IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,786, dated October 13, 1874; application tiled July 22, 1874.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BOYD, of Drumore township, residing near Green P. O., in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Butter-Boxes, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to provide a strong, convenient butter-box, readily cleaned and kept sweet, by forming a removable partition into a slatted crib, provided with grooves for sliding trays or shelves, so that the space over said trays is on a level with the openings between the grooved slats of the crib or partition, and ope-n to an ice-chamber within the crib, from the top to the botttom of the box, constituting a combined butter box and cooler, specially adapted for marketing, in two compartments, with a door in front to each.
The accompanying drawings, with the letters of reference marked thereon', and a brief explanation, will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.
Figure l shows the box with the two side doors open, and the central lid on the top. Fig. 2 shows the. crib with its ends grooved, and sides open between the grooved slats; also, the central piece with its ledge for the grooves in the crib. Fig. 3 shows the ice box or chamber, and perforated raised shelf set lin the bottom; Fig. 4, the trays or sliding butter-shelves.
rlhe outer boxA may be of any desired size or material, with double walls and doors, having the intermediate spaces filled, as i'n There is a central opening on the top, to allow the crib and ice-chamber to be introduced to the bottom of the box, and covered closely by a hinged lid, B.
The crib is formed of end pieces F, which have dovetailed vertical grooves f, to admit the ledges c, made to tit, and which are affixed to the center of the inner face of the central brace-piece E of the box. These end pieces F of the crib are united by side slats D D, four of which are centrally grooved on their outer face; and there are corresponding grooves on the inner side walls of the box to admit the introduction of the trays or sliding shelves I' I, 011 which the prints of butter are arranged.-
The ice-chamber G, having ice laid upon the shelf H, is inserted into the open crib.
The crib or partition thus formed, with openings, allows the air over the trays within the box to come in direct contact with the sides of the ice-chamber, which extends from the top to the bottom of the box.
The front iiange, as in I, raised up so as to close the spacebetween the shelves, and
in I the front .flange or ledge of the same height as that in the rear, in the one case the high flange will exclude the warm air while the door is open, or some of the upper trays removed or sold out.
There is a decided advantage in forming the box 'in two departments, the central broad dividing-strip assisting greatly to strengthen the box, as well as to cover the ice-chamber, and provide the guide strip and support e for the crib, thereby combining the crib with the box.
By withdrawing the trays or shelves l I the crib and ice-chamber can be easily lifted out jointly, or the ice-chamber aloneA by the folding ring-handles g. When both are removed there is access to the whole interior of the box, so as to be easily cleaned, and kept perfectly sweet.
I am aware that butter-boxes having shelves and lids on top are used, and that refrigerators with a door or doors on the side are not new; such I do not claim. What I believe to be novel is the central ice-chamber, and open crib to fill the entire space between the front and rear walls, and between the shelves from top to bottom of the box, as herein shown and described; therefore The removable central partition, said partition constituting an open crib, having grooved ends F, and grooved side slats D D', for the' sliding trays or shelves I I', in combination with an ice' chamber, Gr IzI, the whole substantially constructed as and for the purpose set forth.
SAMUEL BOYD.
