UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

EMBOSSINGsPRESS TYPE AND STRIP HOLDER.
Application filed April 11, 1925.
provide a type holding device in connection with a sliding base which will be anton atically brought into position to be operated upon by the press.
A further object ot the invention is to provide a work holding device which is adapted to hold different sizes ot strips upon which the embossing' is performed.
lteterring to the drawing wherein I have shown a preferred embodiment ot my invention;
Figure 1 is a side view in elevation oit the embossing press and type and Work holding "devices, the press bead being shown in section.
Figure 2 is a top plan view ot the press and associated parts, as seen in Fig. 1.
Figure 3 a section taken on the line tif-3 ot Figure 1 showing the press parts in elevation and work holder and type holder .in section.r
Figari-e L1 an enlarged partial top plan viewnot the press lied and work carrying table, the type carrier being removed.
Figure 5 is a side view in section through the press. the work table being positioned beneath the `pressing element.
lligure (i is a section taken on the line (-G ot' Figure 2, and
Figure T is a perspective view oli a piece ot en'ibossing type.
Ile'lerring to the drawing in detail 5 indicates tie head housing and (i the bed ot an embossing press, the head 5 being` constructed to accommodate in its upper end n cross shalt 7 the outer end ot' which be- V'vond the head 5 is provided with an oper- Serial No. 22,254.
and carrying rods ll which pass through suitable guide bores l2 in the housing 5 and are secured at their lower ends to the presser head or plunger 13, which operates within the sides ot the housing. The housing 5 may be cast integrally with the bed 6 or it may be bolted thereto.
The bed 6 is provided with grooves 11 in which lit the projections depending troni the underside ot the work carrier table 15 to guide the work table in its sliding movement on the press bed from and towards the operating head of the press.
The sides otl the press bed 6 are provided with plates 1T having cam faces 18 over which slide the cam blocks 19. The cam faces 18 o t` the plates slope 4downwardly towards the head ot' the press, so that when the blocks 19 are moved toward the press they will ride down the plate 'faces 18 and consequently lower the type carrier 2O which entends across the Work table and .is releasably attached at its ends to the tops oit the cam blocks 19 through the medium of dowel pins 2l carried on the upper edge oit said blocks `which pass through suitable openings in the type carrier.
The upper ends of the cam blocks 19a/reprovided With flanges 22 which limit their downward movement by coming to rest on the upper edges of the guide brackets 2S which are secured to the sides of' the ivorl: table 16 by suitable screws. Then the flanges 22 are so positioned the type .is in contact with the strip to be embossed.
The type carrier 2O comprises two bars 25 and 26, the bar 25 having a channel 27 cut .therein the bottom of which is rounded as at 28, to t into amatching groove or cut out 29 in each piece oi' type 30. The
channel is wide enough to accomodate a piece of type so that when the bar 2G is locked in position against bar 25 the type Will be securely locked in the channel 27. Any particular line of type may be held in the type bar. In order to release the type I provide 'for moving the bar 26 away trom bar 25 by mounting the bar 25 on ltwo headed pins 31 which are secured in each end ot bar 25 vand are sufficiently long to allow of movement of bar 26 away from bar 25. In order to lock the bars together securely, I provide hook members 32 pivoted to the ends ot bar 25 and adapted when swung to have their hooked ends engage over lthe ends of bar 26.
Thus. it will be seen that as the work table 16 is moved along the press bed 6, the type carrier is gradually lowered until the type rest upon the material to be embossed beneath the press head 13, at which time the handle 8 is drawn forward, and the head 13 bears down on the type with sutlicient pressure to cause embossing by the type dies or type. This lowering movement, as has been stated is caused by the riding of the cam blocks 19 down the cam faces 13 of the plates 17. TWhen the work table is in the position shown in Figure 2 the type carrier and type are in spaced relation with the work table and the work can readily be removed.
In this particular machine the work comprises the embossing ot strips or heavy composition, the embossing consisting or cutting paper letters out of a sheet and embossing them onto a strip in a single operation, the details of which are not set forth in this application, sufficient to say that some means must be provided for positioning strips of different lengths on the work table 16 beneath the type dies 30 and I provide retaining plates or work holders 33 adapted to be set on the table 16 over dowel pins 34, the plates being held in proper position through the medium o'l" screws 35 which pass through slots 36 in the plates and engage the table.
The plates 33 are provided with cut-outs 37 into which the opposite ends or' the strip 38 fit and are held to be embossed by the or type 30.
Any particular size of cut out 37 may be provided in the plates 33 to accommodate strips 38 of various widths, and the positioning of the plates various distances apart allow for different lengths of strips.
It will be evident, therefore that I have provided a press for embossing strips of material which is simple in operation, has few parts and one which will perform the work on various sizes ot strips with but ew changes in the strip holding part ot' the press.
Having described my invention what I claim is:
1. In an embossing press, a pressing head, an embossing type carrier, a work carrying` table movable toward and away from said head, and means for raising and lowering the type carrier automatically during movement of said table.
2. In an embossing press, a pressure exerting head, a work holder, an embossing ing the type carrier ot`f of the work holder during a retractile movement of said holder.
il. In an embossing' machine a pressure exerting head, a movable work carrier, a type carrier slidably associated with the work carrier, a press bed, cam members associated therewith, and means on said type carrier engaging the cam members whereby a horizontal movement ot the work carrier will result in a vertical movement of the type carrier.
5. An embossing press comprising a pressv bed, a. pressure exerting head, a work carrier movable to a position beneath said head, means on said carrier for retaining a strip of material in position to be operated upon by said head, a type carrier movably associated with said work carrier and so arranged that the type in the carrier is'positioned o-ver said strip, and means on the press bed tor causing contact of the type in the carrier with said strip when the carrier is moved to a position beneath said head.
(i. An embossing press comprising a base, a work carrier slidable on said base, plates on said carrier having slots therein in which are held al strip of material to be embossed, an embossing type holder carried by said work carrierand vertically slidable relatively thereto, whereby the type may be raised and lowered relatively to the strip and means for limiting the downward movement of said type carrier.
7. An embossing press comprising a pressing head, a base, a work carrier slidable on said base, means for retaining the material to be operated upon in position on said carrier, cam members on the base, an embossing type holder carried by said work carrier, having depending portions which engage said cams so that when the work carrier is moved towards the pressing head the type holder will be lowered to bring the type into Contact with the strip at a point beneath said pressing head.
