WILLIAM AKIN, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
WATER-FILTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4, 1906.
Application filed February 9, 1906. Serial No. 301,280.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM AKIN, of the city of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain Improvements in Connection with ater-Filters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description or specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings and to the letters marked thereon.
This invention has reference to that class of filters which are used upon the dischargemouths of water-taps or, as they are sometimes called, faucets.
Upon the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a filter and its coupling constructed according to my present improvements. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same corresponding to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the filter-casing detached from the coupling, showing the outwardly-flaring flange, also shown in section in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the coupling and the flange and ring within which is the elastic ring against which the outwardly-flaring flange on the upper end of the filter-casing presses when the filter-casing and the coup ling are screwed together as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 5 is a section of the coupling detached from the filter. Fig. 6 is a transverse section, on an enlarged scale, of the perforated casing at the lower part of the filter casing, as also shown on a smaller scale in Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a plan corresponding to Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the casing of the filter is terial of a non-corrodible character or may be formed of steel, brass, or other material plated with nickel or any metal which resists corrosion.
As will be seen from Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the upper part of this casing is formed with a screw-thread, by which it is connected and screwed onto the exterior lower part of the coupling B, which has a corresponding screwthread formed externally upon the lower part of itself. The flaring flange C of the upper part of the filter-casing A when screwed tight upon the coupling B presses upward and hard against the elastic packing-ring D and causes the packing-ring D to be compressed within the annular recess E, formed upon the lower part of the coupling B by the flange C and the ring C, so that when the filter-casing A is screwed upward upon the lower screwed portion of the coupling B the It is formed of any suitable nia-- flaring flange C compresses the elastic ring D into the annular recess E, which always contains the elastic packing D under any pressure to which it is or may be subjected. By this arrangement a perfectly water-tight connection is formed by means of the flaring flange C of the filter-easing, the flange C, the ring C and the annular recess E of the coupling B, and the elastic ring D, these parts being tightly held in union by the filter-casing and. holder being screwed together in the manner hereinbefore set forth.
While the filter-casing A is readily remov able by unscrewing it from the coupling B, the india-rubber or other elastic lining G, placed within the coupling B, is firmly held in its place so as to be incapable of being forced outward by the pressure of water flowing through the filter because of the upper part of the coupling B being turned slightly over as an inwar(fly-contracting rojection, and the coupling B is held in its p ace upon the nose of a tap or faucet by a cement of shellac dissolved in alcohol. The lower part of the filter-casing is constructed of an upper perforated dome-shaped plate H and of a lower inverted-dome-shaped plate I, the two pieces being connected together by a flange J on the lower portion being turned upward over and pressed upon an annular projection on the upper part, as shown at Fig. 6. The lower part of the filtercasing A, as shown at Fig. 1, is composed of one or more layers of compressed wool K, which rests immediately upon the upper perforated dome H, above which a piece of sponge L is inserted. This piece of sponge becomes compressed Within the filter-casing by means of the inwardlyprojecting flange M at the lower part of the connecting-piece B when the filter is screwed upon the coupling B.
I claim The combination consisting of the filtercasing, the filter-coupling, the lower part of the filter-coupling being screw-threaded externa-lly, the annular recess having its mouth opening downward at the upper end of the screw-thread of the coupling, the annular elastic packing-ring within the annular recess, the filter-casing having its upper part screwthreaded to be screwed upward on the lower part of the coupling, the flaring end of the screwed upper part of the filter-casing pressed by the tightening action of the screw on the coupling and filter-casing respectively, against the elastic packing-ring in the ICS my hand and seal in the presence of tWo subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM AKIN. 1i 5.
annular recess of the coupling, the inwardlyturned flange at the upper end of the coupling for confining the elastic ring therein which provides for the filter being connected 5 With the mouths of Water-taps by shellac cel Vitnesses:
ment, substantially as hereinbefore described. ST. JOHN DAY,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 1 J l D. CORY.
