Our invention relates to the manual sorting of cards so as to bring them into numerical sequence orto select a certain number of cards of a particular classification. Sorting of this kind is described in Patent No. 1,544,172 dated June 30, 1925 issued to Alfred Per This application is a continuation in part of application Serial Number 321,826 filed March 2, 1940.

In this patent the cards are punched with a plurality of perforations adjacent their edge. The cards are then classified by notching or slotting the cards by cutting away the material between a perforation and the edge of the card, thus forming a pattern of notches relating to a single classification.

Our invention has for its principal object to provide a card support or holder which will have walls against which the cards may be' stacked to even their edges and then hold them in correct alinement.

A further object is to provide a card support or holder with a master plate or template one or more edges of which are notched or slotted to register with the perforations adjacent the edge or edges of the cards.

The sides 36 of the card support are each formed with an overhanging shoulder 38,`which allow the bottom plate 24 to t flush when in the up position. When the bottom plate 24 is in place beneath the cards, it will be in the up position shown in Fig-8 in full lines. Further movement will cause/che ridges 32 of the corrugated metal piece 30 to drop into grooves 4 formed in a corresponding piece of metal 42, fastened to the bottom of the card support.

This form of our invention is used as follows: When the stack of cards is placed in the support, with the sliding bottom 24, in the up position where it is resting on the two plates 30 and 42, by pushing the bottom 24 in, it will drop when the ridges 32 register with the grooves 40, and the drop will cause the selected cards to fall. It may also be used with a card having certain aligned perforations connected by slots. In such a case, the cards will drop just the length of the two-hole slot and a sorting needle can be inserted to remove from the top, such cards as have not fallen.

When the operator is ready to begin the sorting operation a master plate Il, which spond in size to the cards which are to be sorted, is inserted in the space l0, with one of the notched edges l2, or I3 uppermost according to which the edges of the cards are to be used in sorting, the slot I6 or l1 according to the arrangement o! the cards being at the left.
