2 Claims. (Cl. 123-124) This invention relates to auxiliary air inlet deshaft 40f the clutch mechanism (not shown) to vices for increasing the efficiency of the combuseffect a direct clutch engagement between said tible mixture of air and hydrocarbon supplied to main drive shaft and said spline Shaft. Such internal combustion engines, particularly autointermeshed Pos tio of Said gears being desi motive engines equipped with change speed transhated the third or high speed position. The slid- 60 mission mechanisms. The invention has for its a g Speed gear 1 iS intermeshed With and principal object to provide for the control of the disengaged from th a n drive Shaft gear 3 y auxiliary air inlet device by the change speed th usual sh ftin k 5 t a p d from one transmission mechanism so that said device will d Of a p ate 6 u d o horizontal Sliding l0 operate t d it an additional a tity of air movement in the cover 7 for the transmission 65 to the carbureting system of the engine when gear case B. The slide plate 6 is actuated in the change speed transmission mechanism is oph u ual manner by m n f a ear shiftin crating in high speed. Other objects are to prolever 8, which is mounted for universal movevide a simple and inexpensive inlet valve mechament in the'dome 9 of the transmission case ni nd t bl said valve t be quickly d cover 7, to permit said lever to be shifted both 7 easily attached to the change s eed transmission l n i udinally and r nsv r y to engage h mechanism. The invention consists in the con- P p Slide p The Construction thus far struction, arrangements and combinations 1 described is well known and it is considered unparts hereinafter described and claimed. necessa y to ustrate it in d ta I the accompanying dr i hi h form Mounted on the cover of the transmission gear 75 part of this specification nd wherein like symcase B adjacent to the sidep late 6 that carries bols refer to like parts wherever they occur, the Shifting fork 5 for the high Speed Sliding Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the intake side 8 is an auxiliary a inlet valve E which of an internal combustion engine and its change communicates through a P p conduit 10 W t speed transmission mechanism provided t the intake manifold D. Said valve comprises a so auxiliary air inlet device embodying my invencasing Which is Preferably h in place On t tion, transmission case cover 7 by one of the securing Fig, 2 is fragmentary side ele ti partly bolts 12 therefor, which bolt engages a notch in in vertical section, of a portion 0! the change the Outer d of a Plate 13 that p j h rispeed t i i mechanism, showing t zontally from one side of said valve casing. The ner in which the air inlet device is controlled by Valve casing 11 is P v With a p w y said mechani one end of which communicates with the pipe 10 Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view of then-a leading to the intake manifold D. Entry of atmission case, showing the air inlet device mountmosphelic into the other end of the p 35 ed thereon, Way 14 in the valve casing 11 is controlled by 90 Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 44 in means Of a Valve member comprising a d s 15 Fig. 3; and with a beveled edge fitting in a correspondingly Fig. 5 is a vertical section on the line 5-5 in shaped at n said end f said passa eway. The
- Fig. 3. disk 15 is mounted on a stem 16 slidable in a Referring to the accompanying drawin my cross member 1'! that is removably secured to 95 invention is shown i connection th an 11.. the valve casing and forms the outer wall of a nary i t l combustion engine A provided t vertical opening 18 formed in said casing at the a standard change speed mechanism located in inlet End Of the passageway 14 h eon. The a, housing r casing 13 l t adjacent t th valve is normally held in closed position by means rear d of id i Th engine A is providof a coil spring 19 sleeved on the stem 16 be- 100 ed with th usual charge forming device or tween the crosshead 17 and the disk 15 on the buretor C and the usual intake manifold D leadend of Said Stem- Valve Stem 16 is p v d d ing from said carburetor to the engine cylinat its outer end w th a downwardly extending ders, arm 20, which has a lower end portion that The gear elements of the change speed transstraddles the outer end of a pin 21 and is rigidly 105 mission mechanism are not fully illustrated; but, secured thereto by means of a clamping screw 22. for the purpose of illustrating the invention, there The pin 21 is disposed parallel to and is movable is shown the high speed sliding gear 1 which is withthe valve stem 16 and extends through a slid forwardly along the spline shaft 2 into mesh horizontal opening 23 provided therefor in the with the main drive gear 3 on the main drive front wall of the transmission case cover 7 with '110 its inner end in position to be engaged by the shifting form 5 for the high speed gear 1 when the latter is in high speed position.
By the arrangement described, the auxiliary air inlet valve remains closed in neutral, low and second speed positions of the gear shifting lever, but is automatically opened towsupply an additional quantity of air to the engine'lwhen said lever is moved to high speed position by the pressure of the shifter fork plate on the rod'c'arried' by the valve stem.
Obviously the here'inbefore described arrange ment admits ofconsiderablemodification with out departing from the invention. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown and described.
What I claim is: 1. The combination with an internal combustion engine and its change speed mechanism in of a normally closed auxiliary air inlet valve mounted on said casing and communicating with said engine, and means whereby said valve is adapted to be opened by the movement of said shifting fork to high speed position, said means comprising a-rod carried by said valve and slid- .iably supported in said casing in abutting relation to said shifting fork.
ONESIME E. MICHAUD.
