3 Claims.
This invention relates to a copyholder for photo-copy machines, and has for its object to afford a structure that enables clamping a maximum number of sheets or forms on to a common support in partially masked and endwise overlapping relationship so that. portions of all of them may be copied in one operation.
More particularly, the invention is intended to afford a construction that may either be built as 10, a part of a photo-copy machine, or may constitute a separate portable adjunct adapted to be located on the copy table of the machine, and which enables clamping a multiplicity of forms thereon in such a Way that while a portion of each form is masked from view, they are all held tightly on the board or support so that the latter can be loaded and conveniently carried from one point to another.
A further purpose of the invention is to afford 20, a simple and practical construction that can be economically manufactured, and embodies an arrangement permitting an operator to position a large number of forms quickly and accurately on the holder with a clamping mechanism that simultaneously holds or releases all the forms in one row or line.
Another purpose of the invention is to provide simple and easily controlled operating mechanism for moving the clamping members to 3,0 and from clamping position, and for properly locating the forms. 7
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts that will appear clearly from the following description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, the novel features being pointed out in the claims following the specification.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a copyholder constructed in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention, showing several forms clamped thereon, and with one of the clamping members in releasing position;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig, 1;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 2 with the clamping member in elevated or releasing position;
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view partially broken away on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1, showing the clamping member lowered, and
Fig. 6 is a similar view showing the clamping member elevated.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which like reference numerals refer to the same parts throughout the several views, the invention, according to the illustrated embodiment which shows one practical adaptation, includes a board or support I which may be of wood or suitable light metal and is provided with a series of parallel longitudinally extending spaced recesses or depressions 2 that receive the edge portion of a form and the superposed clamping and masking member.
Each clamping member preferably comprises a long, thin plate 3 of metal, which is of a size and thickness to fit in the recess or depression 2, and lies flush with the top surface of the board I when in clamping position. Each clamping member 3 is movably attached to the board to permit it to be actuated to and from clamping position, and for this purpose, is preferably supported by a series of hinges 4 secured to the board and to the clamping member respectively, while 5 designate a series of leaf springs each having one end fixedly attached to the board and its opposite free end overlying the clamping member 3 and acting to retain the latter in clamping relation with the forms or sheets to be held.
The clamping members 3 may be operated to and from clamping position by any suitable mechanism for the purpose, and in the construction shown, there is employed for each clamping plate 3, a longitudinal slidable actuating member or bar 6 that is arranged in a suitable guide or housing secured to the underside of the board or support I and provided at its outer end with an operating handle 8. The actuating member or bar 6 has a series of cam surfaces 9 engageable with pins l0 which are vertically arranged thereover and movable in openings provided in the board I.
The upper ends of the pins Ill underlie and are in contact with the bottom surfaces of the clamping plates 3, preferably at points in vertical alinement with the free ends of the springs 5. When the operating handle 8 is engaged to draw the rod 6 outwardly, the cam surfaces 9 elevate the pins l0 and thereby raise the clamping plate 3 against the action of the springs 5. Outward movement of the actuating bar 6 is limited by a stop H, and with the clamping plate in this raised or elevated position, the several forms are positioned with the edges which are to be masked and clamped under said plate 3 and in the desired overlapping relationship.
an additional series of pins 12 are provided, fixed. to the board and extending through openings IS in the clamping plate.
It will be understood that with this construction, the clamping plate 3, in addition to-clampe ing a form, masks a portion of it along the edge which it is not desired to copy, and a multiplicity of these forms, such as automobile licenses, can be secured to the board in overlapping relationship with only a small portion exposed to view for copying. After one row. of
forms has been located and secured by. a clamping.
plate, the next adjacent series of forms can be located with a portion thereof'positioned over the. aforementioned clamping plate, and With their free edges immediately adjacent to the exposededge of the first series of forms, while their opposite edges will be masked and clamped by the,
next clamping plate, In this fashion, a maximum 'number of forms can be arranged'and held on the board, and a copy of portions of all of them made at one operation,
While the invention has been described with.
reference to a particular, embodiment, it is not confined to the details or arrangements shown,v
and this application is intended to coverany'd'eipartures or modifications coming within thepurposes of the improvement or. the scope. of. the following claims.
