To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL P. PRATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at At particularly to a valve for controlling gases orliquids under high pressure. The object is to present a valve in which leakage of gas or liquid will be obviated under all conditions of use, whether'the valve be open or closed; furthermore, to effect seating of the valve always in the same position with relation to its seat; furthermore, to provide a simple and effective form of safety device by which danger of explosion of the receptacle to which the valve is attached will be obviated; furthermore, to providea shield or guard for such safety device by which tampering with or damage to the device will be eifectually obviated; furthermore, to provide for the attachment of the outlet-cap to the body of the valve to prevent its loss while not interfering with its use, and, finally, to present a simply-constructed, durable, and thoroughly-efficient valve for the purpose.
With this object in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a device such as described, as
will be hereinafter fully described andelaimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, I haveillustrated a form of embodiment of my invention, it being understood that the results desired may be obtained in other ways than that shown without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in section through the valve, showing the parts in the positions they occupy with relation to each other in use. Fig.2 is a view in front elevation of the valve; and Fig. 3 is a view in horizontal section, taken on the line 3 3, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the suitable metal, the walls of the bore of the boss being threaded for the reception of a threaded plug of, the same when seated having its outer surface flush with the face of the boss. The plug is provided with an orifice a, through which in case of rupture of the disk the gases may escape. By thus positioning the disk it will be removed from danger of-being accidentally ruptured in handling of the valve, and, further, without the provision of a suitable wrench the plug cannot be removed. The boss a is exteriorly threaded for the reception of a cap a having housed within it a washer a of any suitable yielding substance to bear against the face of the boss (1 when the cap is seated, thus to present a gas-tight closure at this point. Oommunication to the interior of the valve for the gas from the receptacle is through a passide with a groove a in which fits a spline carried by a plunger a constituting the valve proper, the function of the groove and spline being to prevent rotation of the plunger and cause it always to seat itself in the same position. The upper portion of the stuffing-box is chambered and internally threaded and by preference is cut away, as at (1/ to permit insertion at this point of a leather crimp a the function of this crimp being when pressure from the gas reaches it to be forced against the stem a, and will thus assist to prevent the escape of gas. Upon the crimp e is placed a metallic washer 0, and upon this a packing-ring 0, preferably of fiber, and upon the packing-ring (L26 a leather washer a, the latter washer being borne upon by a gland 0, threaded to engage the threads of the chamber in the top of the stuffing-box. It will be seen that when the gland is forced down the crimp a, metal washer e fiber or packing a, and leather washer a are closely assembled, the packingring at by preference being caused to bear tightly against the stem a and thus present a gas-tight joint at that point.
The particular function of the leather crimp is to prevent leakage around the valve-stem when the valve is open, for, as before stated, the pressure of the gas will cause this crimp to pack around the stem, the leather washer or packing-ring (1 serving to prevent leakage around the stem of the valve when the same is closed.
It is to be understood that I do not limit myself to locating the crimp in the position shown, as it will be obvious that it may be placed in the packing-ring a and made to perform the function for which it is designed, and, further, that I do not wish to be limited to the employment of the crimp with a metal washer between it and the leather washer, as in some instances the metal washer may be omitted. The upper face of the bottom of the chamber a is provided with a circumferential depression (1 through which the gas escapes to the chamber when the valve is lifted and thence out through a passageway ct, formed in the boss a As a means for preventing loss of the cap a chain a is employed, one end of which is secured to a knob a on the cap, the other end to a projection 0 on the valve-body.
To facilitate the handling of the vessel to which the valve is attached, I provide the valve-body with two or more lugs a Fig. 2, by which also the vessel may be suspended to scales for purpose of weighing.
By the manner of assembling the partsdescribed all leakage of gas or liquid will be absolutely prevented, either when the valve is opened or closed, and by the plunger or valve being a part of the stem the plunger may be readily moved to or from the seat by the employment of an ordinary wrench. It
will be obvious that the screw connection between the plunger and the stem will be eifective for causing a firm seating of the disk-(L upon its seat.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pa'tent of the United States, is

A valve comprising a body provided with a chamber and with a supply passage-way and an escape passage-way, a plunger guided for movement in a predetermined direction within the chamber, the plunger having a threaded orifice,avalve-stem havingathreaded extension engaging the threaded orifice of the plunger, and provided with means whereby it may be turned, a stuffing-box in which the stem works, an enlargement on the stem above the threaded portion thereof, a washer bearing on the enlargement, packing placed around the stem near the upper portion thereof, a crimp below the packing, and a gland for placing the packing under requisite pressure to effect a gas-tight joint, substantially as described.
2. A valve comprising a body portion provided with a chamber and with a supply passage-way and an escape passage-way, a longitudinally-movable plunger for controlling said inlet and outlet passages, a plug screwthreaded into said body portion, a valvestem passing through said plug, a threaded extension carried by said stem and engaging correspondingthreads in. said plunger, an enlarged shoulder or plunger carried by said stem adjacent said threaded extension, packing rings or washers above and below said shoulder or collar for preventing thrust motion, a stuffing-box formed in said plug, a crimp-packing in the box and bearing against said valve stem, a metal ring or washer above said crimp -packing, packing above said metallic ring, and a gland in the top of said plug arranged to press the packing against the valve-stem, substantiallyas de scribed.

plunger guided for movement in a predetermined direction within the chamber and carrying at its lower end a disk of hard rubber, or other material, to engage a seat formed by the bottom of the chamber, to effect a closure at this point, the plunger having at its upper portion a threaded orifice, a valve-stem having a threaded extension engaging the threaded orifice of the plunger, the stem being provided with means whereby it may be turned, a stuffing-box in which the stem works, an enlargement on the stem above the threaded portion thereof, a washer bearing on the enlargement, a packing placed around the stem near the upper portion thereof, a leather washer placed above the packing, and a metallic washer below the packing, a crimp placed below the metal washer, the stuflingbox being cut away below the crimp to permit the latter to project downward, and a gland for placing the'packing under requisite pressure, substantially as described.
5. Avalve comprising a body provided with a chamber and with a supply, an escape and a safety passage-way, the latter being normally sealed by a frangible metallic disk, a
, plunger guided for movement in a longitudinal direction within the chamber, the plunger having a threaded orifice, a'valve-stem having a threaded extension engaging the threaded orifice of the plunger and provided with means whereby it may be turned, a stuffingbox in which the stem works, an enlargement on the stem and a washer bearing on the enlargement, suitable packing bearing against the stem, a flexible crimp below the packing so disposed as to utilize the pressure of the gas to effect a gas-tight closureat all times, a metal washer interposed between the crimp and the packing, and a gland in the stuffingbox and bearing upon the packing, substantially as described.

A valve comprising a main body portion, provided with inlet, outlet, and safety passages, a frangible disk normally closing said safetypassage, a longitudinallymovable plunger for controlling said' inlet and outlet passages, a plug screw-threaded into said body portion, a valve-stem passing through said plug, a threaded extension carried by said stem adapted to enter corresponding screw-threads in said plunger, an enlarged shoulder or collar carried by said stem adjacent said threaded extension, packing rings or washers above and below said shoulder or collar for preventing thrust motion, 'a stuffing-box formed in said plug, a crimp-packing in the bottom of said stuffing-box and bearing against said valve-stem, a metallic ring or washer above said crimp-packing, packing above said metallic ring, and a gland adapted to enter the top of said plug and press said packing against said valve-stem. .2

A valve comprising a body provided, exteriorl y, with lugs, by which the vessel to which the valve is attached maybe suspended, and also with two bosses or extensions, and internally with a supply, an escape, and a safety passage-way, the latter being normally sealed by a frangible metallic disk held in place by a threaded plug engaging a threaded orifice in one of the bosses, a plunger guided for movement in a predetermined direction within the chamber and carrying at its lower end a disk of hard rubber, or other material, to engage a seat formed by the bottom of the chamber, to effect a closure at this point, the plunger having atits upper portion a threaded orifice, a valve-stem having a threaded extension engaging the threaded orifice of the plunger, the stem being provided with means whereby it may be turned, a stuffing-box in which the stem works, and an enlargement on the stem above the threaded portion thereof, a washer bearing on the enlargement, a packing placed around the stem near the upper portion thereof, a leather washer placed above the packing, and a metallic washer placed below the packing, a crimp placed be- V low the metal washer, the stuffing-box being cut away below the crimp to permit the latter to project downward, and a gland for placing the packing under requisite pressure, substantially as described.
