Be it known that we, line/run S. Kinnnon'rz and Ennn s'r Dinner, citizens of the- United States of America, residing at Day ton, county of Montgomery, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful lmprovementsin Engines, of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to engines and particularly to engines of the type using poppet valves.
Amongthe objects of the present invention are reduction of noise, protection of the valveoperating mechanism from dust and dirt, lubrication of the mechanism in a Sim-- ple manner, and reduction of the transfer of heat from the hotter parts of the engine to the valve mechanism.
Uther and further objects of the present invention will be apparent from following description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings wherein a preferred embodiment of one form of the present invention is clearly shown. In the drawings: Fig. 1 is asectional view of an engine taken on line 11 of Fig. 2, showing the improved valv actuating mechanism; and
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2- -2 of Fig. 1. Referring to the drawings, 20 is the cylinder of an internal-combustion engine connected with an intake pipe 21 and an exhaust pipe 22 leading to separatepassages. The passage leading from the intake pipe 21 to the cylinder 20' is shownat 23 and is controlled by a valve24 having a stem 25. The upper part of the cylinder is provided with hole 26 leading from the passage 23 within which is press-fitted a valve guide 27 which extends beyond the top of the cylinder. This extendin portion ofthe guide 27 functions as a gui e for'the valve spring 28 which is interposed between the top of the cylinder and a valve spring thrust seat 29. v
The top of cylinder 20 carries 'a'valve mechanism housing 30. Housing 30 is spaced from the cylinder by a gasket 31 for a purpose to be described, and is se cured in place by bolts-'32. The housmg 30 includes side walls 34 and 35, a front wall 36, a back wall 37, and a bottom wall 38. The side walls 3% and 35 are provided.
with aligned holes for receiving a rocker tit) arm pin 39. Pin 39 is .hollowand the ends thereof are closed by plugs 41; so that the pin forms a reservoir for lubricant. The wall 34 1S tapped to receive a hollow pin 43 having a reduced end 44 received by a suitable hole in pin 39 to lock said pin in position. Valve actuating rocker arms 46 and 47 are rotatablyand slidably mounted onthe pin 39 and are separated from one another and held against the walls 34: and 35 respectively by -a spring l8 which encircles the pm 39 and is interposed between the arms. The pin 39 is provided with tapped holes in the bottom thereof which receive felt plugs 49 through which the lubricant seeps and thence passes to the outer periphery of the pin 39 to supply a limited amount of lubrication to the rocker arms 46 and d7 justable screw 54 which is carried-by the.

The top edge of the'side walls 34 and 35 slopes downwardly from'the back wall 37 to the front wall 36 which extends to substantially the same elevation as the up- 28 will cause the per end of the valve ste'm 25 when in uppermost position. A cover 55 isprovided for the housing 30 and is held in place by screws one of which is shown at 56. The cover 55 is formed to conform" to the shape of the up-.

The invention is herein applied to an in-.
ternal-combustion engine of the .air-cooled type similar to the engine shown in the copendin application of Keilholtz and Dickey Serial ilo. 390,247, filed June 19, 1920. The engine is provided with a draft tube 58 which encircles the cylinder 20 and the valve actuating mechanism. The tube 58 is provided with an opening 59 in ,the top thereof for the passageof air therethrough. This opening 59 is large enough to permit the withdrawal therethrough of the'housing as a unit or the cover 55.
Certain advantages are PParent in the present invention, one of which is the removability of the housing and rocker arms as a unit. By merely removing the bolts 32, the housing and rocker arms can be removed as a unit'without disturbing any of the adjustments. The rocker arm remains in position with respect to the housing and the push rod guide slides from the push rod' "portion 51.
Only one place is necessary for oiling the rocker arms; The pin 39 upon which the arms are fulcrumed forms-a reservoir in of the bolts 56 permits the withdrawal ofwhich an ample quantity of lubricant can be stored to provide lubrication for a long interval. Therefore frequent oiling is unnecessary. The rocker arms are not over lubricated. The felt plugs-49 distribute a limited amount of lubricant to the bearing surfaces of the rocker arm and pin. In
'this manner very little, if any, lubricant escapes from the housing into the path of air currents to collect the dirt circulating with the air.
One member serves as a lubricant conduit to the reservoir and as a locating pin for the rocker arm fulcrum pin. This improved mechanism provides a device inwhich the reservoir is easilysupplied with lubricant and in which the rocker arms are readily assembled or disassembled. After removing the pin 43, the fulcrum pin 39 can be withdrawn, permitting the rocker arms to be removed. The spring 48 provides means for maintaining both rocker arms in place upon the fulcrum when the mechanism is in'its assembled position.
Ready access may be had for the adjustment of the actuating mechanism. Removal the cover through the opening '59 in the draft tube 58. After the cover is removed the adjusting screw can be actuated; and, by forming the housing with sloping walls, a gauge can be readily inserted through the opening 59 in the tube 58 and between the rocker arm and valve stem for testing the clearance between said members.
The improved mechanism provides quiet engine operation, and the rocker arms and housing therefore are maintained relatively cool.- The gasket 31 limits the conduction of heatfrom the hot cylinder to the rocker is to be understood that other forms might be adopted and various changes and alterations made in the shape, size, and proportion of the elements therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the inven:

What is claimed is as follows: .1. In a device of the kind described, and
in combination with an internal combustion engine cylinder, a housing supported by said cylinder above the upper end thereof; a hollow pin the ends of which are supported in bearings carried by said housing; a
rocker arm located within said housing, and one end of which is adapted to engage and operate a valve of the engine; a push rod for operating said rocker arm; a removable cover for said housing, and which cover has a hole in its upper surface; and a hollow conduit the lower end ofwhich engages said pin to thereby hold it in place within its bearings, and the upper end of which conduit extends through the hole aforesaid in the cover of said housing.

In a device of the kind described, the combination with a valve; of a valve gear comprising a rocker arm, a pin for said arm adapted to movably carry said arm, a support for said pin and means for holding the pin on the support, said means also forming a conduit for the passage of lubricant to said pin. 1 I i 3. In a device 'of the kinddescribed, the combination with a valve; of a valve gear comprising a rocker. arm, a hollow pin adapted to form a lubricant reservoir and a fulcrum for said arm and having a passage leading to said arm, means for holding the pin on the support and which means also forms a conduit for the passage of lubricant to said pin, and means for restr1?ting the fiow of lubricant through sald passage.
