JOSEPH' FALCONE, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
communion nrinc'rnio SHADE HOLDER.
Application filed March 20, 1924:. Serial N0. 700,491.
1 all who-m it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn: FALCONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Electric Shade Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lighting fixtures and more particularly to that class of devices adapted tolock over the socket of an electrically operated. bulb so as to support a globe or other shade over said bulb, said device being hereinafter called a shade holder.
Among the objects of my invention is to provide a shade holder adapted to detachahly engage at its upper portion with a cover for said socket, said cover being so arranged as to materially improve the appearance of the entire lighting fixture when placed in position over said socket and engaged with said shade holder.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a construction which is easy to operate, neat and attractive in appearance, entirely dependable, and profitable from a manufacturing standpoint.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and while the invention is not restricted to the exact details of construction disclosed or suggested herein, still for the purpose of illustrating a practical embodiment thereofreference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 shows the bulb socket and a cross section of the shade holder, with the shade in outline.
Fi g. 2 is a view of the socket and the shade holder, and a cross section of the socket cover.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken along the line 33 of Fig. 2. v
The shade holder 1 has an annular head 2 from which extends inward-the horizontal extension 3. which bears the circular loop or fold section l The inner lower portion of this loop is threaded as at 5 to receive the male thread 6 of the socket 7, and thence said inner part of the told is flared upward and outward to admit freely the socket. The
lower portion of the shade holder comprises cylindrical flange 8 whose rim is reinforced as at 9. Set in the walls of this flange are bushings 10 threaded to receive the screws 11 which are adapted to enter the about said opening to allow the top 14 to cover over the socket collar 16. The cover has ahead 17, terminating in a segment 18 adapted to close over the loop or fold 4. The segment bears bushings 10 threaded to receive screws 11, the ends of which bear upon the concave portion of the loop, so as to hold said cover and shade holder in fixed relative position.
It will of course be evident that the shade holder may be used alone, the cover being added when additional ornamentation is re quired.
Particular attention is directed toward the unique and simplified construction of the shade holder. For my shade holder comprises in unitary construction the loop or fold 4, which is not only ornamental but affords a means for attaching the cover 13 thereto and while ithas on its inner lower portion a thread 5 for receiving the socket 7, yet has been so arranged as to allow easy insertion of the socket into said thread. lVithout being limited as to function, the number of parts has been reduced to a minimum in which respect the superiority of my shade holder over the prior art is evident. It will of course be under stood that the improved shade holder set forth herein may not only be made of difterent specific designs so long as the purposes of the invention are carried out, but also in any suitable various or standard sizes according to the parts intended to co operate therewith. While obviously the socket attachment portion will ordinarily remain of uniform size, the shade holding attachment flange may be made of various sizes according to the diameter of the globe or shade to be hung therefrom.
The construction disclosed herein has other important advantages especially from a manufacturing standpoint, since the device lends itself to be made as an entirety by simple and rapid processes such as spinning, the cost of manufacture being thereby greatly reduced. Furthermore, the shade holder does not have to be assembled from a number of parts, thus eliminating a large part of the labor cost. hen made by a process as indicated, the device is strong and durable as well as of neat appearance. But I desire to particularly point out that I have devised a shade holder which can be constructed as above described and which can be supported either by connection to the bulb socket or to the socket cover in a neat and eflicient manner, and so present a neat finished appearance in either adaptation.
I claim:
1. As an. article of manufacture, a lamp shade holder having a central annular folded portion having inner and outer spaced parts and a rolled loop connecting them at the top, the inner part having its lower end internally threaded to receive the correspondingly threaded part ot a bulb socket projected downward through the folded portion, while the top rolled connecting loop aforesaid is flared outward to insure ready insertion of the socket and to provide with said outer part an annular concavity beneath the rolled loop for engagement of a socket cover.
2. A one-piece electric lamp metal shade holder comprising curved means for the di rect suspension thereof from a socket cover, said means being concentric with said holder and formed as a continuation of the main tially a continuation of the curved means aforesaid and formed inwardly thereof and 'III opposite direction thereto.
In testimony whereof I a'HiX my s1gna ture.
JOSEPH FALCONE.
