Description

W. L. BORATE SUPPORT FOR INCANDESCENT LAMBS Oct.
Filed April 16 1925 Patented Oct. 20, 1925.
- UNITED STATES WILLIAM LOUIS BORATE, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
SUIIPORT FOR INCANDESCENT LAMIPS.
Application filed April 16, 1925.
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, \VILLIAM Lotus Bona'rn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for Incandescent Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to supports for incandescent lamps and an object thereof is to provide simple and inexpensive construction which may be employed for sup porting an incandescent lamp arranged on the end of a cord so that the bulb may be held in a fixed position, projecting upwardly from the socket.
To this and other ends, the invention consis'ts of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Fig. l is a plan view of the support with parts broken away;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22, Fig. 1, showing the lamp in position with a shade on the shade support;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on the line 8-3, Fig. 1;
Fig. 4; is a fragmentary detail view showing the connection between the lamp supporting ring and the legs; and
Fig. 5 is a side view of another embodiment of the invention.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention there is employed a lamp engaging member comprising, in this instance, a ring 1 split at 2 to resiliently engage about the socket 3 of an electric incandescent lamp 4-. This ring has arms extending radially therefrom and formed by bending the wire stock or strip from which the ring is made to provide loops which add also to the resiliency of the ring. These radial loops 5 have the two longitudinally extending portions thereof wrapped with a piece of sheet material to provide sleeves, as at 6, and between the two longitudinally extending portions, the sheet material is bent into a sleeve 7 lying to one side of the sleeves 6 surrounding the two longitudinally extending portions 5. This sleeve is adapted to receive a-portion of a support for the lamp holder.
One of such supports is shown in Figs. 1 to 4:, inclusive, and comprises a leg em- Serial no. 23,516.
bodying, in this instance, two sections 8 and 9, connected together in telescoping relation by a resilient double sleeve 10, which re ceives both of the portions 8 and 9 and holds them in an adjusted position in such sleeve while permitting the adjustment of the sleeve on both portions to vary the length of the leg or support. The upper end of the portion 9, in this instance, has two parallel portions 11 and 12, preferably lying an obtuse angle to the length of the support and connected by a bend 1 5. The portion 12 is adapted to pass through the sleeve T and isv greater in diameter than the distance between the sleeve 6, while the portion 11 is adapted to fit partially in the space between the sleeves (5, so that a bracing relzv tion with the sleeves 6 is established. When the lamp is in the socket, the legs or supports cannot be removed or become accidentally displaced due to the fact that in removing them, they must move inwardly into the space occupied by the socket 3. In other words the lamp socket acts as a looking means for holding the legs or supports to the lamp holder.
The lamp holder also acts as a support for a lamp shade holder, which comprises a ring 14 supporting the shade 15 and formed from the same piece of wire from which the lamp holder 1 is formed, being supported above the lamp holder by an upright portion 16 extending from the ring 1 to one side of the split tube upwardly and inwardly at 17 to the ring 14.
instead of supporting the lamp holder by the legs shownin Figs. 1 to 4, supports 18 may be employed fitted in the outer ends of the sleeves 7 and having downwardly turned ends 19. These supports are adapted to rest upon the upper edge of a vase 20, as shown in Fig. 5, the downwardly turned portion preventing the lateral displacement of the lamp holder on the vase, the cord, of course, in this instance, passing into the vase through the top thereof between the supports.
From the foregoing it will be seen that there has been provided an incandescent lamp support having a resilient ring adapted to be clamped about the socket of an incandescent lamp and provided with radially extending portions with which legs or supports are adapted to be detachably engaged. These radially extending portions are formed by loops in a piece of wire which also forms the lamp holding ring. Each of these loops support to one side of the plane thereof a sleeve in which the supporting devices engage, this sleeve opening' at opposite ends so that the supporting):' devices may enter from eith r end. One set of the SHlEPOEiinn" devices has two parallel portions connected by a bend so that when one of. these parallel portions passed through the slee 'e from the inner end thereof, the other will engage with the underside oi the loop. This connection between the supports is held in :1 locked condition by the socket of the elccvic lrenp or bulb fitting: in the lump supper ring.
