screw spindle screwing in said bridge and adapted to press said lid against said seat, the said screw spindle and said lid plate being bored and adapted to act as a guide for a tappet, for operating the extinguisher, a stufiing box in said lid plate for said tappet, and on the lower end of said screw a bell, completely covering said stufling box, when the bridge isin operative position.
2. A bridged lid for fire extinguishers, consisting of a lid plate, a seat for said plate having an annular groove containing packing material, a bridge detachably fitted to the extinguisher, a screw spindle screwing in said bridge and adapted to press down said lid against the said packing, the said lid being provided with a. groove at its circumference and engaging over the inner rim of said annular groove, the said spindle and lid plate being bored and adapted to act as a guide for a tappet, for operating the extinguisher, in said lid plate a stalling box for said tappet, and on the lower end of said screw a bell, completely covering said stufling box, when the bridge is in operative position.
3. A bridged lid for fire extinguishers, consisting of a lid plate, a seat for said plate having an annular groove containing packing material, a bridge detachably fitted with its feet in open ended slots in the extin-.
guisher, a screw spindle screwing in said bridge and adapted to press down said lid against said packing, the said lid having a groove at its Oll'CUlTl'lGIGIlCG and engaging over the inner rim of said annular groove, the said spindle and Saul lid plate being bored and adapted to act as a gulde for the tappet for operating the extinguisher, a stufling box in said lid plate for said tappet, and on the lower end of said screw a bell, 10 completely covering said stufling box, when the bridge is in operative position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
