- IMPROVEMENT IN NEEDLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,729, dated October 6, I874; application filed September 29, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY M. JENKINs, of New York, in the county of New York I and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needles; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

My invention relates to that class of needles which are provided with slots or openings for the passage of the thread into the eye and the nature of my invention consists in the peculiar formation of such slot for the purpose of facilitating the introduction of the thread into the eye, and also to more effectually prevent'its withdrawal in sewing, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawi 1g, which represents a side elevation of a needle embodying my invention.

A represents a needle of ordinary shape, provided at or near the head end with an eye, a. This end of the needle is split, so as to form an opening or passage into the eye a, said split being made on two curves, at and y, as shown, and the last curve entering the eye at the side of the upper end, so as to leave a solid bearing, 1), at the end of the eye for the thread.

The split end of the needle is held closed by the natural spring of the metal, and opens to the pressure of the thread from the outside, said thread being forced in between the two rounded ends 43 11 of said split end.

This construction of the head of the needle does not weaken. the needle, as it is in the thickest part thereof that the opening is made; and the thread cannot slip through said opening, as it has a solid hearing or seat, b, to rest against at the end of the eye.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In abifurcated needle, the combination, with the eye a, of ordinary construction, of the en terin g cleft or slit :0 y, S-shaped,or in the form of a compound curve, the recessed seat I), to form a solid bearing for the thread, and the rounded guide ends M, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
