To all whom it. may 0971067711 I i L 135 it known that I, 'VI onN'r Froarro, a citizen of the United States, residing Ghicagm in the county of Cook and State of Illinois; have invented new and useful Improvements" in Tables; of which the fol lowing is a specification. 1
This invention relates to improvements in tables of the self balancing type especial- 1y adapted for use upon shipboard; an object being to provide a table which will accommodate itself to the movement of the ship so as to maintain its top in a horizontal position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a table of this character whose freedom of movement may be adjusted, means being provided for yieldingly holding the table top against movement so as to prevent unduly free movement of the table top.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a table of this character in which the top may be locked against independent movement.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a table constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a section taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure l is a detail perspective view of one of the balancing arms.
Figure 5 is a detail section on the line 55 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates spaced standards which are adapted to be suitably secured to the floor of the cabin or other part of a vessel in a manner to dispose the table longitudinally of the vessel. These standards are provided at their upper ends with bearings 11 and mounted in these bearings for pivotal and longitudinal movement are rods 1.2. The
rods are disposed in alignment and have their inner ends .securedftoplates or brackets 13 which extend downwardly from the loot-j tom off'a table top 1 1 soitliat the table will be"capable"of lateral pivotal o1? rocking movement above the upper ends of the l standards.
Secured to and exter ding' downwardly from'the pivot' rods; 12 are arms '15 which carry at? h i w r nds co t balance \veights 16 brace rods 17 connectingtle arms .15 with th e brackets 13 so that the arms will be rigid with the rods"12 a1'1dtli e table top 14;. The weights 16 thus serve as counterbalance weights and act to hold the table top in substantially horizontal position.
A reinforcing frame is spaced below the table top and has its opposite ends connected to the brackets 13. This frame comprises spaced rods 18 upon which are mounted spacing sleeves 19, the latter being connected by transverse bars 20.
Mounted upon the pivot rods 12 between the arms 15 and the adjacent ends of thebearings 11 are coiled springs 21, while coiled springs 22 are also mounted upon the rods 12 between the opposite ends of the bearings 10 and an adjusting nut 23. As the rods 12 are capable of longitudinal movement within the bearings 11, the table top will be permitted longitudinal movement, such movement being yieldingly resisted by the springs 21 and 22 so as to take up sudden shock or jar in this direction. In addition, by adjusting the nuts 23, the tension of the springs may be regulated so that a yieldable frictional engagement may be provided between the bearings 11 and the arms 15 to yieldingly resist pivotal movement of the table.
Pivotally mounted upon the standards 10 as shown at 24 are substantially U-shaped yokes 25, the arms of which are adapted to removably receive and engage the diametrically opposite sides of the weights 16, so that if desired pivotal movement of the table top may be prevented. By moving the yokes upon the pivots 24 their arms may be engaged with or disengaged from the weights, handles 26 being provided upon the yokes for convenience of operation.
Th invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. A table comprising spaced standards, a top, pivot rods rotatably mounted in the standards and secured to the top whereby the latter may be moved pivotally, a counterbalance weight rigid with the top whereby the latter will be held substantially horizontal and means pivotally mounted upon the standards and engageable with the weights to hold the top against pivotal movement.
2. A table comprising spaced standards, a top, pivot rods rotatably mounted in the standards and secured to the top whereby the latter may be moved pivotally, a counterbalanc weight rigid with the top whereby the latter will be held substantially horizontal and yokes pivotally secured to the standards and adapted to receive the weights to hold the top against pivotal movement.
3. A table comprising spaced standards, a top, pivot rods rotatably mounted in the standards and secured to the top whereby the latter may be moved pivotally, a counterbalance weight rigid with the top whereby the latter will be held substantially horizontal, springs for yieldingly resisting pivotal movement of the top and means whereby tension of the springs may be regulated.
4. A table comprising spaced standards, a top, pivot rods secured to the top and mounted in the standards for longitudinal and pivotal movement, means for yieldingly resisting longitudinal movement and counterbalance weights rigid with thetop to hold the latter in substantially horizontal position.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
VINCENT FIORITO.
