To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK C. MAI:- QUARDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Brooklyn, in the city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in inking Mechanisms for Printing Machines, of which the follow ing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
My invention relates to inking mechanisms for printing machines, and more particularly to an inking mechanism adapted to have movement in its entirety with relation to the form or plate cylinder, a construction requiring adjustment of the inking rollers in relation to the. distributing roller, as Well as to the form or plate upon the cylinder.
l-leretofore in mechanisms of the character to which my invention relates, adjustment means have been provided by which the ink ing rollers applying the ink to the form or plate have been capable of adjustment with relation to the distributing roller co-operating therewith by a movement substantially radially of saiddistributing roller, andof a rectilineal adjnstmentat an angle to a radius oft-he form or plate cylinder.
With such mechanisms, during the makeready of a press, considerable difficulty has been experienced in securing the proper adjustment of the inkingjrollers, since when such rollers are iiroperly as to the distributing roller, there Was ordinarily a loss of such adjustment when subsequently adjusting the inking rollers to the plate upon the form or plate cylinder. This condition required repeated trials and readjustments to secure a proper relation of the inking rollers to the form or plate, and also to the distributing roller co-operating therewith, and could be secured only by repeatedly moving the carriage carrying the inking mechanism so as to bring the inking rollers into and out of engagement with the form or plate, andthe exercise of a high degree 0' s :illby the ressman.

In the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, I employ two sets of ink ing; rollers receiving ink from different founts through the usual sequence of cuttin and distributing rollers. Each set of inking rollers and their associated parts, is an exact duplicate of the other, except as to minor changes of design, so that a description of but one set is essential.
The detailed construction of the carriage and the manner of moving same toward or from the impression cylinder is immaterial to my present invention, which merely contemplates such a movement aside from the mechanical expedients adopted in securing same.
In the drawings, I have shown at a fragmentary portion of such a carriage omitting all of the distributing rollers except the one co-operating directly with the inking rollers, which distributing roller is shown at 11. The arbor of the roller 11 is mounted in bearings directly in the frame of the carriage 10 and has no movement in .relation thereto. The inking rollers 12 and 13 are adapted to operatively engage the distributing roller 11 and to convey ink therefrom to the printing surface upon the form or plate cylinder indicated at 14.
Said inking rollers 12 and 18 are so mounted as to have movement radially of the'distributing roller 11 to permit their adjustment to secure the proper co-relation betweensaid rollers to insure the desired transfer of ink from the distributing roller to the inking rollers, said inking rollers also being adapted to be adjusted circumferentially of said distributing roller to permit their being brought into the proper inking relation to the form or plate upon the cylinder 14, without disturbing their adjustment with relation to the roller 11.
The above operative effect is secured by providing a bearing 15 for the inking roller 12 having a screw-threaded stem 16 slidably mounted in suitable bearings 17 and 18, said stem having an adjusting nut 19 mounted thereon intermediate said bearings so as to permit the bearing 15 to be moved toward and from the axis of the distributing roller 11 by a rectilineal movement radially oi said axis.
The bearings 17 and 18 are carried by a frame 20 mounted to rotate or oscillate about an axis concentric with that of the shaft of the roller 11, thus permitting the bearing 15 for the inking roller 12 to he moved circumferentially of said distributing roller 11, a movement which will not disturb the relation of the rollers 12 and 1 3 to the roller 11 as determined by the adjustment of the nut 19.
Slidably mounted in a lug 21 upon the carriage 10, is a screw 22 having mounted thereon adjustment nuts 23 and 21- arranged upon opposite sides of, and bearing upon, the lug 21. One end of this screw bears against the frame 20 so that rotary movement may be imparted to, or permitted in, said frame through the medium of the nuts 23 and 24: according to the direction of movement which it is necessary for the frame to have to bring the rollers 12 and 1?) into the proper engagement with the form or plate upon the cylinder 14.
The screw 22 need not be, and in the form of the invention is not, directly connected with the oscillatory frame 20, since, as will, fully appear hereinafter, under ordinary conditions said screw would serve merely as a limit stop to develop and define the desired pressure of the inking rollers upon the form or plate cylinder with the actuation of the carriage.
To permit the locking of the frame 20 in its adjusted position, 1 provide said franc with a segmental slot therein through which passes a set screw 26 cooperating with the side frame of the carriage 10.
The arbors of the inking roller 13 are mounted in a closed bearing 27 instead of in an open bearing corresponding with the bearing 15, said bearing being adapted to have movement radially of the roller 11 through the medium of a screw 28 mounted in bearings 29 and 30 between which is mounted an adjusting nut 31. These bearings are carried by a frame 32 mounted to rotate or oscillate about an axis concentric with the axis of the shaft of the distributing roller 11, and with the axis of the frame 20, said frames 20 and 32 being mounted side by side as shown more clearly in Fig.
The frame has associated therewith an adjusting screw 33 mounted in a lug 3 carried by the carriage 10, said screw haring mounted thereon a lock. nut 35. The frame 32 is also provided with a segmental slot 36 corresponding in function with the slot 25 having associated therewith a set screw 37 corresponding in function with the screw 26.

the same operative effect is secured with in construction and mode of operation with that above described, and corresponding reference numerals therefore are applied thereto without a further description of this second inking mechanism, which, so far as this invention is concerned, may be used, or not, as desired.
The operation of the herein described mechanism is substantially as follows The carriagelO and theinking mechanisms carried thereby are moved away from the cylinder 1 L during the makeready of a. press to permit access to the form or plate cylinder, or its associated impression cylinder not shown in the drawings, or during the run ofa press, this carriage is sometimes moved away ml the cylinder for the purpose of inspection or to permit readjustmentof the plate, or for other purposes.
During themakeready of the press, clean inking and distributing rollers are mounted in the machine, which involves proper adjustment of-'these rollers with relation to each other well as to the printing surface upon the form or plate cylinder.
In an inking mechanism made in accordance with my invention, the inking rollers 12and13' are first adjusted so as to be brought into the prpper engagement with the associated distributing roller 11, by rotating the adjustingnut 19 or 31 to move the bearing or 27 radially of the roller 11 until the proper bearing contact secured between the said inking rollers and the said distributingroller. When this adjustment is once secured, it is permanent to the extent that it is not disturbed by subsequent adjustment of the inkingrollcrs to secure the proper relation thereof to the printingsurface upon the cylinder 14.
l l hcn this adjustment is secured, the screws 22 and 33 are moved away from the frames and 32 respectively and the set screws 26 and 37 are loosened, thus permitting freedom of rotary or oscillatory movement of the saidframes about an axis concentric with thatof the distributing roller ill so that the inking rollers 12 and 13 may be moved to ensure their proper positioning with relation to the formor plate upon the cylinder 14 by a movement circumferentially of the distributing roller 11 without a loss of the established contact relation between said inking rollers .and said distributing roller.
When the parts are in this position, the carriagecarrying the frame 10 may be moved: toward thecylinder 14, the" final movement of saidcarriage engaging the inking rollers 12 and 13 with the printing-surface upon said cylinder.
The freedom of movement ofthe frame 20 will always be found to bring the roller 12 into engagement with the printing surface, although the roller 13 may not be so brought into such engagement. If it be necessary to adjust either roller 12 or 13 to secure the proper engagement thereof with said surface, this is secured by means of the screw or 33 which is so actuated as to impart the desired movement to the frames 20 and:
32 and of the inking rollers mounted therein respectively, circumferentially of the roller 11, the arc of movement of said rollers causing them to approach, or permitting them to rccede from, the cylinder 1%, as determined by the direction of movement of said screws.
l i hen the proper set of the inking rollers has been secured in the manner above de' scribed, the set screws 26 and 37. may be tightened so as to prevent subsequent moven'ient of said fr m elation to the frame of the carriage 10 so that thereafter. the carriage 10 may be so moved as to bring the inking rollers out of the operative relation with the printing surface without disturbing the adjustment, since upon restoration of said rollers to their operative position, their engagement with the printing surface will be the same under all conditions.
The adjusting screw 22 serves as. a limit stop to define the oscillatory movement of the roller 12 uponengagement with the form or pla c upon the cylinder 14:, and will thus have a tendency to control the pressure between said roller and the form or plate upon the cylinder let as the carriage 10 reaches the limit of its movement toward said cylinder. The. screw 86 will have the: same eliect as to the roller The action as to each of these screws is supplemented by the set screws 26 and 37.
Since the adjustn'ient ofv the inl'ring rollers with relation to the printing surface based upon the triangular relation of the axes ofthe distributing roller 11 and the inking rollers 12 and 13, and the capability of movement of the rollers 12 and 1?, cir cumferentially of the roller 11, which will permit said inking rollers to adjust themselves or be adjusted to the curvature of the printing surface, it is apparent that a similar effect to that herein described might be secured by having the frames 20 and 32 so associated to act as a unit, although any nicety of the proportioning and the dimension of parts and the finishing thereof, is avoided by employing independently rotatable frames under independent controls for-adjustment purposes. Furthern'iore this construction permits great nicety in the adjustment of the inking 'rollerss with irelation to the printing surface and avoids any necessity for exactitude in the diameters of the inking rollers.
Having described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to have protected by Letters Patent, is
1. An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein a carriage adapted to have movement toward and from a form or plate cylinder, a distributing roller mounted therein, an inking roller associated with said distributing roller and adapted to be brought into ,and out of en gagement with the form or plate upon said cylinder as determined by the movement of said carriage, means for imparting movement to said inking roller radially of said distributing roller to secure the proper relation of said rollers to each other, and means for imparting movement to said inking roller circumferentially ofsaid distributing roller, and towards or from said form or plate cylinder to secure the proper relation of said inking roller to the form or plate, independently of said first named means.
2. An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein a carriage adapted to have movement toward and from a form or plate cylinder, a distributing roller mounted therein, a frame mountedto have rotatable movement about an axis concentric with that of said distributing roller, a bearing mounted upon said frame, means for imparting movement to said bearing radially of said distributing roller, an inking roller mounted in said bearing in engagement with said distributing roller, said inking roller being adapted to be brought into and out of engagement with the form or plate upon a cylinder with the movement of said carriage, and means for imparting movement to said frame circumferentially of said distributing roller to position said inking roller properly with relation to the former plate, said last named means being operative independently of the means adjusting said inking roller.
3. An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying thereina carriage adapted to have movement toward and from a form or plate cylinder, a distributing roller mounted therein, a frame mounted to have rotatable movement about an axis concentric with that of said distributing roller, a bearing, supporting means for said bearing extending radially of said distributing roller, whereby said bearing is mounted upon said frame, means co-operating with said supporting means for imparting movement to said bearing radially of said distributing roller, an inking roller mounted in said bearing in engagement with said distributing roller, said inking roller being adapted to be brought into and out of engagement withthe form or plate upon a cylinder with the movement of said carriage, and means for imparting movement to said frame ciroumferentially of said distributing roller to position said inking roller properly with relation to the form or plate, said last named means being operative independently of the means adjusting said inking roller.

An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein a carriage adapted to have movement toward and from a form or plate cylinder, a distributing roller mounted therein, a. frame mounted to have rotatable movement about an axis concentric with that of said distributing roller, bearings upon said frame, an inking roller hearing, a screw-threaded stem therefor mounted in said first named bearings, an adjusting nut carried by said screw threaded stem between said bearings, whereby said inking roller hearing may have movement imparted thereto radially of said distributing roller, an inking roller mounted in said bearing in engagement with said distributing roller, said inking roller being adapted to be brought into and out of engagement with the form or plate upon a cylinder with the movement of said carriage, and means for imparting movement to said frame circumferentially of said distributing roller to position said inking roller properly with relation to the form or plate, said last named means being operative independently of the means adjusting said inking roller.

An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein a carriage adapted to have movement toward and from a form or plate cylinder, a distributing roller mounted therein, a frame mounted to have rotatable movement about an axis concentric with that of said distributing roller, a bearing mounted upon said frame, means whereby movement may be imparted to said frame radially of said distributing roller, an inking roller mounted in said bearing in engagement with said distributing roller, said inking roller being adapted to be brought into and out of engagement with the form or plate upon a cylinder with the movement of said carriage, and a screw carried by said carriage and acting upon said frame eccentrically of its axis, whereby movement may be imparted to said f'ame circumferentially of said distributing roller to position said inking roller properly with relation to the form or plate independently of the means adjusting said inking roller.

An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein a carriage adapted to have movement toward and from a form or plate cylinder, a distributing roller mounted therein, a frame mounted to have rotatable movement about an axis concentric with that of said distributing roller, bearings upon said frame, an inking roller the form or plate-upon a cylinder with the n'iovement of said carriage, and a screw carried by aid carriage and acting upon said frame eccentrically of its axis, whereby movement may be imparted to said frame 0ircumferentially of said distributing roller to position said inking roller properly with relation to the form or plate independently of the means adjusting said inkingroller.

An inking mechanismfor printing machines embodying therein a carriage adapted to have movement toward and from a form or plate cylinder, a-distributing roller mounted therein a frame mounted to have rotatable movement about an axis concentric with that of said distributing roller, bearings upon said frame, an inking roller bear ing. a screw-threaded stem therefor mounted in said first named bearings, an adjustingnntcarried by said screw-threaded stem between said bearings, whereby movement may be imparted to said inking roller hearing radially of said distributing roller, an inking roller mounted in said'bearing in enga gement with said distributing roller, said inking roller being adapted to be brought into andout ofengagement with the form or plate upon a cylinder with themovement of said carriage, a screw carried by said carriage and acting upon said frame eccentrically of its axis, whereby movement may be inu'iartedto said frame circumferentially of said distributing roller-to position said inking roller properly with relation to the form or plate independently of the means adjusting said inking roller, said frame having an opening therein, and a set screw passing throughsaid opening-and engaging said carriage and said frame, whereby said frame may be set in any adjusted position.
8. An inking mechanism for printing machines embodyingtherein a carriage adapt ed to have movement toward and from a form or plate cylinder, a distributing roller mounted therein, a plurality of inking rollers associated with said distributing roller and adapted to be brought into andout of engagement with the form or plate cylinder as detern'iined by the movement of said'carriage, means associated with each of said inking rollers whereby movement may be imparted thereto radially of said distributing roller to secure the proper relation of each of said inking rollers to said distributing roller, and independently operative means operative upon said inking rollers respectively, whereby movement may be 1mparted to either of said inkmgrolls circumferentially of said distributing roller, to ensure theproper relation of each of said inking rollers with the form-of plate cylinder independently of the radial adjustment thereof.
9. Air-inking mechanism for printing machines eii'diodying therein a carriage adapted. to have movement toward and from a form or plate cylinder, a distributing roller mounted therein, a plurality of frames each capable of movement independent of the other about an axis concentric with that of said distributing roller, a bearing uponeach of said frames, means for imparting movement to each of said bearings radially of said distributing roller, an inking roller mounted in each of said bearings in engagement with said distributing roller, said inking rollers being adapted to be brought into and out of engagement with the form or plate upon a cylinder with the movement of said carriage, and means for imparting niovez'uent to said frames respectively circumferentially of said distributing roller to position said inking rollers properly with relation to the form orplate, said last named means being operative independently of the adiusting means operative upon said inking rollers.-
10. An inking mechanism for pr nting machines embodying therein a carriage adapted to have movement toward and from a form or plate cylinder, a distributing roller mounted therein, a plurality of frames each capable of movement independent of the other about an axis concentric with that of said distributing roller, a bearing upon each of said fra-mes, supporting means for each of said bearing-rs extend ing radially of said distributing roller, whereby said bearings are mounted upon said frames, means co-operating with said supporting means whereby either of said bearings may have movement imparted thereto radially of said distributing roller independently of the other, an inking roller mounted in each of said hearings in engagement with said distributing roller, said inking rollers being adapted to be brought into and out of engagement with the form or plate upon a cylinder with the movement-of said :ar'riage, and means for in'iparting movement to said frames respectively circumferentially of said distributing roller position said inking rollers properly with relation to the form or plate, said last named means being operative independently of the adjusting means operative upon said inkii g rollers.
11. An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein a carriage adapted to have movement toward and from roller mounted therein,
a form or plate cylinder, a distributing roller mounted therein, a plurality of frames each capable of movement independ ent of the other about an axis concentric With that of said distributing roller, a plurality of bearings upon said frames, inking roller bearings, a screw-threaded stem for eachvof said bearings mounted in said first named bearings respectively, an adjusting nut carried by each of said screw-threaded stems between said bearings, whereby said inking roller bearings may each have movement imparted thereto radially of said distributing roller, an inking roller mounted in ca h of said bearings in engagement with said distributing roller, said inking rollers being adapted to be brought into and out of engagement with the form or plate upon a cylinder with the movement of said carriage, and means for imparting movement to said frames respectively circumferentially of said distributing roller to position said inking rollers properly with relation to the form or plate, said last named means being operative independently of the adjusting means operative upon said inking rollers. i

An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein a carriage adapted to have movement toward and from a form or plate cylinder, a distributing roller mounted therein, a plurality of frames each capable of movement independ ent of the other about an axis concentric with that of said distributing roller, a hearing upon each of said frames, means for imparting movement to each of said frames radially of said distributing roller, an ink- 'ing roller mounted in each of said bearings in engagement with said distributing roller, said inking rollers being adapted to be brought into and out of engagement with the form or plate upon a cylinder with the movement of said carriage, and screws carried by said carriage and acting upon said frames respectively eccentrically of their axes, whereby movement may be imparted to each of said frames circumferentially of said distributing roller to position said inking rollers properly with relation to the form or plate cylinder.
13. An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein a carriage adapted to have movement toward and from a form or plate cylinder, a distributing a plurality of frames each capable of movement independ ent of the other about an axis concentric with that of said distributing roller, a plurality of bearings upon said frames, inking roller bearings, a screwthreaded stem for each of said bearings mounted in said first named bearings respectively, an adjusting nut carried by each of said screw-threaded stems between said bearings, whereby said inking roller bearings may each have movement imparted thereto radially of said distributingroller, an inking roller mounted in each of said bearings in engagement with said distributing roller, said inking rollers being adapted to be brought into and out of engagement with the form or plate upon a cylinder with the movement of said carriage, and crews carried by said carriage and acting upon said f ames respectively ecc-entrically of their axes, whereby movement may be imparted to each of said frames cireumferentially of said distributing roller to position said inking rollers properly with relation to the form or plate cylinder.
14. An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein a carriage adapted to have movement toward and from a form or plate cylinder, a distributing roller mounted therein, a phi 'ality of frames each capable of movement independent of the other about an axis concentric with that of said distributing roller, a plurality of bearings upon said frames, inking roller bearings, a screw-threaded stem for each of said bearings mounted in said first named bearings respectively, an adjusting nut carried by each of said screw-threaded stems between said bearings, whereby movement may be imparted to each of said inking roller bearings radially of said distributing roller, an inking roller mounted in each of said bearings in engagement with said distributing roller, said inking rollers being adapted to be brought into and out of engagement with the form or plate upon a cylinder with the movement of said carriage, screws carried by said carriage and acting upon said frames respectively errontrically of their axes, whereby movement may be imparted to each of said frames circumferentially of said distributing roller to position said inking rollers properly with relation to the form or plate cylinder, each of said frames having an opening therethrough, and set screws passing through said openings respectively and engaging said carriage and said frames respec ively, whereby said frames may be set in any adjusted position.
