The frame of my machine comprises a substantially rectangular base 1 having forwardly and rearwardly extendin feet, and vertical side members 2, which sioe members are connected by horizontal cross members or braces 3. Rotatably mounted on said side members is a main shaft 4, upon which is fixed a drum or axle 5 which has longitudinal depression, preferably a ii-shaped groove, in its periphery. Mounted upon said frame or axle 5 is a series of type wheels 6 or other suitable type carrying members. The periphery of each Wheel is divided into a number of equal surfaces separated by intervening V-shaped indentations. Each of these surfaces (except one, which is left blank) is provided with a type or printing character. Preferably, each wheel is the counterpart of its fellows. Each of these type wheels has a radial hole therein, in which is mounted a pin 7 Whose inner end is made of conical shape to adapt it to fit in the V shaped groove of the drum or axle. Back of said pin is a coiled spring 8 which bears at one end against said pin and bears at its other end against a screw-threaded plug 9 which cooperates with an internal screw-thread provided therefor in the outer end of the hole in said wheel. By turning the screw plug, the pressure on the pin may be varied at pleasure and the force required to disengage said pin from its counterpart groove is varied accord ingly.
In the normal position of the parts, the locking pin on each of the type wheels is in engagement with said V-shaped groove in the axle. When the axle or drum is rotated, all the type wheels are normally turned therewith. l/Vhen the drum has been turned to bring a particular type Wheel into a desired position, that particular wheel is locked in that position, and so long as said Wheel is locked, the movement of the drum or axle has no effect thereon. The locking device comprises a lever 10 for each type wheel. These levers are fulcrumed on rod or bar 11 mounted on the framework parallel with the drum or axle. Each lever has tooth or pawl 12 on the edge thereof of a size and shape to fit in the indentations in the periphery of the corresponding type wheel and thus serve to osition the wheel accurately as well as to ock it. The end of the lever is arcuate and line 9-. of S but with the rock lever and I has two notches or indentations therein arranged to cooperate with a spring-actuated pin 13 provided therefor on the frame. One of said notches is in position to interlock with said pin when the corresponding pawl 12 engages an indentation in the periphery of the type wheel and the other notch in said lever is in position to engage said pin when the pawl is tilted clear of the type wheel. The end of each lever is provided with a handle or finger grip 14 for manipulating it to engage with the type wheel. Each lever also has a depending projection: i=5 which is offset and extends inwardly beyond the periphery of its type wheel. On the face of each type wheel is a pin or stud l'fiwhich is close enough to the periphery thereof to bear against said projection, whereby said projection constitutes a stop for limiting the rotation of the type w-h eels. Mounted in the side members of the frame parallel with the fulcrum of the locking levers adjacent to the projections thereon is a bar or rod 17, whose end is provided with a crank arm 18 equipped with a handle 19 for manipulating it. This bar is preferably of semicircular section and is so positioned that when the locking levers are in engagement with their respective type wheels, their edges bear against the flat surface of said bar. WVhen the bar is rotated by means of its hand crank, it acts as a cam working against said projections to turn said levers out of engagement with their respective wheels and restore them to their normal positions.
Mounted on one of the side members of the frame is a stub shaft 20, on which is mounted a curved rack or sector 21 whose teeth mesh with the teeth of a pinion 22 fixed 011 the drum or axle 5. The outer end of this stub shaft is provided with a crank arm 23 having a handle 24 thereon, and with an outwardly extending portion 25 which is turned inwardly to overlap the margin of the side member of the frame and constitute a pointer. The front and upper portion of this side member are'made in the form of a circular are upon which is mounted strip of metal 26 bearing characters corresponding to those of the several type wheels. These characters are arranged in the inverse order of those on the printing wheels and are so spaced and positioned that the pointer registers with each character as the like character on a type wheel fixed to the axle is in printing position.
The operation of setting up an item is as follows: Normally all the type wheels are locked to the axle by means of their spring ins engaging in the groove of the axle. buppose the item to be set up is A 425. The hand crank is turned untilthe pointer registers with the number 5 on the indicator, whereupon the locking lever of the'first type wheel to the right is manipulated to move its pawl into'engagement with the indentation of the type wheel. Thereupon, the hand crank is again. turned until the pointer registers with the character 2 of the indicator, whereupon the locking lever of the second type wheel is manipulated to lock said wheel. Then the hand lever is again moved until the pointer registers with the character 4, whereupon the locking lever of the third wheel is manipulated to lock said wheel. Then the hand crank is again turned until the pointer registers with the character A of the indicator, whereupon the locking lever of the fifth type wheel is manipulated to lock said fifth wheel. The hand crank is then turned back to normal position. During these operations, the wheels that are not locked move with the axle, whereas those that are locked remain locked until intentionally disengaged. As the fourth wheel was not looked, a space is left between the character A and the number 425 and the item can be printed as often as desired without resetting the machine. So, too, the wheels may be locked in any order that may be desired. When it is desired to restore the machine to normal position, the hand crank 18 is turned, whereupon the bar 17 bears against the projections on the locking levers to disengage said locking levers from the indentations of the type wheel, whereupon the hand crank 23 is turned until the studs or pins on the respective wheels bear against the projections on the several locking levers, in which position the spring pins on the wheels engage the longitudinal groove of the axle. The ink supply is preferably an absorbent pad 27 removably supported by the side members of the frame. This absorbent pad is preferably mounted on the underside of a partially cylindrical plate 28 of resilient metal arranged concentric with the type wheels; One end of said plate is turned down and fixed to a fiat bar 29 whose ends lit in slotted studs 30 provided therefor on the end members of the frame. As illustrated in Fig. 4-, one or both ofsaid studs has its bottornopen and is provided with a spring member 31 which is adapted to close said bottom. and constitute a support for said bar. This spring member is provided with a finger piece 1 32 whereby it may be pulled laterally out of alinement with said slot and thus permit the mounting or dismounting of the bar which supports the ink pad.
Pivotally mounted on the shaft 4 beyond the type wheelsis a pair of arms 33 which are connected or framed together by a cross member 34. The ends of these arms are slotted longitudinally to receive the spindles of an inkroller 35. In order to allow movement of said ink roller longitudinally of said arms, its spindles are fitted into the eyes of eyebolts 36 which extend through perforated lugs 37 provided therefor on said arms. The inner ends of these eyebolts are screwits end for manipulating it.
threaded and provided with nuts 38. Around the inner portions of these eyebolts are coiled springs 39 whose outer ends bear against the perforated lugs and whose inner ends bear against the adjusting nuts, whereby the pressure on the inking roller against the type wheel may be varied at pleasure and whereby the type wheel is permitted to move outwardly and inwardly to a limited extent.
The ink roller is provided at its ends with rollers or disks 40 which travel on tracks 41 provided therefor on the frame of the machine. These tracks are arranged to keep the ink roller clear of the type of the respeci tive type wheels except for the space of a sin le type, wiich space corresponds to the printing position. At this point, there is a sufficient depression 42 on the track to permit the ink roller to bear against the type. The portion of the track close to the inking pad is arranged to cause the roller to travel over said pad. In the normal position of the parts the ink roller is far removed from the inking pad but is brought into operative relation therewith by the manipulation of the printing lever hereinafter mentioned.
Pivotally mounted on the base portion of f the main frame is substantially rectangular tympan frame 43. On the upper side of the outer marginal portion of this tympan frame is mounted a tympan er whose sides are inclined or pyannidal. On the upper side of the tympan frame are perforated lugs 45 in which is mounted a rod or pintle Pivotally mounted on this red is a clamping plate or memher 47 which is normally held downwardly by springs 48 coiled around said rod and bearing against said plate. The marginal portion of said pivotal plate extends beyond the tympan and is provided in its marginal portion with a slot 49 in position to register with said tympan and of such size that its edges bear against the inclined sides of said tympan. Mounted on the tympan frame is a rock lever 50 provided with a knob or handle 51 for manipulating it. The short arm 52 of this lever is positioned under the clamping plate and operates as a cam to raise said clamping plate against the force of its springs when the longer arm is manipulated.
The shaft 53 to which the tympan frame is fixed is provided with. a crank handle 5 at The parts are so designed that when the tympan frame is lifted, it will hear radially against the type that are in printing position; that is, the axis of the shaft 53 of the tympan frame is in or adjacent to a plane that is tangent to the type wheels at the point of printing.
As stated above, the frame or arms 83 which support the inking roller are pivotally mounted on the min shaft. This frame has rock arms 55 fixed thereto, and the rock,
arms are connected by pivotal links 56 to the respective ends of the tympan frame. By this arrangement, the movement of the tympan frame is transmitted through said links and the rock arms to swing the ink roller as hereinabove described. In order to secure the desired movement of the ink roller relative to the tympan frame, the links are preferably bent as illustrated in the drawing.
In operation, the tympan frame is normally in the horizontal position with the tympan projecting through the slot of the clamping member. in order to position the shoe lining or other article to be printed, the
- clamping member is raised by manipulation of the rock lever, whereupon the article is positioned on the tympan, the rock lever is then restored to its position, whereupon the spring of the clamping member forces said member downwardly stretching the article over the tympan and hinding it firmly against the pyramidal sides thereof. The hand crank is then manipulated to bring the tympan into contact with the type wheels, during which operation the ink roller is moved across the type that are in printing position and over the inking pad. Unless 5 the ink roller has been in service shortly prior to this operation, it will be necessary to repeat the operation in order to ink the type well. Upon the return stroke of the tympan frame, the ink roller is restored to its normal position and in returning again I inks the type wheel.
Qbviously my machine admits of considerable modification without departing from my invention, and therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the specific construction shown and described.
What I claim is:
i. A printing machine comprising a frame, an adjustable type carrying member mounted thereon and having a series of indentations on its periphery, means for adjusting said type carrying member, and means for retaining said type carrying member n adjustment, said retaining means comprising pawl pivotally mounted on said frame, said pawl being normally in inoperative relation to said type carrying member and arranged to be brought into engagement with said type carrying member, means for holding said pawl either in or away from engagement with said type carrying member, and means for manipulating said pawl.

3. A printing machine comprising a frame, an adjustable type carrying member moun.t ed thereon and having a series of indentations on its periphery, means for adjusting said type carrying member and means for retaining said type carrying memljier in ustment, said adjusting means comprising an axle having a longitudinal groove thereon, a spring pressed pin mounted on said type carrying member and arranged to yieidingly engage said groove, a stop for limiting th movement of said typo carrying member, and means for actuating said axle, said re taining means comprising a pawl pivotally mounted on said. frame and arranged to be brought into engagement with said type carrying member, means for holding said pavvl either in or away from engagement with said type carrying memli ,r, and means for manipulating Said pawl.
4. A printing machine comprising a frame, independently adjustable type carrying wheels mounted thereon each having a series of indentations in its periphery, means for adjusting said Wheels, and means for retaining said wheels in adjustment, said adjusting means comprising an axle having a longitudinal groove the sin, spring pressed pin mounted on each 0 said wheels and arranged to yieldingly engage said groove, a stop for limiting the movement of said Wheels and means for actuating said axle, said retaining means comprising a series of paivls pivotally mounted. on said frame and ranged to be brought into engagement With the respective Wheels, a spring pressed pin for each pawl mounted on said frame and arranged to hold said pawl either in or away from engagement with the corresponding Wheel, and means for manipulating said pawl.
5. A printing machine comprising a frame, a series of rotatable type Wheels mounted thereon, means for adjusting said type wheels either singly or together, means for retaining said type carrying members in adjustment, said means being normally in inoperative relation to said Wheels, respectively, stops for limiting the movement of said t pe carr ing members, respectively, and means for actuating said axle, said usting means comprising an axle having a longitudinal groove therein, spring pressed pins mounted on said type carrying members, respectively, and arranged to yieldingly engage said groove.
6. A printing machine comprising a frame, a series of rotatable type Wheels mounted thereon, means for adjusting said type Wheels either singly or together, means for retaining said type carrying members in adustment, stops for limiting the movement of said type carrying members, respectively, said adjusting means comprising an axle having a longitudinal groove therein, spring pressed pins mounted on said type carrying members, respectively, and arranged to yieldingly engage said groove, an d means for actuating said axle said actuating means comprising intermeshing toothed members and hand lever.
7. A printing machine comprising a frame, a series of adjustable type Wheels mounted thereon and each having on its periphery a series of indentations, means for adjusting said type carrying members and means for retaining said type carrying members in adjustment, said retaining means comprising a series of pawls pivotally mounted on said frame and arranged to be lz-rought into engagement with said typo Wheels, respec tivcly, but being normally in inoperative position, means for holding said paWls either in or away from engagement with said type Wheels, respectively, and means for manipulating said pawls.
8. A printing machine comprising a frame, a series of adjustable type Wheels mounted thereon and each having on its periphery a series of indentations, means for adjusting said type carrying members and means for retaining said type carrying members in adjustment, said retaining means comprising a series of pavrls pivotally mounted. on said frame and arranged to be brought into engagement With said type Wheels, respectively, means for holding said pawls either in or away from engagement With said type ivl'reels, respectively, and means for manipulating said pawls, said manipulating means comprising a restoring cam mounted on said frame in position to raise by one movement all of said pawls away from engagement with said type carrying members, respectively, and means for actuating said restoring cam.
9. A printing machine comprising a frame, a rotatably mounted axle thereon, a series of type Wheels rotatably mounted on said axle and individually yieidingly secured thereto, means for turning said aXlc, means for engaging and locking said type Wheels individually wherever adjusted, said locking means being normally in inoperative relation to said Wheels, and means for indicating the angular adjustment of said aide and means common to all of said locking means for disengaging them from their respective type Wheels 10. In printing machine, a main frame, a tymp an frame p ivotal'ly mounted on said main frame and comprising a base portion having a raised tympan ith pyramidal sides, a spring pressed Work-holding member pivotally mounted on said base portion and having a slot Whose edges are adapted to bear against the sides of said tympan, and a manually operable rock shaft arranged to oscillate said work-holding member.
11. A printing machine comprising a main frame, an adjustable type carrying member mounted therein, means for adjusting said type carrying member, means for retaining said type carrying member in adjustment, a tymp an frame movably mounted on said main frame, a tympan mounted on. said tympan frame, a spring actuated grip frame pivotally mounted on said tympan frame and having a slot therein adapted to fit over said tympan, means for raising said grip frame away from contact with said tympan.
12. A printing machine comprising a main frame, an adjustable type carrying member mounted thereon, means for adjusting said type carrying member, means for retaining said type carrying member in adjustment, a tympan frame movably mounted on said main frame, a tympan mounted on said tympan frame, a spring actuated grip frame pivotally mounted on said tympan frame and having a slot adapted to fit over said tympan, means for raising said grip frame away from contact with said tympan, said raising means comprising a rock shaft having a cam mounted thereon, and a hand lever for manipulating said rock shaft, and means for moving said tymp an frame into operative contact with said type carrying member.
13. A printing machine comprising a main frame, an adjustable type carrying member mounted thereon and an ink roller, brackets mounted on said main frame and having slots therein respectively, spring catches fastened to said brackets respectively and arranged to close said slots, a bar mounted in said slots and normally held in position by said spring catches, an ink pad frame mount ed on said bar and having thereon an ink pad.
14. In a printing machine, a main frame, a series of type wheels independently adjustably mounted thereon, an ink roller for inking said type wheels, an inking pad for said roller, and means for supporting said inking pad, said means comprising a curved resilient plate arranged substantially concentric with said wheels.
15. In a printing machine, a main frame, a series of type wheels independently adjustably mounted thereon, an ink roller for inking said type wheels, an inking pad for said roller, and means for supporting said. inking pad, said means comprising slotted lugs on the frame, a cross bar mounted in said lugs and a member mounted on said cross bar and having a pad mounted thereon, and a re movable member for closing one side of the slot for locking said bar therein.
16. In a printing machine, a main frame, a series of type wheels independently adjustably mounted thereon, an ink roller for inking said type wheels, an inking pad for said roller, and means for supporting said inking pad, said means comprising a cross bar mounted in slots provided therefor on the main frame and manually operable spring members adapted to lock said bar in said slot.
17. A printing machine comprising a rotatable axle, a plurality of type wheels independently rotatable on said axle and normally held in yielding engagement therewith, means for positively locking said wheels individually and manually operable means for resetting all of said locking means in normal position said locking means being normally disengaged from said wheels.
18. A printing machine comprising a rotatable axle, a pluralityof type Wheels inde pendently rotatable on said axle and normally held in yielding engagement therewith, a plurality of locking levers arranged to lock said wheels individually, and means for resetting said locking levers, said resetting means comprising a manually operable shaft having an eccentric portion arranged to bear against said locking levers.
