Description

' G. N. HEIN EPODBRIIC SYRIHGB 'ITB AMPULI RECEIVING PISTOII Filed Jax). v 19, 1925 kvk 'l 3 Patented Gct. 20, 1925.
vinflar-'risa STATES GEORGE n. HEIN, orsAN'rnANcI-soo, CALIFORNIA.
HYPODERMIC SYRIN-E WITH AMPUIIERECEIVING P-SKTON.
Application filed January To all whom t may concer/n.'
Be it known that I, Gnonen N. IIEIN, a citizen ot the United States, residing at the city and 'county of San Francisco, and State ot California, have inventedv certain new andv useful Improvements lin Hypodermic Syringes with Ampule-Receiving Pistons, of which the following is a specilication. l
The present invention relates to improvements in hypoderinic syringe constructions andn more particularlyto a toi-m of device wherein a phial containingthe medicament to be injected is adapted 'for reception witlr in the piston of the syringe barrel and to be transferred into the syringe barrel on successive operations of the piston.
The invention has among its objects to provide a structure wherein the medicament is not exposed to the atmosphere during its transfer from the phial to the syringe barrel, and is in this manner protected trom contamination, and to provide a type ot structure which is adapted for use in connection with syringe barrels as universally constructed, with but the substitution of a ditlerent form ot piston adapted for receiving the medicament containing phial.
With the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination oi parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanyingl drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope ot the claims may be resorted to without departing t'rom the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings disclosing the preferred embodiment ot my invention-- Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional View ot the assembled structure.
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the medicament containing phial.
In the drawings, wherein like characters ot reference designate corresponding'parts, 1 indicates a tubular syringe barrel, open at its upper end as at 2, and from the opposite end of which extends a tapering tip 3 provided with a discharge bore 4.
Detachably titted over the end of the tip 3 is a needle base 5 from which extends a conventional form of hypodermic needle 6. An elastic member 7 having a flexible check r9, 1925. serial no. 3,217.
vReciprocably mounted within the barrel 31, y
throughits open end, is a-'tubular piston 9, open at its outer end, as at 10, and closed at its inner end,'by the plug 11 threaded the-reinto, the latter mounting an elastic hood 12,
the periphery ot which Vtrictionally engages the innerywall otthe barrel and formera packing for the piston. The plug 11 .is cen trally bored, as at 13, and from the same extends inwardly into the piston 9 a needle 14. The hood 12 is slit inwardly as at 15 to provide a check valve flap 16, which precludes the passage of fluid inwardly through the bore 13 in theplug 12, and admits of the passage ot' fluid outwardly therethrough.
An hermetically sealed phial 17, the open end 18 of which is closed by a cork or other puncturable sealing member 19, is inserted endwise, as in the drawing, into the piston, through its open end 10, and longitudinal pressure is applied thereto, forcing the needle 14 to penetrate the closure 19 and extend into medica-ment 20. within the phial 17.
In the above description the operator assembles the parts, as in the drawing, vand when using the device the operator grasps the end of the piston 20 and pulls the same outwardly. This action closes the check valve 8 and causes an unseating of the flap 16, and the created vacuum Ain the barrel 1, below the plug 11, withdraws the medicayment trom the phial 17 through the needle 14and bore 13 into the barrel.
When the desired quantity ot medicament has been admitted into the barrel, inward pressure is applied to the piston, whichl causes a .closing of the flap 16 and the opening of the check valve 8, resulting in the discharge of the medicament through the needle 6.
It will be apparent that any desired quantity of medicament may be withdrawn from the phial 17 without exposing the remainder thereof to the atmosphere, and if the proper closure is used in connection with the phial, the puncture therein may be automatically sealed on the withdrawal of the phial from the needle.
I claim t* v 1. A hypodermic syringe including a barrel open at one end and provided with a hypodermio needle extending from its other end,`a chambered piston reciprocably mounted therein and provided with a bore'communicating with the interior of the barrel. a tubular needle extending inwardly into the chamber of the piston and connecting with .the bore, and a phial for reception within the piston Chamber and provided with a puneturable closure for penetration by said needle. Y 'l 2. A hypodermio syringe including a barrel open at one end and provided with a hypodermie needle extending from its other end, an outwardly open valve controlling` the discharge of fluid from the barrel .through the needle, a chambered piston reciprocably mounted within the barrel and provided with albore communicating with the interior of the barrel, a tubular needle ex.-
.tending inwardly intovthe piston and conneeting with the bore, an outwardly opening eheck valve controlling the passage of fluid through the piston bore into the barrel, and r al phial for being removably positioned within the piston and provided with a puncturable Closure for penetration by said needle.
3. A piston for hypodermic syringes 'including, a tubular body open at one end, a member for closing the other end, Said member provided with an outlet channel and a flanged extension, a piston packing mounted on the flanged extension and eut inwardly to provide a check valve for oontrolling the fluid flow in one direction through said outlet channel, and a tubulary needle carried by the closure member and extending inwardly into `the tubular body with one end communicating with said Out.- let channel. p
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this Specification.
